  1. Other autoimmune diseases do seem to show up with Celiac. Many of the members of this forum also have Hashimotos or Graves, both autoimmune thyroid diseases. Your 115 tachycardia could indeed be a symptom of hyperthyroidism. A blood test for the thyroid antibodies is a good first step, possibly followed up with a thyroid ultrasound. Thyroid peroxidase antibody...
  2. I was very easily agitated when my thyroid was misbehaving (hyperthyroidism/Graves). Meds now have my thyroid calmed down and I am much more relaxed about things in general. You might consider asking your doc to add a TSH test (and perhaps thyroid antibodies) to your next blood test... Good luck.
  3. Weight loss is not guaranteed but it is not surprising either depending on how your diet has shifted. I have dropped a few pounds since going gluten-free/paleo, mainly due to elimination of sodas, ice cream, beer, dairy and processed grain carbs and replacement with more vegetables and lean meat. Weight loss could also partially be a result of malabsorption...
  4. I would drop the arsenic supplement and consider replacing with a soothing (lower-risk) herbal tea. Milk thistle, ginger root, pau d'arco, dandelion root and goldenseal are just a few that are said to have digestive system benefits. Milk thistle is said to be good for reducing liver and gall bladder congestion so that might one to check out first. Some...
  5. I am a little near-sighted and have not noticed any changes yet (after about 5 months gluten-free)...
  6. You might consider lifting some weights also, assuming your joints do not protest. Something simple like dumbell curls or push ups. The act of pushing the muscles burns some calories but the real benefit is that any added muscle burns more calories just by virtue of being there.
  7. Your cholesterol and blood glucose numbers indicate metabolic syndrome. Gluten-free diet will help but will probably not entirely solve that problem. You might consider eliminating sugar, ALL grains, starchy vegetables like potatoes, yams, sweet potatoes, etc, and also dairy. Check out the wiki on "Paleolithic diet" for more info. I hope you feel better.
  8. Non-celiac people can still be gluten-sensitive and there are countless symptoms of gluten withdrawal. Everyone is unique so what you describe could be a withdrawal symptom. Your post however reminded me of something I went through when I changed my diet. When I first went gluten-free, I still ate a ton of gluten-free carbs, such as quinoa pasta, rice...
  9. I agree with other posts and would add that sensitivity to dairy/casein often accompanies celiac, but dairy/casein does not cause celiac, gluten is the irritant in celiac. Your post did not indicate how much gluten-containing food you feed her. Blood antibodies testing could result in a false negative if she is not currently ingesting much gluten.. If you...
  10. I agree with the crock pot suggestion. I set mine up when I go to bed and wake up to some delish hot food, typically enough for the entire day or more.
  11. Gut problems can goof up your magnesium level also. You might consider supplementing. I take 450 mg twice a day.
  12. I would encourage you to have her retested, Full celiac panel, sooner rather than later. Good luck.
  13. Gluten withdrawal, absolutely. Could be days, weeks, months or longer. First two months was the worst for me.
  14. Cross contamination is ALWAYS a risk. Best way I have found to manage the risk is to cook for myself, avoid eating out, and discontinue ALL grains. I now adhere to a strict paleo diet and rarely worry about cc since most paleo foods are low cc risk. Gluten withdrawal sucks, no way around it, but eventually the good days start to outnumber the bad ones...
  15. I am four months into it and there are still challenging days, but fewer of them with each passing week. If you remain strict and steadfast, the improvements will show up. Good luck.
  16. I drank kombucha for about two weeks, thinking I was helping my digestive system recolonize with good bacteria and then I read something about the yeast strains in the kombucha possibly having the opposite effect. Dropped it right away and now I stick with water and various herbal teas.
  17. pricklypear, I have never tried mint. I do drink lemon balm tea (melissa officinalis) occasionally, which I think is a member of the mint family, and have not noticed a problem with it. I will pick up some mint leaves next time I am at the grocery store and see how well I handle it. Never heard of weleda, I just found it online but I am going to see if my...

    ARCHIVED Diabetes

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis, although I guess it is better to find out "pre" rather than "post". The paleo diet community seems to have a lot to say about insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance. They assert that our high-grain western diet over time impairs our natural ability to metabolize glucose, resulting in higher levels of insulin flowing...
  19. SallyC, thank you for the suggestion. Frankly, I have been in denial about that possibility, not wanting to admit I might have yet another fairly complicated/serious issue to contend with. I will study up.. cavernio, I had not explored the stomach versus mouth angle yet. I just did the back-of-the-hand test on myself and while my breath was not minty...
  20. My dear wife informs me that I have developed some wicked bad breath. It seems to have started around the time I went strict gluten-free on Dec 1, 2011. I am also casein-free and soy-free and at the moment I am also avoiding eggs, pork, almonds, cashews and nightshades. Celiac test was not conclusive but I am convinced I am gluten sensitive and that the...
  21. I tried that test a few months ago, same recipe of 1/4 tsp baking soda and 8 oz water. No belch for me. I tried a second dose after about 5 minutes in and still no belch. I take an occasional tsp of apple cider vinegar with protein-heavy meals now, to augment my body's own stomach acid. I have noticed a little occasional heartburn lately after a meal with...
  22. Sort of off topic, but I grew up in Ohio with 2 Bob Evans restaurants within a 2 mile radius of my mom and dads house. I used to love the biscuits and sausage gravy. How much gluten would you imagine is in that meal? It seemed so normal then. LOL, I get a big chuckle when I think about this now, 20-some years and a life-altering diet change later...
  23. In short bursts, occasional juice dieting is probably ok. However, fiber is good for keeping the digestive system tone (among other things) and discarding the fruit pulp or vegetable pulp would deprive him of a valuable source of fiber. Otherwise, a long-term juice-only diet seems like a bad idea. The body needs protein to function, make repairs to itself...
  24. It was unclear to me if your current GI doc ordered a Celiac blood test panel on you or not. If he did, like Skylark said you will know something tomorrow. If he did not, then a Celiac panel would be a very good test to have run. If your current GI doc remains non-responsive, consider a consult with a new GI doc. You might also ask your doctor about...
  25. You might consider eating more of the gluten-free grains also, such as rice, quinoa, amaranth, etc, assuming your system can tolerate them and assuming you can control for CC. Something else that has helped me get comfortable in my new "underweight" body is calculating my BMI. Although I am now also quite thin (by Western civilization standards), my BMI...
