ARCHIVED New To Gluten Free - Questions
Strawberry-Jam replied to Rick-O-Shay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The acute reflux started in about September of my senior year, after one of the most stress-free summers and school-year beginnings ever, which was very strange. It worsened over time until by late November I was on a liquid diet--ensure, which contains soya and dairy and was probably making things worse, eggnog, which is also dairy-laden, and hot chocolate... -
ARCHIVED New To Gluten Free - Questions
Strawberry-Jam replied to Rick-O-Shay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
everyone's symptoms are different. mine, before diagnosis, were primarily untreatable acid reflux (feeling of a solid lump in my throat like choking, difficulty swallowing, irritation at back of tongue, pressure in the chest, heartburn), feeling full after two bites of food, never feeling hungry, stomach emptying slowly, irregular and random BMs (back... -
ARCHIVED Low Stomach Acid
Strawberry-Jam replied to Chad Sines's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
the "burning" I associated with the HCl? haven't taken HCl for 36 hours. just popped some fruitin, which is a stomach acid barrier for reflux that doesn't change the ph of the stomach. it contains peppermint. that "burning" feeling is the same with the peppermint. I should keep experimenting with the HCl then. idkidk. I was gonna get some enzymes... -
ARCHIVED Bloating And Nonstop Burping -- Help
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just want to update this post with a few things for potential future readers. I was able to significantly reduce my burping gas--not eliminate, but reduce--by drinking more water in-between meals and less water/tea/liquids during meals. the stomach needs water to digest, but taking too much during meals will dilute the stomach acid needed to digest.... -
ARCHIVED Cider From The Tap...
Strawberry-Jam replied to lucky97's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Here in Dublin the cider on tap is Bulmers. I LOVE it but had to give up alcohol because of acid reflux. it did come in cans, tho, iirc. and there was a speciality pear cider that came in a bottle. maybe you can see if there are bottled ones? or yeah, just a different kind of glass. -
I can't handle even traces of soya. I have neuro symptoms, the worst of which is a crushing depression, emotional confusion, temptation to self-harm. Then headaches, pain, reflux. Last time I got symptoms from eating a single piece of shrimp cooked in a jambalaya with soya-containing sausages. Before that I got symptoms from washing my face with a shower...

ARCHIVED Beyond Frustrated With Family
Strawberry-Jam replied to Duhlina's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
my grandmother is the same way. she's suffered from chronic pain and fibromyalgia for decades, and has recently had lots of constipation/digestive issues that land her in the hospital with obstructions at least once or twice a year. She takes loads and loads of medications which only take the edge off, and has to give up doing things she wants to do and visiting... -
ARCHIVED Does Dairy Do Damage?
Strawberry-Jam replied to luvs2eat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I tho't that lactose intolerance does not cause permanent damage, whereas a casein intolerance can act just like coeliac. If it is your autoimmune system that is producing antibodies and attacking casein in the same way it does for gluten, then I can totally see how that would be the case. I don't have anything to back this up, only that I've heard this... -
ARCHIVED Low Stomach Acid
Strawberry-Jam replied to Chad Sines's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
sorry, I mean by itself as in not coupled with enzymes. I always take it after the first few bites / first half of a meal, tho. -

ARCHIVED Low Stomach Acid
Strawberry-Jam replied to Chad Sines's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know that peppermint is not good for reflux, but apparently EVERY SINGLE enzyme pill and EVERY SINGLE ANTACID has peppermint in it, here. the only antacid that doesn't have peppermint--rennie has fruit flavours as well as peppermint flavours--doesn't work TT_TT I guess... baking soda? -
ARCHIVED Low Stomach Acid
Strawberry-Jam replied to Chad Sines's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can take betain HCl with the enzymes without feeling any burning at all -- 600 mg with large meals, 300 mg (cut in half) with smaller ones/snacks. But every time I've tried to take a betaine HCl tablet by itself, my stomach has a burning sensation in it. kind of like how your mouth feels when you eat peppermints. I wonder if this means I need enzymes... -

ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
how did you treat your hiatal hernia? my problem is that ppis--nexium, protonix, prevacid, pantup relief, etc--do not work, and in fact seem to make it worse. -
ARCHIVED Low Stomach Acid
Strawberry-Jam replied to Chad Sines's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm finding it hard to get the right dose of HCl, because sometimes I will feel a "burning" and sometimes I won't. and then once I felt a burning in my stomach that I tho't was HCl before, but I hadn't taken any HCl for hours. however, after starting the HCl and enzymes, my D stopped in a single day. It was amazing. which is why I think this is the problem... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Is Ruining My Life !
Strawberry-Jam replied to eborzecki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I totally feel ya. Coeliac made me sick and miserable for my whole senior year of college; it was a battle of my mind and will versus my body. I did have a good year overall but I had to seriously tone down everything I did and limit my social life and forcefeed myself lest I starve. And even now, 9 months gluten free, I'm still having symptoms and problems... -
Is Turkey From A Stuffed Bird Safe?
Strawberry-Jam replied to RWWolfe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just want to check back in and add that it is very sweet and good of you to actually care and actually check up on this rather than making assumptions. It makes me sad when my aunt offers me a piece of delicious-looking pie with the crust cut off, which I know would not be safe at all, but she doesn't get it. so, on behalf of celiacs everywhere--thanks -
ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
so, after about six days of no fructose, I didn't notice any difference in symptoms. It wasn't until I started taking digestive enzymes with betaine HCl that my D stopped and became normal BMs again. I've been able to eat fats and seem to actually be digesting them now. I had a salad with pears in it last night, and this morning a fruit salad with grapes... -
Is Turkey From A Stuffed Bird Safe?
Strawberry-Jam replied to RWWolfe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
just gonna echo what everyone else is saying: absolutely NOT. you'll CC the entire bird, no matter how hard you try. make the stuffing separately and add it to the turkey on your plates, in a separate place from where your celiac family serves their food. -
ARCHIVED Bloating And Nonstop Burping -- Help
Strawberry-Jam replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
so the diagnosis is basically, "don't eat so fast"? why would it be happening now, tho, and not a month ago? -
ARCHIVED Depression After A Glutening
Strawberry-Jam replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
that is totally my soya symptom. I would imagine it would be the same for gluten as well. -
ARCHIVED Bloating And Nonstop Burping -- Help
Strawberry-Jam posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
y'all may have seen my desperate acid reflux threads... well, here's a symptom that's been getting worse for me. It's that immediately after eating, I will bloat up and start burping nonstop. At work I have to take a 15-20 minute bathroom break halfway in just to burp nonstop until it's time to go back to work, otherwise my stomach will be soooo uncomfortable... -
ARCHIVED Anyone gluten-free, Salicylate-Free And Nickel-Free?
Strawberry-Jam replied to Deacon's Garden's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think it is possible to be salicylate FREE, but being low sal should be good enough. Everyone has a salicylate threshold. yours is probably just low. The following foods are on the "failsafe" diet and are sal-free or low-sal. I know nothing about nickel. - unprocessed meats & seafood - eggs - most grains - white potatoes (peeled) - bamboo... -
ARCHIVED Caffeine & Autoimmune
Strawberry-Jam replied to WhenDee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've never really been able to tolerate caffeine, so I've mostly been caffeine-free by default most of my life. I can handle about one cup of coffee without overt symptoms. At the second cup, my stomach turns, I get jittery and shaky if my stomach is empty, and I get very lethargic and sleepy but unable to truly fall asleep. As a child a drop of caffeine...
