  1. Holy cow! That's a lot of medical expenses! It's a good thing the medical deduction exists.
  2. I know it seems terrible at first, but trust us - you will get used to it and you will feel better. I wish I could help more about what to buy, but I just don't know what brands are available in Ireland. I know what you mean about not being able to have a beer (at a time like this you really want one, too!), but you can have hard cider as long as...
  3. It seems like most airports have at least one major fast food place, like Mcdonald's. Not the greatest food in the world but it's a lot better than nothing. Most places will also pack meals for you to take on the plane.
  4. Well it could be, no two people are the same. I have gotten it on my bum, but not quite in that specific area (close though). Good luck, I really hope that gets better.
  5. I can't think of any...... I do understand why the military is off limits though. Imagine being out in the middle of a war and having to run to the latrine every 15 minutes because your MRE wasn't gluten-free!
  6. I tried the Midel ones, and I didn't really care for them. WAY too sweet.
  7. I was diagnosed through bloodwork. My doctor offered to set up a biopsy if I wanted it, but I decided not to. For one thing, the course of treatment doesn't change based on the results of the biopsy. So it would really be telling me only what I already knew, that I have celiac disease. We decided that if I wasn't feeling better in 3 months that I would have...
  8. Is this a guy that you are interested in? If so, I would just tell him. Imagine if you guys ended up in a relationship and he found out that you were hiding something from him, wouldn't that be kind of weird? It's not like you have to go around telling everyone your complete medical history, but if you like this guy there is no reason to be afraid. Worse...
  9. I can't say that I have experienced this, but if I were you I would go see your doctor. I know it's embarassing and all, but you might be suffering needlessly. My mother in law had terrible hemerroid problems and ended up needing surgery to correct them, but now she is no longer troubled. Do you have DH elsewhere?
  10. I'm looking for a website to help me figure out the nutritional value of homecooked foods.
  11. Yeah I know, but it still won't even be close. I actually don't buy very much processed food, and even with other medical bills it will still be a couple grand short.
  12. Never. I don't think that I could intentionally eat something knowing it was going to make me sick. Also, my DH breaks out horribly for about 2 weeks after a gluten accident and there is no way I would make myself that miserable on purpose.
  13. I haven't even been keeping track because of the 7.5% rule. There is no way that the difference in cost is that much over a year (for us at least).
  14. I had moderate celiac disease symptoms for about 10 years and DH for 2 years. Then in the weeks before I was diagnosed everything just seemed to take a nosedive after being pretty stable for so long. I was pretty sick for a few weeks.
  15. I'm really impressed with the gluten-free menu items that this place has. I don't have an Outback within about 100 miles of where I live, but we do have Timber Lodge! I'm happy. www.timberlodgesteakhouse.com click on "menus" then on "gluten info"
  16. The other night I dreamt that my mom gave me a little bite of cheesecake, and I took it thinking that if she was giving it to me it must be gluten-free. But it wasn't, and I was so mad and horrified! I woke up in a sweat and I was convinced that it had really happened until I realized that I was in my bed and it couldn't have.
  17. Yeah, what is up with that redhead = delicate thing that everyone always tosses at me? Seriously, are we just considered generally deficient in some way? I've even had doctors blame stuff on my being "a sensitive redhead", that's what everyone kept saying about my DH "sensitive redhead". Well my mom, her 4 siblings and my 2 siblings are all redheads, as well...
  18. Wendy, you sound just like me. I was always "delicate" or "sensitive", my skin problems were either because I am a redhead and my skin is "sensitive" or because I had emotional problems. My aches and pains and headaches were from stress. On and on. Anyway, like I said before, I think the positives of the gluten-free diet so overwhelmingly outweigh possible...
  19. Hm, I do understand about the financial reasons. I used to take pepto (name brand though, I don't trust generics to be gluten-free) when my stomach was upset ie every day. It works about as well as anything else I've tried.
  20. I don't know anyone personally, but I have seen statisitics calculated for non-caucasions and, although it is not as common, it is most certainly possible. I would advise your friend to seek out another doctor.
  21. Also, even if there are some downsides, isn't being constantly sick and most likely dying an early death worse than any possible downsides to the gluten-free diet?
  22. For me the only real downside is that I can't just walk into any restaurant and order whatever I want off the menu. Physically I dont' think there is a downside. The gluten reactions seem more severe, but that may be because we are used to feeling good most of the time whereas before we were feeling pretty cruddy most of the time and being sick from gluten...
  23. I'm going to have to go with some of the others here. If her bloodwork was positive and she's sick and miserable, why not just start her on the diet and forgo the biopsy? I was diagnosed through bloodwork ( I don't know the numbers but everything came back a "strong positive"). My doc and I discussed it and decided that we would skip the biopsy unless I wasn...
  24. Yes, before going gluten-free and now when glutened.
