  1. Summing it up, been gluten-free for over a year, recently discovered casein was an issue for me as it was causing acne. Cut it out completely about 2 weeks ago. Weight is falling off me every day (yay!) Skin clearing up (yay!) Energy thru the roof (double yay!) But....(there is always a but with Celiacs) my guts are a MESS. Anything I eat leaves me nauseous...
  2. Um, you may not want to go down the rabbit hole now, but much better to go down on your own then to wait until you fall in it. If you have celiac, you WILL fall. And likely your kids will too. Do NOT blow this off. Spend some time snooping here and you will see what your future holds if you do. Celiac doesn't go away, it just gets bigger and badder. Get the...
  3. Re cholesterol drugs: studies have PROVEN that eating 2 apples a day is MORRE effective than statins for lowering cholesterol. Google it, you will see the proof is not just anecdotal. Statins are HUGE $$' apples are not making anyone rich. Statins are very damaging to your liver. Why take something that is dangerous and less effective? _
  4. I went from being virtually bedridden, to couch ridden, to up and about but taking 3 naps a day still, to no napping but having to be careful to not overdo it or I would spend the next week in bed. It was a very gradual process for me over the first year. Now, a few weeks ago I removed all casein from my diet as I noticed it aggravated my acne- and that has...
  5. Mild celiacs is sort of like "a little bit pregnant." Now- you can have a mild amount of intestinal damage, or a lot of intestinal damage, but either way, they BOTH require a gluten free diet for the rest of your life. I emphasize that because you sound a bit wavery...perhaps I misunderstood though? Many of us who didn't feel we had noticeable reactions...
  6. I spent 30+ years without ever having gone a month without some cold, flu or virus it seems. I have been gluten-free for almost 14 mos now and have exactly ONE mild sinus thingy in that whole time. So I would definitely say, YEP! When your immune system is busy attacking your intestines, it can't be bothered to do silly things like, say, fighting...
  7. SSRIs are a lifesaver for many, myself included. Xanax makes me depressed however. Everyone reacts differently. Even if gluten is at the root of the problem, it can take awhile on the diet for depression/ anxiety to resolve. If you need to meds, take the meds. As long as they are gluten-free, they won't interfere with your healing. After awhile, when you...
  8. Ditto the above. When you go off gluten, it is like your body systems kind of go into shock. They don't know how to function properly. It takes time. Just relax, tell yourself weird stuff is gonna happen for a few months. It is unlikely you have any permanent nerve damage. Get your vit levels checked, rest, relax and ride it out. It gets better. I promise...
  9. Not soy sensitive, but my celiac kids both take them without issue.
  10. My daughters scope looked perfect doc said- biopsy showed definite celiac. Sons endoscopy looked normal- except for the fact that the food he had eaten 24 hrs before was still sitting there. Biopsy was celiac. My intestines were trashed to the naked eye, dr dx celiac on the spot, biopsy confirmed. Interestingly, my antibodies were only "weak positive"- both...
  11. I am a little confused as to the title of your post as it doesn't seem to relate to the text? I do know you are new to the gluten-free diet, and can reassure you that in the beginning, it seems like all systems just go "haywire" it is pretty common to feel worse before you feel good. Stick with your bland diet for a few months, then start adding in the...
  12. If you have active spots now, get to a dermatologist and have them biopsy the skin NEXT to the lesions for dermatitis herpetiformis. If that is your rash, than the answe is yes, you have a gluten "allergy" If you don't have the rash right now, the blood tests are not terribly expensive, and are very specific for celiac disease. You can find the list of...
  13. Oh ignorant doctors abound!! You can be any weight and have celiac. I was un-dx for 30+ years and was always a tad overweight. When I had my endoscopy the GI was shocked by the visual state of my intestines, he said it was obviously something I had had for years, and he couldn't figure out why I didn't have raging diarrhea. The fact is that some celiacs...
  14. So glad you were finally diagnosed! Many of us here went thru the gamut of seemingly unrelated symptoms and dismissive doctors before stumbling onto gluten as the cluprit. I really wish they would just do routine testing for celiac! I do hope your brother is getting tested asap?
  15. Actually, I have always eaten tons of good fat- my good cholesterol is always very high, my bad cholesterol quite low. I frequently eay avocados- just avococados, for a meal. I have researched Paleo, and I think for the most part it is a healthy diet, but I don't believe in the evolutionary theory behind it, I think most people have trouble with digesting...
  16. 13 mos ago when I was dx, it thought- "oh good, now I should be able to lose weight and my face will clear up." It was a long slow road to feeling better, but gluten-free did wonders for me. I felt awake, alert and energetic for the first time in my life. But the weight didn't budge. I analyzed my diet, cut out most dairy products, stripped out the processed...
  17. I am guessing that you are more of a "silent celiac" and had the parasite infestation not disrupted your gut function, it may have been some time before you got sick enough to be diagnosed. Very frequently, silent celiacs done have a noticeable physical reaction to gluten. I was a silent celiac, and was tested only because my son was dx. Yet despite not...
  18. Dairy is a possibility, or ot could be withdrawal from gluten and dairy. Most likely though you are either a) getting cross contaminated with small amounts of gluten, which you are now reacting too since you have gone gluten free (very common to developed increased sensitivity once you take gluten off the menu, has to do with the immune system recovering...
  19. How far along are you? You may find your pregnancy progresses smoother once you are gluten free. I would recommend having your vitamin levels checked, specifically A,B,D,E,K and iron? Ferritin. Celiac affects absorption and deficiencies are common- your dr may need to increase or change your supplements. As for learning the ins and outs of the diet, that...
  20. Gluten intolerance can definitely play a role in endometriosis. I advise you to immediately start eating gluten again and get a full panel of celiac tests done. Then, regardless of results, try the diet. If you are alreacdy gluten free for any length of time it will cause a false negative test result. It is important to know if you are dealing with celiac...
  21. A positive blooc test is positive for celiac. False positives are unheard of. Your daughters body is making antibodies against gluten- that is what the tests are checking for. There is only one reason it does that- celiac. A good dr would have diagnosed her with bloodwork alone. The OLD thinking was that a biopsy was needed to "confirm" They may have...
  22. I understand wanting a celiac dx as reassurance that you aren't "imagining" your symptoms. The reality is, most people who are gluten intolerant are NOT celiac. More and more doctors are starting to recognize gluten intolerance as a real issue however. If you feel better off gluten, then that is how you should eat, and it is really nobody else's business...
  23. How did we get through it....hmmm...I don't know. My son and I did not go through withdrawal (all 3 of us dx together) but DD did, big time! She had been asymptomatic, but once gluten-free she began reacting violently to even trace amounts, as in puking all night. She developed huge weeping eczema sores all over her body, was crazy fatigued and mean as a...
  24. Neither celiacs or tourettes is the worst thing to have. I am guessing if your husband was just dx that his is a mild case. There is a connection with gluten and Tourettes you know... Having children is always a gamble- they could develop or be born with any number of illnesses, and those of us whose children lose that bet, love them all the same and would...
  25. Yes devfinitely ask for copies of the labs and post on here. Few docs run the complete panel, or even the most up to date celiac tests!
