  1. You have your answer I think. You know what makes you feel bad. A blood taste only dx MOST celiacs, not all. And it does not dx people who are gluten intolerant but do not haPpen to mage antibodies against it, who are in the majority. So...it is quite simple. Want to feel good? Don't eat gluten anymore!
  2. Ugh. The ignorance that pervades the medical profession overwhelms me. You are the customer, you pay the bill. March back in there and politely but FIRMLY tell them what tests they need to do.
  3. I know my aunt who is celiac was swelled up like a cartoon fat person her edema was so bad. Even her SCALP was swollen and squishy. Once she went gluten free it was like someone stuck a pin in her. Gluten can DEFINITELY cause edema. Warts? I dunno. But nothing aout celiac surpises me anymore. If someone said they grew two heads from gluten, I wouldn't doubt...
  4. A few months ago, I had a bad gallbladder attack after being glutened. In agony, I remembered that ACV could help tummy troubles. So sick I couldn't think, I poured a glug or two in water and chugged it. The relief was almost instant, and I had been throwing up and sufferring for over an hour. Last week, my 13 yo got glutened and was SO sick. Usually she...
  5. A few possibilities come to mind- are you certain you are 100% gluten-free? Its tricky business, gluten is everywhere and even tiny amounts could be responsible for your symptoms. What about cross contamination? Are you in a shared household with gluten eaters? If so, you need your own utensils, cutting board, dishes, toaster, etc to stay safe. What...
  6. I agree. Request a full celiac panel, and insist the dr take several biopsy samples- many do only 1 or 2 and it can easily be missed. As soon as that is done, start a gluten-free diet. Testing only dx a fraction of people who have celiac, and it won't show non-ceeliac gluten intolerance either. Chances are very good you will find relief. As for the issue...
  7. She is not asymptomatic. She already has a second autoimmune disease. How many would you like her have? I agree with daninero- her quality of life does not have to be determined by what she eats. Yes it is an adjustment, and no, being gluten-free is not convenient. But your attitude about it will affect hers. Myself and my two kids were dx a year ago....
  8. You need to sit down and have a serious talk with your daughter about the kind of life she wants to have. It can be one full of drug change after drug change, electric shock therapy, even institutions if she does not make a commitment to the diet. Don't expect her dr or therapist to think you are anything but a controlling mother who won't face reality. The...
  9. Yes, welcome! Hope your new lifestyle will have you feeling better soon! If your family loves to cook, they can be a great asset in helping you make gluten free substitues for the pasta and bread they traditionally serve. Expect a lot of duds in the beginning though- gluten-free cooking definitely has a learning curve! You don't have to give up the foods...
  10. Oh, and as for egg- it is a common allergen. If it gives you noteable physical symptoms, that is your body telling you it is being harmed. Ditch the eggs for now. When you are feeling great for 6 mos' you can give it another try. In the meantime, don't be surprised if a few other food intolerances pop up. It is a common theme amongst Celiacs!
  11. I doubt that any damage to your shoulder or joints is permanent. People who have sufferred for many years with signifacant pain and inflammation of their joints often make a full recovery once they are completely gluten free. Supplements are not a bad idea, but don't go overboard because you are panicked. You can't force your body to recover and over-supplementation...
  12. Oh, and before my dx I woke up every day feeling like I had been beat with a bag of rocks all night. Now the pain is gone, but a tiny bit of cross contamination has me aching all over for days. Even my fingers will hurt. Your cont'd pain is likely from unintentional gluten you are getting.
  13. Just MHO...but- I would cancel the RA appt. Chances are they know little to nothing about the gluten connection. You will be subjected to a lot of expensive tests and told you are fine and you will feel like a bozo. It is pretty clear gluten is your problem. You don't need a dr to tell you that. Now, because you went gluten-free for a bit, you allowed your...
  14. Yeah, we do have the water bottle thing at Walmart- which is still a 30 min drive but since they are such big bottles, they would last. Not sure where I could store them though. I have the weirdest house ever for a floor plan, and little counter space! I will have to do some thinking on it! Thank you for the suggestion. I am also chuckling over your "chemical...
  15. Congratulations! I know what a relief it is to have a dr at least acknowledge that there is a genuine physical cause for your illness! Sounds like your phys is an enlightened one! Hope you get more answers soon!
  16. Some good ideas, thank you! Unfortunately there is no Sam's Club or wholesale buying place within 2 hours. I wish there was! The suggestion of more stir fries and stews is a good one. I seem to forget that option! Prior to being gluten-free I wasn't much of a cook- everything came out of a box and was covered in cheese! So cooking REAL food is a new experience...
  17. Our family of 4 is entirely gluten free. 3 of us are dx Celiac, my husband is I suspect intolerant, and also has high cholesterol, high blood pressure and ridiculously high triglycerides- so are options are limited to very healthy foods. I don't do any packaged gluten-free foods, very few packaged foods at all actually, with the exception of gluten free...
  18. And in addition- no, a little is NEVER ok. Never, ever, ever. Ever. You may just have tingling NOW. But if you continue to assault your body with something it views as poison, your immune system WILL respond in increasingly damaging, possibly permanent, and even life threatening ways. Be firm, be matter of fact, and don't let someone who knows next to NOTHING...
  19. I have a very simple reply when people make an uneducated remark about how a little is ok, or how "so and So is Celiac and they can eat a little bit. I say sweetly, "Well, I would rather not end up having to poop in a bag when they cut my intestines out, but they might be ok with it..." Poop in a bag is generally an excellent conversation stopper.
  20. Thank you everyone for your kind words! When I was diagnosed I did not have "classical" Celiac symptoms-those were long ago in my childhood and I think my body was just too tired to bother with the chronic diarrhea and vomiting that I had for years. As an adult I now had depression, terrible interstitial cystitis, low immune function, chronic fatigue, rotten...
  21. Welcome Malissa, and mamaw is right- smart doctor sending you here! you will find everything you could possibly need to know about Celiac from this forum. More importantly, it will be accurate information! Much of what drs and nutritionists will tell you, or what you read in books or online is outdated, or just plain wrong! The people on this forum have exhausted...
  22. Sounds crazy, I know. But I really DO feel lucky! A year ago today I was diagnosed, and had that not happened I would still be the same depressed, sick, miserable person that I was for the last 30 years. For me, the diagnose was a life saver. Had it been negative, I may have tried the gluten free diet at some point, but I know myself, and I would have cheated...
  23. Thanks for the answers- I think I will stay away from it as well. The point about the seeds in the yard was a valid one!
  24. I saw these for the first time last night. I bought the almond cranberry and it was yummy! The coconut one contains oats though- anyone know if they are gluten-free oats? I was a little nervous to try it....
  25. I wish I could tell you WHEN it would get better- but I CAN tell you it will! Myself and my two kids were all dx last April, and our individual recovery has gone very differently. I have had Celiac for 30+ years and was so used to feeling awful I didnt dare imagine what it was like to feel good. Chronic fatigue, interstitial cystitis, no immunity to viruses...
