  1. Gluten avoidance? I also have NCGI and I didn't even know there was lab test for it...
  2. Thanks dreacakes. I do eat goat cheese (and other dairy) normally, so maybe if I eliminate just cow it will help me figure things out. I also read that most dairy (cow) problems come fro holstein and that milk from Jersey cows might not be a problem (something genetically is different about the milk they produce I think?)... might try to find some Jersey...
  3. Thank you! That's a good idea to test for casein intolerance... think I'll give it a try.
  4. Does anyone else also have casein intolerance? If so, what are the typical symptoms? Are they similar to gluten intolerance? How does one know if they are casein or lactose intolerant? (maybe that's too many questions at once, but I am confused).
  5. Yeah, I read on another site about a beer that uses gluten ingredients, but then adds an enzyme that is supposed to remove the gluten somehow. Not sure I'd trust that when there are several decent beers on the market that don't even use gluten ingredients to begin with (decent to me anyway, but I'm not a big beer drinker: Green's and New Planet).
  6. Okay, this clinches it. After the holidays I am going on a dairy-free trial for a couple of weeks... the KP is not a major issue for me, but in addition to that I have some other more aggravating symptoms which I have suspected are related to dairy. And it is a relatively common allergen/intolerance. Sigh... not looking forward to gluten-free and dairy-free...
  7. This is cool and I wasn't aware of this... do you have any more information about these new tests?
  8. The false-negative rate (maybe that's what mommida means) is about 25-30% and that's documented in a lot of medical literature...it's not really human error from what I understand, but just a diagnostic error for that particular lab test.
  9. Thanks to both of you for the details on the bread. I found a place that is (sort of) close to where I live that is supposed to carry this stuff, so I'll probably pick up a loaf of each (assuming they have them) to test them out... I ate an entire gluten-free pizza for dinner last night, so I really think I should switch to low-carb bread!
  10. My mom made a stir-fry with some of her leftover turkey and it came out really good (and was very different from typical Thanksgiving dinner/leftovers, so a welcome change). The beauty of this is you can throw in whatever vegetables you like that would taste good ina stir fry. turkey (she used only dark meat) snow peas mushrooms scallions or onions...
  11. Someone on this board (can't remember who, sorry) helped me with this last year and the advice they gave was really good (I had a negative blood test and no biopsy, so I am still not diagnosed technically). I think this would work better for someone who has some symptoms they can use for diagnostic purposes though: Quit ALL gluten for at least two months...
  12. How does the coconut bread compare to almond paleo bread? Have you tried that one? I seem to have a problem with certain FODMAP foods, and coconut is usually on that list (though I'm not sure about cocnut flour, per se). I am totally cool with almonds though... this bread looks really good andI'm searching for gluten-free low-carb options these days because...
  13. Glad I checked this thread... I have what my GI doc suspects is recurring SIBO, and exactly what you describe about the "backflow" of waste is what I'm struggling with. (Basically the backflow of bacteria from colon into the small intestine). I never knew that actupuncture could be used to help with this... I'll definitely look into it now!
  14. I will check the DH section (I think I did this once a year ago, but will check again). I think when I looked before I thought maybe these spots were not DH (based on someone else's description). They only occasionally itch, and they are sparse (not a lot of them when I get them). I am not DXed celiac, but rather "gluten intolerant" and I do follow a gluten...
  15. I agree with Rosetapper. I also had a negative blood test and no biopsy done, and my GI doc said he "presumes I do not have celiac, but am just sensitive to gluten". Anyway the treatment is the same... I do go through periods where I wish I knew for sure since intolerance does not necessarily damage the villi, but celiac does and I don't want to predispose...
  16. I have what appears to be a very mild version of this. I'm not sure if it's actually the same thing, but mine is definitely gluten-related (so it may not be the same thing). If I eat gluten for 2-3 days in a row, then I wind up with these small, red hive-like bumps on my thighs and lower legs. Sometimes they itch ike crazy, other times I can't feel them...
  17. I was neither depressed nor anxious before going gluten-free, but when I went gluten-free as a trial and then reintroduced gluten for a week I was extremely depressed by the end of the week...
  18. I've thought about this as well (and also in relation to thyroid disease). I had antibodies present on my celiac blood test, but they were below the level used to diagnose celiac, so I was labeled "non-celiac gluten intolerant" or something like that. I've also had thryoid anitbodies show up on tests before (and I do have some thyroid-type symptoms), but...
  19. I don't know since my test for fructmal was negative (though I definitely have problems with sugar I think it is bacteria-related, rather than the type of sugar). I do remember reading that, depending on the cause of fructmal, you don't need to cut it out completely, but avoid large amounts and if you "temper" fructose with glucose it will help (glucose helps...
  20. Haven't had the lactose bt done, but the fructose one took less time than the lactulose for me... I think it was 2 or 3 hours, whereas lactulose took about 4. Just make sure you bring a book to read (or preferably a magazine, since you will get interrupted every 15 minutes or so to expire into the machine).
  21. I've had it done four times now... but I live in the States. I got it through my GI doctor, so you may need to see a specialist in Canada to get it done. I think some primary care doctors here might do it, and I know of other GI docs who know nothing about it, so it varies. What are being tested for? SIBO? Fructose intolerance? The type of sugar and length...
  22. I am in the same boat you are... no biopsy done beacuse I was already gluten-free, positive response to diet, etc. I am also curious and did a challenge last year: it took 3-4 days for my symptoms to show up and the first thing that happened was a rash (hives) on the inside of my knees and thighs. It took another 48 hours for the GI stuff to start and I...
  23. Last year was my first gluten-free Thanksgiving and we just used the standard stuffing recipe that we'd been using (my Grandma's), but substituted gluten-free bread instead (I toasted a bunch of UDI's white sandwich bread and crushed it into breadcrumbs). I thought it came out fine... for a gravy thickener I just use cornstarch instead of flour. I suppose...
  24. Let me guess: your doctor won't run this test for you either? The third time I aksed about my T3 my doctor finally just flat-out lied to me and said it was going to be done and it wasn't... I don't think insurance companies like this test being ordered for some (probably money-related) reason.
  25. Thanks. I was aware of the false-negatives on blood test, but wasn't sure how often people actually got the biopsy if their blood turned up negative. It's a good thing in your case (as you say) that everything was ordered all at once. I think it's probably much more common for a doctor to not order the BX if the blood is negative...but I wonder how many...
