  1. I've only been gluten-free for four months, and got glutened for the first time a few weeks ago. The symptoms definitely felt worse than I had previously felt on gluten, but it could just be that I used to feel ill every day so it was normal, and my new normal is so much healthier in comparison. The first symptom was a migraine headache, followed by two...
  2. LOL! It sure would be a surprise if her skinny "I was born this way" body started to actually absorb more food. and...I would KILL to eat a cheeseburger

ARCHIVED Going Back To The Doctor

All went fine with the doctor. She ordered blood testing (which I talked about in another thread), and she seemed legitimately interested in hearing about my gluten free journey, and was happy that I felt better. They also have a neat new system at her office where you can logon to a website and see information from past medical appointments and blood...
  4. I know this topic has been mentioned several times before, but I wanted to ask specifically about what my doctor said yesterday. She wants me to get tested for all common food allergies, as well as celiacs. I told her that I've been gluten free for four months, but she said that the test can still come back positive for the antibodies even with no gluten...
  5. I didn't have the rash, but your poop habits sound like mine were for a couple of years. Later on it turned into diarrhea and ONLY diarrhea, several times per day, for about a year until I stopped eating gluten. It cleared up quite quickly after that. Getting tested is up to you. I had given up on doctors who could provide no relief after years of medical...
  6. Right on! I am SO sick of hearing about "whole grains" as being health food. It's impossible to get away from the message. Turn on the TV in the morning and it's "Whole grain cereal can help you lose weight" or "Pick healthy whole grains for your kids". It's all smoke an mirrors. These "healthy whole grains" are nothing but genetically abused plants grown...
  7. Getting up and walking around is essential, as is drinking plenty of water. I often forget to drink enough at work, and it leaves me feeling bloated and sluggish. Also, eating a high protein breakfast helps me out a lot and I'm less likely to get the blahs at work.
  8. Are you under any more stress than usual? I used to have GERD, and medication didn't help me either, but it gradually went away when I finished grad school. It was mostly stress related.
  9. Someone else on the board mentioned magnesium the other day (can't remember who - sorry) and suggested using Epsom Salts, which is basically magnesium sulfate, in a bath to absorb magnesium into the body. Is this as effective as taking a supplement?
  10. Wow. That's a whole different level of rudeness! I'm so glad that we have a "smells" policy where I work. Strong perfume = instant migraine + nausea for me, so I feel your pain. Wearing too much perfume is just as rude as loud music bleeding through earbuds - if the whole room is aware of it, you overdid it.
  11. Thanks so much for the advice! I have been eating peanut butter, because it's one of the things that doesn't turn my stomach at the thought of eating it. It probably is a chain-reaction like that- I wasn't feeling well, so didn't feeling like eating, and now I've just gotten out of the habit of eating.
  12. I have a cousin who was constantly sick with stomach problems when we were little. She was always going in for medical tests, and going on restricted diets. I don't think they ever found the cause, or if she feels any better today (we live in different countries so rarely talk). My mom has had many medical issues, including hyperthyroid where she lost an...
  13. At 16 it's very possible that you'll continue growing if you cut out gluten altogether and start to absorb the nutrients you need. Guys typically keep growing for longer than girls, and it's not unusual for guys to keep growing steadily until age 18. There are other things that can stop you from growing too, like smoking. My fingernails have been growing...
  14. It's good to know that you continued to feel better even after a year+ of being gluten free. I can only hope that this is the same for me, and I'll only have better feeling days to come! It's great to hear from people who are already so far along the healing journey. The last time my trigs were checked (which was before going gluten-free) they were borderline...
  15. Can anyone who does attend a gluten free support group give us an idea of what goes on during the meetings? There is a group near me, but they require all participants to bring a gluten free dish and recipe card to each meeting. From reading their newsletter, it sounds like more of a cooking club than a real support group. I do think it's rude to not...
  16. When first going gluten-free about four months ago, I felt great. Better than I had in so many years, and it was such a relief. But since being glutened about three weeks ago I can't seem to get back to feeling good again. I got over the initial flu-like feeling, the stomach issues, and the anxiety. But now I have no energy and no appetite. They must be related...
  17. Adalaide - I could have probably written your post, and can so relate! I've dealt with that social self-doubt for most of my life, and wonder if the Celiacs has something to do with it. That feeling of not fitting in to an already established group has been the bane of my life, and I end up believing they won't accept me before meeting them, and then never...
  18. Unfortunately no. It WILL make you sick. I accidentally ate some gluten over a week ago and I'm still paying for it.

ARCHIVED Going Back To The Doctor

Thanks. I'm definitely going to write some things down, and also ask my husband to give me his perspective of how different I am off gluten. I'll google around for some of those articles. I had migraines for years, and they were getting more frequent all the time. Since I stopped eating gluten they went away within THREE DAYS! That was my first clue that...

ARCHIVED Going Back To The Doctor

Thanks to everyone who replied to the "How to trust doctors" question. The different viewpoints help put a lot of things in perspective. I made a doctors appointment for next Thursday. Basically, when I get glutened I have anxiety that really disrupts my life and take Xanax to overcome the really bad times. This doctor last prescribed that drug for me...
  21. Thanks for the response! It makes me feel better than this medication is gluten free. However, I called the doctors office and they won't give me a refill. I need to make an appointment first, and the earliest they can get me in is next Thursday afternoon. Oh well. I'll have to stick it out until then. Hopefully the glutening will be over by then...
  22. I don't know about the skin rashes, but hair loss can definitely be a symptom of fluctuating female hormones. When I switched birth control pill a couple of years ago my hair started falling out, and it freaked me out! Apparently it was just my body reacting badly to the different hormones in the new pill, so I switched back to the old one and the hair regrew...
  23. This is really frustrating. I was glutened last Tuesday and I'm still having symptoms today. They are also getting worse instead of better! I was up all night with stomach cramps, D and nausea, and still have lingering anxiety. When I first went gluten-free I was also lactose intolerant, but overcame that after a month or so. Is it possible that being...
  24. It may not have been the grapes, but a continuation of the glutening you got last weekend. I was glutened last week, and the D went away for a couple of days and then came back again yesterday. I wasn't glutened again, so my body is probably doing a rollercoaster recovery. I'm not sure how long the average gluten symptoms can last, but some people have issues...

    ARCHIVED Chipotle

Service and quality must vary a lot from place to place. The last time I ate at Chipotle (before going gluten-free) there was uncooked pork in my burrito bowl. I told the manager, and she didn't care at all and didn't even offer a refund so I just threw it in the trash. Ended up calling the local health department about it. It turned my stomach, and the thought...
