Next time perhaps you may try bringing a printout about celiac disease. Pharmacists understand anaphylaxis, but when a healthcare professional hears "intolerance" they immediately think, "oh, it's just going to give them gas." But if you educate them to celiac disease, not only are you helping yourself but also the next person who has to deal this this individual...

As a pharmacy student I can tell you that we aren't taught about celiac disease or even the word "gluten." We are taught the general information about most disease states, including Chrohns, PUD, and the other assortment of ulcer disease. However, with the majority of the health care field just now being brought up to snuff on gluten intolerances and celiac...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat

That sounds awesome! I've been craving Bulgogi for a while now, but I've never managed to make it taste like it came from the restaurant. -
ARCHIVED Need gluten-free Heartburn Relief
hexon replied to suziq0805's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For quick relief, I bought a generic bottle of tums from Kroger I think, and it doesn't contain wheat. But if you need something that will last longer I'd second the generic Zantac. -
You may be pretty limited on the fast food. I eat McDonalds fries on the go sometimes with no issues. My favorite place by far is Chik-Fil-A. Just about every time I go they take the extra time to make the grilled nuggets fresh, making sure they're safe. They're always really apologetic for taking their time to do it though, which makes me feel bad since...

I recently had the same thing happen at a Mexican Restaurant with tamales with white cheese sauce. No idea what was in them that got me, but I didn't have too much fun for the next week and a half. I feel your pain.

I havent seen normal cheese with gluten in it, but I ran into a Stout Irish cheese at Earth Fare the other day that probably contained gluten since it was made with beer. Sometimes cheese sauces, including fondu cheese, can have added beer for flavor.

ARCHIVED What Is A Safe Pain Reliever?

If Tylenol doesn't help you can try taking your advil with some food. The food will help slow down it's absorption so that it doesn't cause stomach pain/bleeding. -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe Help

This is the recipe I invented. They hold together well even if you don't use xanthan gum and they stay soft and chewy. 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 egg 1 egg yolk 1 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup soy flour 1/2 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoons hot water 1/4 teaspoon... -
If you put all of your items in a paper bag and put them in the fridge they will probably be too lazy to take the bag out and rummage through it to use things. In addition they'll use the stuff in plain sight before they think about checking out what's in the bag. Just write your name on it, or something fun like "stool specimen." I had an interesting time...

ARCHIVED Only Gluten-Free In The House Is Me, And They Don't Care
hexon replied to hpfan2016's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The issue with your parents not being able to find you safe ingredients may have something to do with them not knowing what to look for. Initially my mother thought she had to buy the expensive all natural, specifically labeled "gluten free," corn chips. She now knows some of the things to look for in the ingredient list, but I still double check all the... -

I was going to say the same thing. You're going to have to learn to follow some recipes and cook your own meals eventually. Why not tell your folks that you'll cook everyone's dinner if they spring for the ingredients? There are plenty of easy to follow recipes online for stir-fry, pastas, pizza, ect. Some may not be gluten free, but you can easily sub in... -
ARCHIVED Bartenders, Why Don't You Understand?

Don't you love those weird soda combos! I learned if you mixed Capt Morgan's Spiced Rum with Sprite it tastes like cream soda. Craziness! -
I wish I would have checked this forum prior. I ended up going gluten-free on the advice of a cousin who is also gluten intolerant, after getting my IBS dx. Good luck with whichever doctor you choose!

ARCHIVED Bartenders, Why Don't You Understand?

I always go for whiskey sour. But like others have mentioned you should be good with any distilled alcohol so long as some kind of gluten containing additive wasn't added after for flavor or coloring. The one good thing I walked away from organic chemistry lab with was knowledge of distillation. Basically your alcohol evaporates out of your mixture (of water... -

I didn't have issues with the Hornsby's Amber and I went through about 3 cases of it one weekend . Woodchuck is my favorite and their new 802 variety is awesome! And as a plus a lot of bars have woodchuck on tap, at least in TN. -
I went to Dr. Wooten too and I agree!! Terrible! He was very short with me and I walked away with an IBS diagnosis and pamphlets explaining it.

You've got a few things to look out for. Sometimes they dredge chicken in flour or spice it with some kind of mixture that contains flour. And with the veggies you have to make sure they don't boil/steam it in the same water they use for pasta. Assuming you've gotten that taken care of you have to make sure employees change gloves and use clean surfaces and...

ARCHIVED Rice Cooker And Pressure Cooker?
hexon replied to Mrs. M.'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I try to sell my friends on rice cookers. I just wish I discovered it during college when I lived in the dorms. I was always terrible at burning the rice on the bottom of pots and not being able to get it out. Now I just push a button and let it do it's thing and I don't have to give it a second glance. I occasionally toss in broccoli or beans mid-way through... -
Myself and my cousin have both eaten the gluten-free pasta there on separate occasions. Both times the pasta was undercooked (...or microwaved). I left feeling underwhelmed after spending $9 on a very tiny plate of tasteless pasta with marinara sauce. I'd probably have been fine with it if they at least gave me a normal dinner portion size. I guess it's a...

I was just making sure. When you google "cheddars gluten free" this is the first things that comes up and I don't want people getting sick thinking they can eat those recommendations, not realizing they are nearly 3 years old.
-
Just an update on this, I wouldn't trust those menu items. The manager told me the key west chicken is marinated in teriyaki sauce, but he was very helpful in letting me know what I could order or what they could do to make certain things gluten-free.

ARCHIVED Help Me Fix This Pound Cake
hexon replied to hexon's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Brown Rice Flour, Sugar, Tapioca Starch, Cornstarch, Baking Soda, Xanthan Gum, Flake Salt, Baking Powder So they are very similar in composition. Perhaps I just needed more flour. This is why I don't bake haha. When you cook you can taste as you go and add whatever needs to be added. With baking you just hope it's right when you put it in the oven. -

ARCHIVED Help Me Fix This Pound Cake

That recipe looks similar to the one I originally made, but using the loaf pan it made soup. I just don't understand why the cake mix worked but the gluten-free flour didn't. Maybe I just didn't add enough flour. The cake mix was very firm while the flour attempt was runny like normal gluten containing cake mix.
