  1. The enzymes can help relieve the discomfort a bit I have found- I use Gluten Relief and noticed a difference. Apple cider vinegar actually works better and faster though-like within seconds! It is important that you understand aything that relieves symptoms does not mke it ok to indulge in gluten! Damage will still be done, you just might not have diarrhea...
  2. You didn't give it a chance. It can take MONTHS for bowel issues to resolve, and in the beginning, there can be a lot of back and forth...fine one day, sick the next. No rhyme or reason to it. From what you wrote it seems very obvious you have a problem with gluten. A few steps you should take first. #1 call your dr and get a copy of your labs that...
  3. Sorry, post got cut off. I notice you mentioned you were allergic to milk, but then said you were eating lactose free. Lactose free is not the same as being "milk free" Lactose is milk-sugar. Lactase is the enzyme your body needs to digest it. Celiac can cause lactose intolerance, where the villi can not produce the enzyme lacTASE break down the...
  4. I am so sorry to hear of your troubles. I think a new dr is in order, one who DOES understand celiac. Very likely your digestive bacteria can be out of balance when you first cut out gluten, dairy or other inflammatory foods. I was given some good advice here recently to try the paleo/primal diet to sort out my own digestive issues, and it has made...
  5. Agree with all of the above, and glad to hear you are committed to the diet now. It is unfortunate your doctor did not not make sure you and your mother were more informed of the long term consequences of eating gluten. Definitely go to the doctor now and request a FULL thryoid check which should include TSH, TPO, Free T3 and T4 and total T3 and T4. Celiac...
  6. You said you are feeling worse on the gluten-free diet and are wondering if you are on the wrong path. You aren't. Feeling worse off gluten is very common. In many people gluten has an opiate effect and will cause miserable withdrawal symptoms. It also takes some time for the body to right itself when the onslaught of gluten it is used to is taken away...
  7. The important reason to avoid cc, is because you want to "turn off" the immune response that is celiac. An active autoimmune response means your body thinks it is under seige, all the time. Now, a teeny bit of gluten may or may not make you sick, but it WILL put the immune system on high alert again. Continual exposure to teeny bits of gluten means you...
  8. Your symptoms are classic signs of inflammation. Inflammation is caused/worsened by what you eat. This was news to me! Being dx with celiac completely changed the way I viewed food. I spent many years with chronic fatigue, anemia, unexplained weight gain that no amount of diet or exercise would budge. Every part of my body hurt. My face was covered in...
  9. Yes, he was cute. But he was also about 22 and I am chasing 40 and happily married so... But it made my day to not only be able to eat prepared food, but to have someone go the extra mile to make it safe for me, without even asking! The Hy Vee here has a pretty decent gluten-free section, and the celiac support group is headed by the Hy Vee dietician...
  10. At Hy Vee today, Shane the Grillmaster was making the most wonderful smelling sandwiches outside. I decided to see if maybe, maybe I could eat it. So I asked to see the bottle of seasoning, and was so bummed to see it listed wheat and barley. So I said never mind. And then he said he could make me a ribeye with a different seasoning that was gluten free....
  11. I think we ALL can relate to your situation- welcome to the club. find otu the specific names of the tests that were run- most doctors do not do a complete celiac panel. Get a copy of the labs, and post your results on here, we will point you in the next direction. Time to stop waiting for drs to figure out what is wrong and take charge of your own...
  12. Because doctors are pretty ignorant about Celiac. Neither of your children were given a complete celiac panel, they are missing two of the most specific tests, and because your son is IGA deficient, the celiac tests they ran on him are invalid. They are missing the DGP (deamidated gluten peptides) and the EMA (endomysial antibodies) I believe there is...
  13. Go on the diet. An allergist cannot help you. When her constipation, distension and bloating start to disappear the first week, you will realize that yes, your daughter has celiac. Perhaps your dr will agree with you, perhaps not.what matters is you address it now, before she gets very sick. Lowish positive numbers usually mean that intestinal damage is...
  14. Well- I ASPIRE to be, does that help? I was running a lot (30-40 miles a week) until 2 yrs ago when major anemia sidelined me. (Thank you celiac.) Now that I am feeling better than ever I have just started running again, and am planning on a couple 1/2 marathons this summer. Just started the Paleo diet and am curious to see how my performance will benefit...
  15. you are very likely still getting small amounts of gluten, and this is affecting your recovery. You sound very intelligent and capable, so this is where you need to use that and get creative and take charge of your own meals. Do not eat the food your mother buys or prepares. Stick to a very basic whole foods diet. No one really needs bread- it is a convenience...
  16. Ok, I am sucking down avocadoes and nuts and eggs and meat like a starving person- cuz I am starving! I would kill for a piece of Udis bread right now! Assuming this too will pass, just like gluten cravings did? Please say yes....
  17. False positive blood tests are very, very rare. It is very likely her biopsy will be negative however as celiac is patchy and easy to miss. Do her a huge favor, and go gluten free today. She has Celiac, whether it is advanced or not, and her health issues will become myriad if you don't address it now. It seems overwhelming, I know. Myself and both...
  18. Many hugs to you! If you have the benefit, take advantage of that. Rest and reducing stress does much good towards helping your body recover!
  19. Gotcha! Yes, reducing inflammation and rebalancing my gut bacteria are my primary motivations. Having seen how much better my skin is now that I went casein free too has really clued me in on what food has been doing to my body. I just want to give it the best chance for healing and functioning properly. And yes, I LOVE almond flour- have a gluten-free carrot...
  20. This probably isn't the right forum, wasn't sure where to post it, so I apologize. How strict do you need to be to reap the benefits? Like- I use organic coconut "butter" spread- obviously this was not something caveman had access to- but what is in it, coconut oil, sunflower oil, lactic acid and salt- seem pretty ok. What about using almond flour...
  21. Even dx celiacs can have very hit and miss reactions especially in the beginning. Mine were so random I never would have connected it to gluten, had it not been for the biopsy and blood work that said otherwise. I could eat a donut and sandwich one day and be fine- the next day pancakes might send me running to the bathroom! No clue why it works that way...
  22. Lol- teach me to look at the date and not just assume it is recent just because it got bumped up top!
  23. For me, the scale didn't budge until I eliminated all casein as well, not just dairy products, but every bit of trace protein. Been losing steadily since then. I have read that if you are intolerant of a food, your body will store fat to absorb what it views as toxic, thus protecting your vital organs. I do not know if that is fact or not, but it certainly...
  24. gluten-free girl- your standard chocolate bars/ chips all have dairy in them. Several brands of semi-sweet chocolate chips that don't though. Enjoy Life also makes dairy free chocolate bars (Boom Choco Boom) which are good- taste a lot like a Nestle Crunch bar.
  25. Our family eats them all the time (3 of are celiac, 1 is super sensitive) and have never reacted. Almonds are high in salicylates, perhaps that is what you are reacting to. Or maybe it is almonds in general? My celiac mom gets gluten-feeling from eating any almonds. Try another brand, or just steer clear of almonds for awhile and then try again. You aren...
