ARCHIVED Worried About Calories, Refractory Sprue, And Basically Everything
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was on nexium for a very long time pre-diagnosis and it did not help. I had maybe less "heartburn" but more symptoms in the throat and mouth. Then they gave me carafate to coat my throat and it kept me from feeling like I was choking whenever I ate solid food but didn't help in any other way. I felt a lot better after I got off the nexium--originally. that... -
what is this food sensitivity test you speak of, and how/where did you get it done? all I've heard of is allergy testing which is different. and yes, people here have had trouble with rice. some people cannot eat any grains at all.

ARCHIVED Worried About Calories, Refractory Sprue, And Basically Everything
Strawberry-Jam posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hello all. You've heard from me before about my dietary woes, in that my symptoms have regressed to pre-Coeliac days even though I live in a completely gluten-free house, have essentially given up restaurants, and so on and so on. A few people have offered advice toward what diets I should try next. I have decided to do the failsafe diet because it is the... -
ARCHIVED Cleaning A Breadmaker?
Strawberry-Jam replied to BeFree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
then what's the point of the breadmaker?? I don't get it. seems like such a specialised tool that it's useless. and I haven't made bread since going gluten-free so I don't know anything about baking gluten free bread. ... -
ARCHIVED Cleaning A Breadmaker?
Strawberry-Jam replied to BeFree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Kneading bread dough is the most fun part of bread. What is the point of a breadmaker? I never understood them. Making bread from stratch in a bread pan is pretty easy and doesn't take too long, really, unless it has to rise. -
ARCHIVED Another Question,
Strawberry-Jam replied to TTNOGluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
yep. I feel this too, when glutened (I think). Except my muscle aches are in my biceps and calves primarily rather than my back. I also have random depression and crying spells with soy, and of course when you're in pain and so on you just want to cry and cry... -
ARCHIVED What Helps You Stay Positive?
Strawberry-Jam replied to ewalker's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Enzymes really help, I've noticed. I had been cutting back on my usage of them to save money and that is part of why, I think, my reflux worsened. It also helps a lot to maintain a perfectly straight spine for at least a few hours after eating (no reclining and NO SLOUCHING!!!!argh. I need to listen to myself) probiotics seemed to make me gassy last time... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With The Holidays--Help Please!
Strawberry-Jam replied to BeFree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, it's a good thing for a guest to do, cleaning the kitchen every once in a while. At least, that's what my mother taught me. I think I meant "before you start cooking" rather than "once you arrive" though... my brain does strange things sometimes... -
ARCHIVED What Helps You Stay Positive?
Strawberry-Jam replied to ewalker's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How do I stay positive? To be honest, I stay positive only with a heckuva lot of prayer. My health remains rather poor (for my age--I'm 22) even after over nine months gluten-free and soy-free and about a month of a backwards elimination diet (eliminating suspected foods one at a time until you're left with the failsafe diet or 5 food elimination diet... -
ARCHIVED No More Wine For Me.
Strawberry-Jam replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
strange! I didn't know this was a symptom. If I drink on an empty stomach I get fuzzy after just one drink, when usually it takes two or three, but I haven't noticed a major difference in my alcohol tolerance. I was diagnosed with celiac maybe eight months after turning 21 so I'd already been drinking a fair bit before I went gluten free. I have had... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With The Holidays--Help Please!
Strawberry-Jam replied to BeFree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, it's not too hard to avoid CC, depending on how sensitive you are. I would clean the kitchen once you arrive and keep tabs on all gluten crumbs, making sure you wash your hands very often and always before eating, etc. Avoid scratched nonstick pans, wooden utensils, cutting boards, and colanders--basically, every type of thing you had to replace before... -
ARCHIVED End Of My Rope
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, the muesli didn't have oats. Just rice and millet and nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. Also, the sunflower oil replaced the olive oil because I was supposed to avoid salicylates, and I can't have ghee because of casein. Why would sunflower oil be a problem? It is on the failsafe diet...? It is Tesco brand and it has no preservatives or other ingredients... -
ARCHIVED End Of My Rope
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I take nature's bounty iron and vitamin D, which try really hard to be hypo-allergenic as possible. I also was taking a multi with cornstarch in it that I switched out for...Sona multiplus? which is labelled gluten corn soy etc. free. I also talked at length with the lady at the store about the new enzymes I bought and they're ok too. I don't take any other... -
Okay, so it's official. My acid reflux has returned to the exact same levels that it was before I was diagnosed with celiac and went gluten free. Back then I had stopped eating for a very long time, gave up all solid foods, and lost a lot of weight because of the severity of my reflux and other stomach problems. I constantly felt the desire to puke. I had...

