  1. Hey Amy! I'm from Louisville -- my daughter and son-in-law are students at U of K. The dietician I have here is EXCELLENT -- she knows SO MUCH about Celiac. If you strike out in Lexington, drive on over for an hour, and see this lady.

I agree with you about the health food stores . . . I have found that even though we have a competitive market here, with SEVERAL different health food stores, we still are lacking in variety when it comes to gluten-free products. Jen in Indianapolis has a MUCH better selection than we do, even.

I'm going to the conference in Columbus, OH so that I can get some more information, and to sample and purchase the gluten-free foods that we can't get here. It may be worth looking into for you.

I'm in Lexington fairly often . . . I'll look you up if you'd like!

    Lynne

  2. I think that I'm kind of "overly cautious" about Lyme disease because of an experience I had with one of my patients. I had seen her a week prior, and she was going on vacation -- camping with her husband and kids. She came in for her next appointment and I asked her how she was doing. She said that she had been doing the stretches, the self-mobilizations, but that her joints -- throughout her body -- were kind of "sore". She also said she thought she had been running a fever -- she thought she had the flu, maybe. I went to put electrodes on her low back (closer to her butt cheeks, really), and I saw what I KNEW was a tick -- with a bullseye around it, and the blistery rash, as well.

I tried to act really cool, I went back to my secretary had her pull up deer ticks and Lyme . . . . walked back into the room, asked her if she had a mole on her very low back. She said no, of course. So, I said, "Well, I think we may have a problem." Went on to tell her that she had a tick -- it was a deer tick, but it was HUGE -- so she must have gotten it the first day or so of her trip -- but she also had a bullseye and a blistering rash. She FREAKED OUT. She told me to get the tick off immediately!! Since I'm licensed to do scalpel debridement, and fundamentally, a bite with an inflammatory response around it is a wound, I was O.K. to remove it. I then had to find a primary care doctor for her -- and get her in that day. She DID have Lyme disease.

I'm not one to say that everything that happens to people is a result of Lyme -- in fact, our veterinarian wanted me tested for three different other types of tick-borne diseases because of our area. I am, though, pretty "aware" of Lyme disease. Clearly, however, it DOES NOT cause Celiac. Through all my research, I have yet to see a connection or causational relationship that Lyme disease causes the development of Celiac.

I'm sorry for what happened to that woman . . . it appears that she was on a "mission" to cure the world through the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease. It's unfortunate that she went about it, though, in the manner that she did.

  3. Gotta go with GFP on this one . . . this forum is an advertisement arena for Scott. That is fine -- it's his site. However, it is NOT a democracy. The idea of "open discussion" is not supported, and yes, if the moderators are specifically bad-mouthing one individual behind their backs . . .. well, that IS breaking one of the rules --just not publicly.

Then again, I've had a couple of bad experiences, but missed you guys enough to say what the He** and come back . . . .

  4. I LOVE Freeda vitamins! I am taking their prenatal because I was low iron, but I also take their CoQ10 and their sublingual B12. My dietician gave me an entire PACKAGE of information about them . . . she recommends them because they are free of so many irritants. I have had no trouble with them whatsoever . . . also, they're having a 20% off sale because of their anniversary year, I think . . . . I also had a coupon that was in my packet for $5.00 off, I believe. Ask them about any specials they are having. They are great to work with, as well.

  5. odcdinah: I was just talking to my DH on the telephone, told him about your post with regard to the Eddie Bauer outlet!! We were howling laughing!:lol:

We have decided that we're coming up Friday, Nov. 3 in order to hit the Eddie Bauer place -- that way we won't want to ditch the conference early when we really need to be there! Sounds like it is really going to be a good conference. Am looking forward to finding new foods, as well. Getting kind of tired of Peanut Butter Panda Puffs . . . .

Hey Chris . . . help me out here! PM or e-mail me as to where we should stay, where we should eat, etc. You are HIGHLY informed with regard to things of that nature (I know, I've eaten with you -- you speak with the entire staff, including the head chef -- how many people actually get to do that???) Wish you were going to be in Columbus then . . . would love to have dinner with you again.

So, guys, looks like it's a "go" for me and my DH! Will see you there!

