  1. Kind of like this: ? Koilonychia. I have it too. It's caused by iron deficiency so make sure you're getting plenty of iron in your diet and you should continue to see improvement.
  2. Your MCV is right on the high edge of normal. A high MCV would indicate macrocytic anemia, which is NOT associated with iron deficiency anemia. So that makes sense. Your RDW is normal, but you have a low hematocrit, which could point to blood loss somewhere- I assume that's been looked into? An ulcer would cause some of the symptoms you mention and could...
  3. How interesting... you have a low red blood cell count and hematocrit (indicating possible anemia) and high ferritin (which would pretty much rule out iron deficiency anemia). Do you have the full results of your CBC? Specifically, mean corpuscular volume (MPV) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW)? Also, you might be interested in getting tested...
  4. I feel so much better in general when I bring a snack to work to eat at about 11. I try to have at least one protein and one veggie on the plate, and a fruit too if I can. For proteins: almonds, cubed mozzarella cheese, peanut butter For veggies: snap peas, carrots For fruit: plum, pear, apple, banana All of these things are really easy to pack...
  5. I don't know about Loloestrin, but have you considered a non-pill form of birth control? I'm on depo provera, a shot every 3 months, because it's cheaper, but you can also get little implants that last 3 years and IUD's that last 5 years. It's a million times more convenient, and no concerns about gluten as a binding agent.
  6. I've taken a ton of different meds over the course of my life for my severe (inherited, not gluten-related) anxiety. Nothing ever did an ounce of good, until I agreed to try one last time, found a good psychiatrist and she suggested sertraline. It's like night and day. You need to see a psychiatrist specifically (not just a general practitioner) if you...
  7. Me too, but it makes me sick if I eat it solo. Usually I have peanut butter or cheese at the same time.
  8. For most people, "pretty darned simple" is a bowl of chex.
  9. I'm making chicken scampi and a salad tonight. I got some Tinkyada pasta- I'm excited to try it and I hope it tastes good as it seems to be pretty readily available and it comes in a ton of shapes.
  10. Yup, I think it's helpful. I was pretty sure it was the gluten-free stuff as soon as I saw it because I'd never seen rotini at old spaghetti factory. I still asked to be sure though!
  11. Well, I'm normally inclined to trust a doctor about matters like this, but my understanding was that gliadin is the actual substance that celiacs react to, not gluten. Gliadin is a component of "true" gluten found in triticae grains (wheat, barley, rye) and that is what differentiates that true gluten from proteins in corn, rice, etc that are sometimes called...
  12. Just thought I'd share my experience with OSF. We went for my birthday, and sat in the bar for the whole meal because it was quiet and we could get seated right away. I asked my server what the procedure was for the gluten-free menu and he said that beyond the fact that all the ingredients were gluten free, he didn't know. He fetched the manager immediately...
  13. I'm responding to this in a personal convo if you don't mind, just cause I feel weird about taking over the thread talking about my lady region...
  14. I don't have a blender, my lame-o ex-roommate stole it. He left the kitchen table (which was his) though so... fair trade? I'm thinking of getting a good food processor though. I asked for one for my last birthday and received one of those magic bullets which is tiny and seems rather ineffective. I'm excited about the ice cream maker because all...
  15. Ohmigosh, have you had Costco's macadamia nut, caramel, and chocolate clusters? I don't even know if they're gluten free but you should check because they are GOOD. Haven't had them in a long time though cause my we moved to an area without a costco close by and then my membership expired... :'(
  16. Well, it did say somewhere that the mint blizzards are ok as long as you don't have cookies. Honestly, I knew it was a risk when I did it. For me food cravings have not really been a problem doing gluten free but for whatever reason I wanted that blizzard more than anything. Yesterday was my birthday and I asked for an ice cream maker attachment for my...
  17. I would kill to get your results. The last gyno I saw told me my pain was vestibulitis and said, "good luck!" My PCP suggested it was probably related to my chronic abdominal pain. I never considered that it might be related to my possible gluten intolerance... it's good to know other people have seen results on gluten-free diets. Eeeewww...
  18. You can have my flat cookie hockey pucks, too.
  19. I picked up some of these from Whole Foods the other day and they were absolutely delicious. They're "certified gluten free" if that means anything (I think by the same folks that certify Udi's). They don't mention that on the website but it was printed on the back of the package next to the ingredients along with a shared facility warning (milk, soy). ...
  20. Yes, and other times I feel absolutely ravenous. I eat pretty much the same thing for breakfast each morning but some days I'm eying the sack lunch by 11am. Other days, like today, I skip lunch entirely because I just don't feel hungry. I usually try to have a bit of something, a handful of nuts or a piece of fruit, though.
  21. I've had to quit the chex too. I find they make me very shaky and weak- almost a hypoglycemic reaction but I only have it with the chex, not when I eat other sweet things like homemade cookies, so I don't think it's actual hypoglycemia. It's a bummer, too. Cinnamon chex are really delicious.

    ARCHIVED Good Gi In Seattle?

I talked to my PCP a few days ago and she gave me a referral to a GI. I'd like to go because I like concrete diagnoses and such, AND I want to get some testing done to make sure I'm on track with my nutrient levels. Is there anyone here who can recommend a GI in the Sea/Tac area that knows her stuff about celiac disease/gluten intolerance? Preferably at...
  23. This is really old, but I found it via a search and wanted to provide personal experience for others who might find it. I've been gluten-free for only about a month, and I don't have a definitive diagnosis (trial diet) but I went to DQ yesterday and wanted a blizzard desperately- got a mint blizzard with chocolate chips. I asked them to clean the machine...
  24. Oh man, it's great to see this. Old Spaghetti Factory is just about my favorite restaurant. My birthday is coming up and I wanted to go out but I was terrified of dealing with a restaurant... with all that crusty bread running around it seems like OSF would be cross contamination ground zero, but perhaps not. Did you get any info about their procedures?
