ARCHIVED Boyfriend With Celiac(need Some Input)
happygirl replied to spyderbabe's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think it will depend on the situation. Some couples (or families) find it easier to go gluten free while others find it easier to do things in moderation. And yet others have "gluten free meals" and then separate "gluten filled meals" each night. It sounds like your boyfriend, understandably, is having a tough time coping with this change of lifestyle... -
ARCHIVED American Dietetic Association-manual Of Clinical Dietetics
happygirl replied to kathy1's topic in Publications & Publicity
I actually might have it at home. After a horribly disappointing meeting with a dietician, I received a package in the mail (maybe six months later) with some info. The title sounds familiar so I'll check on it for you. If I do, I'll let you know and I can send you a copy! -
ARCHIVED Going To Atlanta In March....
happygirl replied to wolfie's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Yes-Outback has a gluten free brownie with ice cream. It is the "normal" brownie that they serve to everyone-no one "else" knows that that it is gluten free! I have eaten it numerous times and have enjoyed i thoroughly. you could try looking up the atlanta celiac support group-they might have listings on their website as to local gluten-free places to... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Alcohol
happygirl replied to swatson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
according to the celiac.com list of safe beverages: https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-16106580399.b6 gin and vodkas are both safe. it says "All distilled alcohols are safe" However, there are some people who do have issues with distilled alcohols. I don't know specifically about goldschlager or disarrono. -
ARCHIVED Going To Atlanta In March....
happygirl replied to wolfie's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I have eaten at the Pf Changs there, as well as one of the Outbacks. Don't know about local places though-but good luck! I think there are some people on here from Georgia-maybe they can help you out! -
When you say family, are you referring to your parents or to a partner? Are you living with anyone? Have you looked at potential cross contamination? Do you have separate butters, mayos, etc that haven't been 'contaminated' with a wheat product (i.e., a knife that touched regular bread?) What types of things are you eating---you mention how much you hate...

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble. Understandably, you are frustrated! Couple of questions- Were you diagnosed with Celiac Disease? If so, by bloodwork or biopsy? If not, why does your dr think it is gluten? How long have you been on the gluten free diet? Are you eating out? What types of food are you eating? Have you been tested for other...

for the progresso clam chowder-make sure you get the "hearty" or "rich and creamy" version (or something like that) as opposed to the "traditional." If I remember correctly, the traditional does have wheat in it, but the other one is safe (I eat it often!) Also, some of the "Amy's" brand soups are gluten-free. They are either on the normal soup isle or...

ARCHIVED Body Pain And A Drained Feeling
happygirl replied to Kim UPST NY's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Before being diagnosed, I was in bed most of the day due to my unbelievable bone and muscle pain. I was seeing a rheumatologist, in particular for my severe spinal pain. I had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, also. Once I went gluten-free, it was an improvement!! It took me a few months to "heal" and not have the everday pain. Now, I am ok. If I eat... -

ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
happygirl replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Deb-I swear, we must have the same grandma We leave notes on the bedroom/bathroom doors upstairs because she gets confused as to which room is which. And yet, she still tries to open a locked, bedroom door when she is looking for the bathroom. Two Christmas seasons ago, my husband couldn't make the trip up to my parents in PA (we were in AL) due to... -
ARCHIVED Need Applebee's Info By Lunch Time
happygirl replied to michaunj's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I used to work as a waitress at Applebee's during summers in college. Their chicken breasts that they use in many dishes are already marinated. They have soy sauce in the marinade. They do have PLAIN chicken breasts available. You specifically have to ask for them though. I don't know about their salad dressings-plus, Applebee's are franchised and you... -
ARCHIVED New York Pizza Restaurant
happygirl replied to watkinson's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Jkmunchkin and some others on this site actually go there regularly! I have heard that it is a great place! -
happy to hear you are having a better day! I was on anti-depressants for about five years-this is my first winter without meds. Can be tough! I hope that you are able to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Try to get as much (as possible!!) sleep .... being sleep deprived always seemed to 'increase' my depression.

ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
happygirl replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Patti-Yes, she certainly is! We love her dearly. And that's why we feel bad, but the situation is just tooo funny not to laugh. In the less-than-48 hours that Eric and I were home for Christmas (and she came halfway through our visit), we probably had this conversation 10+ times. Sometimes multiple times in the same sitting. Needless to say, my poor husband... -
ARCHIVED New Here -diet Question
happygirl replied to SusanRachel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Susan-As there is no 'standard' symptoms for people with Celiac-some are overweight before diagnoses and going gluten free helps them shed extra pounds. Others, like myself, had lost weight (usually, the losing weight is what you hear more of in the media and common literature) because I was so sick. Once I went on the gluten-free diet, I evened out again... -
ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
happygirl replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My sweet 90 year old grandmother (who has some trouble connecting the dots, needless to say!) cannot grasp at all the concept....we just tell her its a wheat allergy. But she can't grasp that either. You should hear some of the conversations that go on in our house when she comes to visit. Sometimes you have to get up and leave the room bc you are laughing... -
Open Original Shared Link I thought this was an interesting article---thought of you when I read it. How are you doing?
-
Does anyone know what the 'safe' level translates to in real terms, by the way! I know that I, and many others, get sick at a very low level. I see no need to put any amount of gluten into my body if possible. I don't think that anyone's responses on here are scare tactics. I know that when I get accidentally glutened (by say, taking off a bun), I...

ARCHIVED What If I Took The Bread Off?
happygirl replied to Kim UPST NY's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
ditto to nini! even little bread crumbs "count" as gluten! Order without the bun (and, clean gloves!) -
ARCHIVED New Here -diet Question
happygirl replied to SusanRachel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh, girl, we have all eaten some CRAPPY foods! My husband still laughs over some of my creations. But, we have found some brands that we like: Tinkyada gluten-free pastas. Many health food stores and some higher-end grocery stores carry them. Also, you can order online. I use it like regular pasta-make pasta salads, spaghetti, mac and cheese, etc. I... -

ARCHIVED New Here -diet Question
happygirl replied to SusanRachel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are many gluten-free flour mixes-both pre-packaged and ones you can make yourself. There are also brownie mixes, pastas, etc. I think you will find if you came to our house for dinner, we have very 'normal' dinners. -
ARCHIVED Italian Restaurants
happygirl replied to NYCisTHEplaceTObe's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I just ate at a little italian place up in williamsburg-ordered scallops, shrimp, and fish in old bay, butter, white wine....delicious! -
I am a bit concerned about some of the information posted here. Although people may not have a reaction to hamburgers with buns taken off or eating foods that have touched wheat/bread, gluten is still potentially (and probably) being ingested. From my understanding, it does not necessarily matter if our outward symptoms show that we have been glutened....
