ARCHIVED Hair Loss - When Will It Come Back?
peeptoad replied to granolagal's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My iron was around 14 at its lowest and alopecia was definitely one of my symptoms. My level is still only about 25 after two years on supplements, but the hair loss was helped by taking iron pills. My hair is much, much better than it was, but is still not back to what it looked like about 5-6 years ago (before all my problems started). I took iron for close... -
ARCHIVED Low Blood Sugar And Gluten
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm back gluten-free now (for the past week), and the constant hungry feeling is gone. I had a bout of dizziness, shortness of breath last Friday, but it was due to something else (iron deficiency combined with anxiety over something completely unrelated). I think when I eat gluten my transit time speeds up dramatically, because I noticed that I was... -
ARCHIVED Challenging Gluten
peeptoad replied to jswog's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't have an official diagnosis either, and probably won't ever, since my bloodwork was negative. I did a gluten-free trial and challenge and gluten is very clearly the cause of my GI problems. I told my doctor this, just to FYI him and he told me I may have a gluten sensitivity, but not necessarily celiac disease. That's good enough for me I guess...... -
ARCHIVED Nail Problems
peeptoad replied to sariesue's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My fingernails used to peel/break and they were pretty flexible as well. I started taking biotin 5mg/day and it has helped a lot. -
ARCHIVED Celian/gluten Intolerance Vs. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
peeptoad replied to southernbelle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Re: bolded- this is exactly how my GI symptoms originally started... never knew celiac could start that way (or gluten sensitivity, as opposed to celiac). -
ARCHIVED Celian/gluten Intolerance Vs. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
peeptoad replied to southernbelle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is pretty much what happened to me originally, except that I didn't have a C-diff infection to start things off (I did have SIBO that was treated though). I had all sorts of GI symptoms which seemed to get worse with consumption of carbs and especially processed carbs. Of course my celiac blood tests were negative, and my GI doctor didn't really have... -
ARCHIVED Could Depression/anxiety Issues Be Due To Gluten?
peeptoad replied to EmilyH's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks a lot mushroom. After I posted I actually found an article on this site about depression and gluten that was quite informative. Interesting that gluten may block the absorption of tryptophan. I also suffer from insomnia and tryptophan was recommended to me once to help with that. -
ARCHIVED Nausea That Resolves With Eating Protein
peeptoad replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It could be a blood sugar issue... not sure though. This does happen to me sometimes, but I just cannot tolerate sugar in the morning. I have to eat something high-protein/low sugar for breakfast. Is it only in the morning that this happens to you? -
ARCHIVED Could Depression/anxiety Issues Be Due To Gluten?
peeptoad replied to EmilyH's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am not a diagnosed celiac, but at the very least I have a sensitivity to gluten (no full diagnostics were ever done though). I just did a trial gluten-free diet for 2 months and then re-introduced gluten and about 5 days into the glutening I was starting to feel depressed. I have a history of mild depression (as well as insomnia) from childhood, but have... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Or Not? What Do My Test Results Mean?
peeptoad replied to Kate129's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That range is interesting. I had this same test done and my result was <3 but the range was listed as 0-5, so my result was still considered negative. -
ARCHIVED Low Blood Sugar And Gluten
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That makes sense. That may also be why my serum ferritin refuses to budge even after 2 years on iron supplements (my doctor did request an occult blood test though). -
ARCHIVED Low Blood Sugar And Gluten
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hm, well I'm trying to figure out if it's a carb-thing or a gluten-thing specifically... I didn't have the extreme hunger when I was gluten-free, but I had it before going gluten-free and during my gluten challenge. I'm also on iron supplements for iron deficiency, but I don't think it's those because I've been on them for over 2 years now with no problems... -
When I started my gluten challenge last week I noticed, among other things, that I was extremely hungry all the time and I also felt mildly nauseated (periodically, not constantly). I was actually hungry (stomach growling, lightheaded) only a couple of hours after eating a lot of the time. I've experienced both of these things before on a normal diet containing...

ARCHIVED The Gluten Challenge
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Alright, last update: By day 7 of my gluten challenge the following IBS symptoms returned: abdominal cramping (painful, these woke me up both Saturday and Sunday morning) feeling of incomplete evacuation mild nausea bloating fatigue (even after sleeping 9 hours on Friday night) heartburn, which I never get and I got it without eating/drinking... -
ARCHIVED The Gluten Challenge
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, the GI symptoms gradually returned over the past 7 days, and the past two mornings I was woken up by painful abdominal cramps. Also, oddly enough, I began to feel very depressed late last week (about 5 days into my glutening). Maybe this is a coincidence, but I see no reason to continue with the challenge. That's enough to convince me that I have some... -
ARCHIVED The Gluten Challenge
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I probably should keep my GI doctor in the loop... maybe will send him an email next week after I finish my challenge. I started a food diary yesterday, mainly just to keep track of what symptoms started up when and how severe (or mild) they are. -

ARCHIVED The Gluten Challenge
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks. That's actually encouraging to me (sounds weird I know). I was actually relived to see the skin problems return because now I know there is at least one determined cause for something going on in my body. I'm so tired of negative lab tests and being told there is nothing really wrong with me. -
ARCHIVED Lab Results Are So Confusing!
peeptoad replied to 21daisygurl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Re: the bolded type. This is what confuses me about the lab tests... if a person's body recognizes gluten (or anything else for that matter) as something it needs to produce antibodies against, doesn't that automatically make that substance (gluten, or whatever) a problem for that person regardless of how much antibody production occurs? -
ARCHIVED The Gluten Challenge
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So, I'm now on day 5 of my challenge and my GI symptoms seem to gradually be returning. Is this normal for a gluten challenge? (as opposed to a sudden reaction, even if delayed by a few days). The only thing that has returned "suddenly" so far is the skin issue I was having on my legs. That started back up yesterday and has gotten worse since yesterday... -
ARCHIVED The Gluten Challenge
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My "gluten challenge" officially started this morning. I just ate a poppy seed bagel with cream cheese and tomato. That's my favorite breakfast and I missed it over the last ten weeks. I'm going to keep eating gluten for about 7-14 days, or until I get a reaction, whichever comes first. I guess delayed reactions to gluten are common, and my reduction of symptoms... -
Well, that would explain my GI doctor I suppose.

ARCHIVED Can Sibo Cause Celiac Or Gluten Sensitivity?
peeptoad posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I haven't researched this yet, so there's possibly a connection, but just wondering if anyone knows if SIBO can predispose a person to developing a gluten sensitivity? I've also read that a person can have asymptomatic Celiac Disease that is "stimulated" by some other condition (stress, or another GI issue, etc), so perhaps SIBO can do this? My GI issues... -
ARCHIVED Low White Blood Cells, Platelets & Ferritin?
peeptoad replied to vbecton's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Apologies for bumping this thread, but this is a very helpful post! I just got labwork back today and my white cell count is also a little low, as is my serum ferritin (this I already knew). I've been on iron supplements for 2 years now and it has only risen from 14 to 28, and I still experience deficiency symptoms. My celiac test was negative and my doctor... -
ARCHIVED Can Gluten Cause Skin Issues Besides Dh?
peeptoad replied to peeptoad's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Thank you! Keratosis pilaris seems the closest to what I was experiencing. I googled some pictures and my skin issues looked a lot like that, although not as severe as many of the pics.