    Lynne

mamaw: Thanks for the heads up about the freezer . . . . we're going to take a large cooler & dry ice packets. Didn't realize that there would be so many goodies to purchase. Thank you, too, for telling me about how much you spent last year . . . . that way we'll know to budget that into our trip. It's gonna be FUN!!

  6. Hi Amy -- Welcome to the board, and to the Wonderful World of Gluten-Free Living!!!!! :P I agree with the others . . . take it very slowly at first. I have only my DH at home, but he is also gluten-free. He does keep a few dinners "handy" to microwave just in case I'm not hungry, etc. We used to keep gluten-containing foods on a different shelf FAR below my gluten-free products, but now we only have one or two (his Doritos -- can't live without them), so we put them in a large Ziploc or something of that nature. I initially freeze all my gluten-free products for at least 24 hours, then I put them in Ball canning jars, label them and use a "food saver" accessory that seals the jars. That way I know that none of my products will be contaminated.

Once you start cooking gluten-free, you'll find things that are good, things that aren't. It's all an experiment, really. The Delphi list (I have a copy I can send to you on e-mail, if you'd like) is a compilation of all the information members have gathered with regard to gluten-free products. GFP made a VERY good point with regard to the cross contamination issue. Some aren't bothered at all, some are. My symptoms are neurological, so it's difficult for me to know when I've been "glutened"; therefore, I don't take any chances.

Make-up, face washes, etc. are a big deal for women if you wear them. I can give you more info on that, as well, if you need it. There are a LOT of other people who are far more knowledgeable than me -- they will help you greatly.

I think that you'll find that the people on here are intelligent, informed (and work to be that way), compassionate and VERY helpful. Just wanted to let you know, it gets easier . . . . .

    Take care of you, Lynne

  7. It did just dawn on me . . . . she had me scared out of my wits, as well! I looked at my husband the other night, and said "Have I been tested for Lyme disease?" He said, "Multiple times. Why?" I told him because this girl had written this post that scared me to death. . . . Had completely forgotten about that. And I've been diagnosed with Gluten Intolerance for a year and a half! I KNOW what's wrong with me.

  8. Dear Confused in Iowa: Welcome to the board! Ranting is what we do best sometimes :lol: Celiac is an autoimmune disease, and quite frequently goes hand in hand with diabetes and other autoimmune diseases, as well. I am so sorry for your son -- and you. What a challenge. Not only struggling with the diabetes, but NOW with another dietary restriction. You have every right to be angry, frustrated and I think, exhausted! I wish you luck, I'll say a few prayers for you if that's Okay, and know that you are NOT alone. This board has on it some of the finest people you will ever meet. They are intelligent, informed, constantly seeking out information in addition to being kind, compassionate and bust-a-gut funny!!! You've come to the right place.

  9. Just need to know . . . . this forum is quite political, in a sense. Some get by with a whole host of indiscretions, while others are immediately called to the carpet for minor indiscretions. Don't understand it myself, didn't see the thread that caused all the trouble, but have had my share of "beratement" from admin for reporting incorrectly. Certainly let me know that I was a nobody . . . . . .

  10. CRP is the test that they use to measure inflammatory responses in your body. Given that my joints are typically red, hot & swollen, they always draw that one . . . and it's always fine! Go figure.

With regard the prostate cancer issues in your family: when my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1993, his PSA was 143. Normal is under 7. He had a long talk with my cousin, who was in his late 30's at the time, told him to make sure that he had his PSA checked regularly once he turned 50. My cousin was so scared, that he went to the doctor and insisted on a PSA. Oddly, he DID have prostate cancer. With your family history, I would begin PSA testing VERY early. Just a suggestion.

Am looking up the rest of the values in my books and will get back with you tomorrow . . . .

  11. Hey Beverly -- I had my belly button pierced with Ashley when she was 16. It was back when I was wearing a size 7 (I'm 6'1"). After having a 9lb 13 oz, then a 9lb 6oz baby, it was like piercing a doggoned shar-pei!!!!! I told the girl to pick a wrinkle! Unfortunately, she picked up SEVERAL, and I couldn't find a belly ring to fit it (and it got infected and stayed that way for 4 weeks) so I had to take it out. Started feeling faint, so Ashley had to take it the rest of the way out for me. She, however, started gagging!
