  1. I sent in a complaint as well. Probably won't do much good but it's the only thing we can do.

    ARCHIVED Vitiligo?

I have vitiligo as well. My white patches were about the same this year as they always have been. Every summer it's a bit of a surprise to see where they will show up. It doesn't bother me though at all but I also have been lucky enough not to have any patches on my face for many years. When I was in junior high I had a patch on my forehead and where...
  3. Yes. I baked hundreds of loaves of wheat bread on my stone. I ran it through the self clean cycle, brushed/scraped off all the ash and residue and then did it again just to be sure and it looked like new. I use parchment on it if I'm doing something like biscuits or bread because gluten-free dough is really more like batter and can be CRAZY sticky but I do...
  4. It might take time to replace everything you have to get rid of but it doesn't have to take time to go 100% gluten free. It is really important that she is 100% gluten-free starting immediately. If that means you live without a knife block or a good cutting board or a toaster for a while then you just have to make do. Also, if you are a baker you will...
  5. I replaced my cutting boards, wooden and plastic utensils, pots and pans (mine were all nonstick and 8-12 years old) and sieves and collanders. I took my stand mixer outside, put a mask on and blew out the motor and all the nooks and crannies with a can of compressed air. Then I scrubbed it down. We have a toaster oven instead of a regular toaster...

    ARCHIVED Coffee Ugh!

I have tried coffee from a variety of sources, caffienated, decaf, organic, regular, locally roasted, factory roasted... it all makes me feel like I've been glutened. I know that anectodes are not data but my experience is definitely that my body sees coffee, thinks gluten and takes a few hours to sort out the mistake.
  7. One other thing to think about not related to your kitchen is all the phones, remote controls, tables, chair backs, light switches, door knobs etc in the house. If people touch it, somebody needs to wash it. We replaced the computer keyboard rather than try to get all the crumbs out of it.

    ARCHIVED Coffee Ugh!

Pricklypear, I could have written your post! When I have coffee now I feel glutened for a few hours. Brain fog, nausea, major fatigue and headaches. I was heartbroken to give up coffee, I love coffee. I've replaced with with Chai. I drink a lot of it. I find it more satisfying than other teas because it has such a complex flavour. I have at least 6...
  9. I also think my infertility and miscarriages were indirectly caused by Celiac. After the third one I was tested for various things that cause miscarriage and had the AntiPhospholipid Antibody Syndrome (an autoimmune syndrome) test come back faintly positive. On my next (and last) pregnancy I injected myself with blood thinners every day and had a succesful...
  10. I have learned that I am not a lazy person. I have believed all my life that I just simply wasn't as smart or as driven as everyone else but I was wrong. My food was poisoning me. I am smart and driven and energetic. I have accomplished things in the past 6 months that I never dreamed I was capable of and I'm just getting started.
  11. They are gluten free in Canada. I haven't actually eaten any myself since going gluten free but I may try them some day.
  12. French toast (made with Simona's Challa I baked yesterday) and bacon. It's only 3:50 here and I'm going to go start cooking because I can't wait any longer!
  13. The whisk attachment on my Hamilton Beech heavy duty mixer snapped in a batch of gluten free cookie dough.
  14. I'll take a look. I go to the health food store on the last Wednesday of the month because everything is 20% off for that one day. So I'll add those ingredients to my list for next week.
  15. I absolutely have the time and inclination, just need a good, reliable recipe. I've got a stone in the oven just waiting for a pizza crust. I am a stay at home mom. During the day my hubby is at work and the older 4 kids are at school so it's just me and my 2 year old. I love baking.
  16. I haven't been able to bring myself to spend $7 on one smallish pizza crust so I haven't tried the Udi's one yet. I think I'll give it a shot for him though. He's not formally been diagnosed with a gluten intolerance but we noticed a shocking improvement in his behaviour when the whole house went gluten free in June. He had been referred for assessment...
  17. I love the Kinnikinnick crusts and always have a box in the freezer. I tried to serve it to him a couple times but he didn't like it. The crust is a bit sweet which can be weird. I think I'll try again now that it's been several months since he last had gluten pizza crust.
  18. My advice would be to skip the bread for a few weeks or longer. Your taste buds still remember gluten bread and gluten free bread is very different. After a few weeks grab a loaf of white Udi's or Glutino Genius. It's best toasted but a quick zap in the microwave might soften it up. If I was in a hotel my days would probably look like this (I am going...
  19. That happened to me this past weekend. My husband and I went out. I ordered sashimi, sunomono and a couple of rolls. He ordered some tempura rolls and I had D all the next day. Pretty sure it was a shared knife problem. Luckily for me those trace contamination episodes don't last long.
  20. I made the bread this evening. I made it as specified except I used salted butter and regular cow's milk. My dough was way too sticky to braid so I formed it into a roundish loaf on a piece of parchment on my pizza peel. After it had risen I slashed the top, did the egg wash and popped it onto my preheated baking stone. Slashing the top was a big mistake...
  21. I haven't found any in Nanaimo yet but hope springs eternal. I think it might be available in Victoria but I'm not sure if it's worth a 4 hour round trip to get some.
  22. Can I use cow's milk and butter?
  23. I had to explain to my 6 year old son this weekend that he might be the only kid in his class not getting pizza on Fridays. He knows that gluten makes him feel bad and I promised that we would go to DQ for a Sundae after school on every pizza day but I know it'll still sting when they are handing out pizza and they skip his desk. I hate school fundraisers...
  24. We are lucky enough to have 2 kitchens as our house was converted into an up/down duplex by the previous owners but we converted it back and kept the second kitchen. We are a family of 7. Myself, DH and the 2 younger kids (6 & 2) live upstairs and eat gluten free, the three big kids (21, 18 & 16) live downstairs and are allowed to prepare and eat...
  25. I've done it too. I accidentally bought the regular San-J Organic Tamari instead of the gluten free. Used it on at least 3 meals and couldn't figure out why my back was flaring up so badly until my husband noticed my mistake.