ARCHIVED Salicylate Sensitivity--Help?
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
new symptoms? when I took off my shirt today I found I had bled under the skin where my bra strap was. only on one arm, but it was a little alarming. I have the urgency to pass water thing sometimes. I don't have all the symptoms but a cherrypicked list. Anyone else have advice or experiences to share? -
ARCHIVED Semi-Elimination Diet
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We are in the same boat! I've been gluten free over six months, myself. Going on nine or ten. The best way to handle giving up foods, probably, is to disassociate with all foods for the time being--form no attachments to anything, whether it be candy or fruit or a particular spice. Treat food like a machine would treat oil: it is necessary, and you will... -
ARCHIVED Salicylate Sensitivity--Help?
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My reactions are primarily neurological: fatigue, headaches (esp. in the face & eyes), weird vision, insomnia, depression/crying spells. On top of that I have muscle aches in my biceps & calves, intermittent neck/shoulder pain, and gastro symptoms like gas (burping a lot, but some intestinal gas as well), soft stools, nausea, and very intense and... -
Okay, so. I am suspecting a salicylate sensitivity because it is the one thing I have not cut out thru elimination diet testing (I had tea every morning, olive oil with every meal) thus far. Also, I had a severe reaction to some tahini, I think, and unless it is specifically a sesame intolerance I can't think of what the other problem could be. I want...

ARCHIVED Semi-Elimination Diet
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
okay! I think they will be fine, but I will wait until my system has settled down a little before I try them. Got some in my freezer right now. I love eating a bowl of Brussels sprouts cooked in bacon grease with a few slices of bacon... I'm not eating processed meats atm but I can't wait until I can try bacon again Right now I'm having rooibos tea... -
ARCHIVED Ugh! Is Anything Safe?
Strawberry-Jam replied to cait's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, seriously, that's why rice is awesome. It adds texture and volume whilst absorbing the flavour of whatever it is mixed in with. It also adds cheap calories that are not totally empty, like most cheap calories are. I'm a poor post-college student. I need things like this, which is what wheat pasta used to be for me. -
ARCHIVED Ugh! Is Anything Safe?
Strawberry-Jam replied to cait's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm in the same boat as you. A month of intense semi-elimination diet: nothing. After reacting severely to some tahini, I am now going to explore salicylate sensitivity. -
ARCHIVED Is The Barbecue Safe?
Strawberry-Jam replied to DanPatch's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Cover a portion of the grill with aluminium foil and cook your food on that. Poke a few holes in places that won't let your food contact the grill. When I lived with my parents over the summer, they always cleaned & covered a portion of the grill away from other shelves that would drip on it etc. I was more worried about soy CC than gluten CC, since they... -
ARCHIVED Semi-Elimination Diet
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry for being a bit slow, Skylark. I had just been researching the low-sal diet a lot. I think I will have to test for that first because it is more likely--I just had tahini & rice cakes for dinner last night and had a whole bunch of symptoms that started up immediately and lasted through the night (I had to take sleeping medicine in order to fall... -
ARCHIVED Semi-Elimination Diet
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a choice at this juncture. Do I test for salicylate sensitivity or fructose malabsorption? I don't see how I could test for both without eating only like three things. ah, whatever. I just bought a multivitamin that doesn't have corn etc and is suitable for an elimination diet, so here goes nothing... I think I will eat rice and meat for the... -
ARCHIVED Semi-Elimination Diet
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
shoot. I switched from something else to rice dream because it was only rice, sunflower oil, and salt, and the other one had sweeteners and chemical things I didn't recognize and so on. rice dream is the one with barley in the processing, right? But it TESTS gluten-free so if I were reacting to that it would mean I was super-sensitive, would it? I...
