  1. How common is it to have a negative blood test and a positive biopsy? My blood test was negative and my doctor (maybe with good reason) never went any further with testing and dismissed celiac. About a year or two later I found out onmy own that gluten was one of the major culprits in my GI problems, so I went gluten-free. A year after that I had a routine...
  2. I would definitely ask your doctor to check your serum ferritin. I was gluten-free for almost an entire year before my ferritin started to rise (and that was taking iron supps 3 times day). Hair loss was deifnitely an issue for me and has gotten much better since going gluten-free and adding in iron (and starting to eat meat again- I was formerly a vegetarian...
  3. I get PVCs even when I haven't been glutened... although so many things can be connected to the consumption of gluten that it wouldn't surprise me if the two were connected.
  4. I have gluten intolerance/sensitivity not celiac (afaik), and I've also had SIBO for the past several years. In terms of diet the main things that cause problems with SIBO are sugars and other carbs. Just limiting carbs overall helps me with the bacteria and also the gluten issue.
  5. I had the hydrogen breath test that Bubba's Mom described. They normally use lactulose for SIBO specifically because it's a non-absorbable sugar. I've had this test done 3 or 4 times over the past few years and it's been positive every time. I was tested once for fructose malabsorption (uses fructose instead of lactulose) and that was negative, so I know...
  6. I've had recurring SIBO for about 7 or 8 years now... symptoms and the type of bacteria can differ from person to person, but generally antibiotics are probably the fastet way to get rid of it. Unfortunately the overgrowth can recur in some people, depending on what the cause is (and the causes are many and varied). Personally, I've had the best success with...
  7. Has anyone experienced nausea after taking melatonin?
  8. This is my problem right now... I have a really hard time getting my self to use the hand weights. I love, LOVE aerobic exercise (walking, running, hiking, love it all and do it all the time), but I just can't seem to get myself to lift wegihts even though I know that's what my body needs. OP, I second the rec to get your thyroid checked if all else...
  9. Yehuda makes a gluten-free matzo. They carry them at my local supermarket (just saw them on the shelf yesterday). I don't have a recipe though, sorry.
  10. My dad has collagenous colitis. He was on Entocort for awhile, but now mainly just a modified diet and that seems to keep him in remission. The main things he avoids are beans/legumes, large amounts of raw vegetables (particularly leafy greens, bell peppers, etc) and a few other things. You might try the FODMAP diet, or some modified version of ti to...
  11. I no longer have these, but suffered with them for the first 25 years of my life. The aura would precede the actual headache by about an hour or so and it appeared like a "sunspot" (like when you look at a bright light for too long) and always in my peripheral vision. I had a script for Tylenol #3 (codeine), but honestly it didn't do much except add to the...
  12. I need to remember that sarcasm doesn't translate very well on the internet...
  13. I won't even try the Red Bridge since it's made by Anheuser-Busch The only two gluten-free beers I've found so far that are tolerable (imo) are the aforementioned Green's and New Planet Pale Ale. The New Planet is my favorite, mainly because it comes close (close, mind you) at capturing that "pale ale" flavor. It's still light on body compared to real...
  14. I don't know for sure that the rifaximin worked because I did not have a follow-up breath test, but the four times I've taken it my symptoms (abdominal distention and incomplete evacuation/poor stool quality) have all disappeared by the end of the course. So I think I can reasonably assume that it worked? On your recommendation and another I got from a different...
  15. Well, as a quick follow up (if anyone cares) the rifaximin did the trick... but my doctor thinks I have small bowel dysmotility (not his words, but I'm putting two and two together). Seems he's right since I've had SIBO recur 4 times over the last 3 years. Now on Reglan which I'm not happy about at all... it's already starting to make my insomnia slightly...
  16. Responses in bold. Do you think I should pester my GI doc about the stool test for specificity (even with symptom-improvement on the rifaximin)? I also mentioned hypochloridia to my doctor well over a year ago and he didn't seem to think that was an issue due to my age... ??
  17. In addition to presumed non-celiac glucose intolerance I've been battling recurring SIBO for the last 5 or 6 years. Was finally diagnosed in 2009 and I'm now on my 4th course of rifaximin (antibiotic) over the last two years due to relapse/recurrence. I know there are a number of other people here with current or past) SIBO and I know it's common for it...
  18. I was symptom-free for 6 months after going gluten-free and my main symptom now (suddenly) is abdominal distension. I had this before with bacterial overgrowth (in the exact same way), so I suspect that what the issue is again. As an example I drank a small amount of orange juice (with my iron supplement, I"m also taking iron) last night when I got home and...
  19. Forgive me because I did not read through this entire thread (just skimmed it), so someone may have already mentioned this: Coconut milk is a high-FODMAP food (excess fructose I believe), so some people may react to that in addition to (or instead of) the trace gluten (if any). I personally cannot eat any of the coconut milk substitutes because I get EXTREME...
  20. Well, I couldn't stand it any longer and emailed my doctor yesterday... going back on rifaximin for a week or two and see if that helps.
  21. Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth
  22. Thanks. I've been through two recurrences of SIBO already... I'm going to give it a couple of weeks and attempt to eliminate dairy again, in the off chance that I have a new food sensitivity developing. If no improvement then I'll email my doctor.
  23. I have PVCs as well and my doctor didn't tell me anything (except that they were benign and not to worry about them). I didn't realize there were supplements one could take. Anyway, I wouldn't take those based on the ingredient list (and not only for the gluten ingredients), but others may have differing opinions.
  24. Hello all: I am undiagnosed celiac (but "diagnosed" as sensitive/intolerant to gluten) and have been gluten free for 6 months. All (or roughly 90%) of my GI symptoms (abdo distension, incomplete evacuation, etc) disappeared when I went gluten-free and I have been symptoms-free for the last 6 month... up until about a 7-10 days ago. For the last week or...
  25. Can you give a little more information about this? I'm about to start taking sublingual melatonin because of chronic insomnia. Are the nutrients you're referring to simply magnesium and B12? I've taken magnesium before (250mg) and it gave me diarrhea, so I quit taking it. I even tried breaking the tablets in half and they still gave me problems.
