  1. Good for you for not letting flawed medical tests prevent you from taking care of your health! It would seem you caught celiac when it was just taking hold, before it destroyed your guts- so what a great thing! It is very typical for the response to gluten to become much more violent when you have been gluten-free for awhile. Your body does NOT want...
  2. I second what Dani said. You survived- and most likely haven't done lasting damage. And you didn't intentionally eat gluten. In the same situation, I would probably do the same rather than trying to explain to street vendors who speak a different language what gluten is!
  3. ok, THAT is funny. Poor doc! Yeah, I am sure celiac is at the root of what is wrong with him. At least he mostly is gluten-free. My ignorant siblings refuse to even consider the possibility that they could have it, despite having 4 dx celiacs in the immediate family, and one un-dx but OBVIOUS celiac! Cuz they are "just fine" ...my sister lives on antidepressants...
  4. I appreciate it, but it is no use. Two days ago he matter of factly stated that he didn't expect to see 65. When I got teary talking about my kids and how much they would miss their grandpa he shrugged it off with, "they'll get over it." Dad has been depressed his whole life. No amount of nagging or pleading would ever get him to seek help though. So he...
  5. It sounds A LOT like Celiac. Unfortunately, being gluten free for 3 weeks may have caused her antibodies to drop below detectable levels- but maybe not. My son still tested positive (but barely) after nearly a year of strict gluten-free. Mine and my daughter's antibodies dropped to zero almost immediately however. Keep her eating gluten for now, as they...
  6. It isn't dumb if it is the only option. He is a grown man and I love him. He is the only dad I have. But he is nuttier than a fruitcake and will NOT go to a dr. He has a crippling disease called Dupuytrens Contracture. The tendons in his hand are shortening so that one hand is almost in a claw position. Surgery would fix it. Dad won't have it done, and...
  7. Have some real deep dish pizza for me too! And maybe a luscious pudding filled doughnut? And yes, you have a bang up doctor!
  8. Well, if you want to get tested, you have to go back to eating gluten NOW, and probably continue eating it for several months before you can be tested. And then it may still be negative. You may have non-celiac gluten intolerance, not celiac. Obviously, you know gluten is a problem for you- do you need a dr to agree with you?
  9. Not necessarily. Celiac is a sneaky thing- sometimes it just doesn't show up in bloodwork. You should still get the full panel of celiac bloodwork done- ttg IGA, ttg IGG, total IGA, DGP and EMA
  10. Now that I re-read your post it makes sense. I just read it too fast the first time, sorry! As for periods..argh...what a pain. Mine is so ridiculously unpredictable in heaviness- I feel your frustration. I have been having some success with saw palmetto though. With the hair growth too though you may be looking at PCOS, so definitely see your obgyn. ...
  11. Yeah...really weird. We are a pretty private family! Maybe I will print off the page about low testosterone and give it to her cuz it "mentions muscle wasting as a side effect." Let her do the rest! Mom is worried about him too. I am thinking he just isn't eating enough though- or not enough fat and protein anyway. They eat pretty healthy- usually lean...
  12. Hmmm....don't think I will be inquiring as to if he has decreaseed sex drive or shrunken balls...he may be on his own here.
  13. There really isn't any way of knowing Roxie. Everyone is different, and it depends on how high your antibodies were to begin with. I had advanced celiac, yet my antibodies were barely positive, only 6. They dropped within days. Someone whose numbers are in the hundreds may still test positive a year after going gluten-free.
  14. Stick with whole foods- fruit, vegetables, meats, nuts- rice is fine, as is quinoa and corn. There are many specialty flours but I don't know if they are available in Bulgaria. Most of the processed gluten-free foods are pretty yucky tasting!
  15. "Normal" in quotes Gemini. Relax. I'm sure you are normal. Probably. Definitely.
  16. Is it possible that going gluten-free could have "triggered" a more active form of the disease- and since he is only partly compliant it is making it worse? I dunno- it is just so weird cuz all of his other intestinal issues are SO much better. A few years ago he appeared to have a stroke his whole left side was paralyzed his face drooping. He went to...
  17. It is definitely muscle wasting. His arms look like a little kids- and he has always been rock solid. A doctor...yes...do you know any who will come to the house and shoot him with a tranquilizer dart?
  18. Ok, time to step it up a notch. You should NOT be messing your pants once a month. You have to be much more vigilant about gluten cross contamination. If you are getting enough to make you that sick, that often- then you are damaging your body. So...first, take a close look at home. Do you have shared condiments? Cutting boards? Drawers, cupboards or utensils...
  19. He wasn't really "puffy"- he was overweight. But he always had a lot of muscle underneath. He has always been the kind of guy who could wrestle a bear- and win. he chalks it up to aging- but 63 isn't that old- and too change so rapidly??? I wonder what he is eating too. Not enough probably. He gave up dairy because it plugged his sinuses, so I am guessing...
  20. You found one. Welcome. everyone here can relate. Celiac sucks- no doubt about it. You just shouldn't have to think so darn hard about eating! And of course, by now you know there are great gluten-free alternatives to just about everything- but they are neither simple or cheap. So yeah...we get iit! What helps? Well...I personally imagine how much worse...
  21. Ok, My mom, myself, and both kids are biopsy dx celiac. My dad has had major intestinal issues for 40+ years, along with chronic indigestion. We are all pretty sure he is at least gluten intolerant, but Dad doesn't go to doctors, at all- so there was no testing and never will be. When Mom went gluten-free, Dad kinda did too. As in everything at home is gluten...
  22. I'm sorry! I can imagine how frustrated you are! Keep remembering the goal is good health- and you don't need a dx or a doctors opinion to obtain that!
  23. I just re-read your post and see that you are 21, not 18. Sorry. Also, I didn't make clear- while the disease goes into a "dormant" state during puberty a lot, it is still present- you just don't have noticeable symptoms. Often stress, pregnancy, surgery or illness cause the disease to "reactivate" when you have reached adulthood. It is the false "remission...
  24. It is 100% impossible to grow out of celiac disease. Frequently, the disease goes into a type of "remission" during puberty, which is likely what happened to you. Am I understanding that at 18 you have not started mmenstruating yet? This is very common in celiac as well, and is a strong indicator of needing to be on the diet also. There are 5 celiac...
  25. Ttg is just one blood test for celiac out of the 5 or 6 that they SHOULD do. Your ttg was negative. Your biopsy is somewhat inconclusive. You have some indications of celiac or chrons- but nothing definitive. Definitely try going gluten-free now. You have nothing to lose and it isn't as hard as you think. Start eating whole foods only- no processed stuff...
