  1. https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-57106613694.c7 This is a write up about vinegar being safe. Patti, as always, is correct in telling you which vinegars are safe. According to the FDA, if it says "Vinegar" then it means "apple cider vinegar" .... so, something unsafe, like malt vinegar, will be clearly labeled.
  2. Hey Bev, I am definitely going to consider going to Baltimore for the "big weekend"..... even if I can only make it for just Friday or just Saturday. Let me know if you are interested!
  3. MrsNJ-wow, that must be tough on your friend's mom. I can symphathize with not knowing what is going on and getting sicker and sicker. Couple thoughts ran through my mind....if there is something else going on, I have no idea what it could be. A parasite or bacteria? What about something like Crohn's or ulcerative colitis? An allergy? Has she had...
  4. I have gone to a few weddings since being diagnosed and I let the bride/groom know (phone call) that I will be attending but that they don't need to include me in a meal. For me, it is too big of a risk-I don't trust others because I am so sensitive to gluten. I eat before and then just snack a little bit-fruit, cheese, etc. I am going to be in a wedding...
  5. girl, you are not the only one who cries over this. I cry way too often, usually after being "glutened" at a gluten free restaurant. Go figure. I don't have a whole lot of advice, just to let you know that we really are all in this big Celiac boat together. Complete with lots of bathrooms. I'll be thinking of you!
  6. Feel free to disregard this since I don't have children yet As there is a high rate of Celiac running in families, I plan to have my future children tested early on, including gene tests (this way I can know if I have to worry or not). Having no symptoms does not mean that people do not have Celiac ... I think the current estimation is that 70% of...
  7. I am going to admit, guiltily, that if my symptoms weren't as severe as they are, that I would definitely not be as careful as I am now, so I understand where you are coming from, Radman. It took getting the majority of gluten out of my diet (majority = all bits of gluten except for cross contamination). Once I was "almost" healthy, I could pinpoint my...
  8. aw, my heart can sympathize with all of you! it is a hard question to answer as I get the whole range of symptoms...from brain fog to severe arthritic type pain to fatigue. In terms of just the flat out worst...it definitely has to be the "D." Ate at Outback this past week with friends of my parents that I haven't seen in a few years....ended up in the...
  9. Guhlia- you said that "you know that several wine companies use a sealing compound for their barrels that contain gluten"---can you please specify?
  10. Just a couple thoughts: I would recommend reading "Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic" by Dr. Peter Green of Columbia University. Came out this spring. Great book and gives great insight to celiac disease. Something that I find fascinating is that 70% of Celiacs (whether they are diagnosed or undiagnosed) are "silent Celiacs"....i.e., no symptoms....
  11. Those are the "main" two in the US. I have been to 2 ELCA churches since diagnosis (home church and new church) and 1 Missouri Synod church (grandma's....and we aren't technically supposed to commune there bc we aren't Missouri Synod but they let us) and all of them have been wonderful! Makes me feel very blessed!
  12. cgilsing--what "type" of Lutheran are you? I am Lutheran also....my family is ELCA but we also have Missouri Synod in our extended family.
  13. Others on the board know much more about this, but what I know is summed up in this: In many Protestant churches, you can take lots of other things (I have used corn chips, rice wafers, and gluten-free bread). In the Catholic church, the wafer/bread is REQUIRED to have gluten in it. There are "low-gluten" options but none are gluten-free. I'm sure...
  14. by overseas, I mean Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, or one of the other places where we have base camps and would be living among the military or out in "unsafe" places. we have people forward-deployed and it would be near impossible to send me there. and I'm ok with that. I asked a retired Air Force Colonel (retired 2 years ago) what would happen if someone...
  15. I work for a defense contractor, and I could not be sent overseas because they could not feed me. Darn. (at least that is the way now.....if a pill comes out and I wanted to go, that would be a different story)
  16. Nini-I made the cheese sticks the other night and they were AMAZING. definitely made my night. Before all the "big" chains came out with them, there was a chain that sold them (and still does) called Gumby's. Many are in college towns (like PSU!). I cannot tell you how much money I spent on those, esp late nights after going out! Pokey sticks are the...
  17. The brands that I see in the grocery stores all have wheat in them. I have yet to find one .... but that doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't out there! Maybe someone on here can help. The more upscale grocery store that I go sometimes makes their own sushi (always looks really good) and it has wheat in it.
  18. it is also important to be careful about sushi---the imitation crab meat almost always has wheat in it!
  19. I have eaten them pretty regularly (usually their mexican ones...enchilada) and have yet to get sick from them (knock on wood). I hope you get some good answers, girl!
  20. jscorn-congrats on your pregnancy! just so you know, if taken gluten out of your diet, had your blood tested, and had a negative test, there would be a higher chance that you had a false negative. That you had taken out gluten for a week, and still had a positive, says to me that you have Celiac (or a gluten intolerance). Bloodwork indicates that you are...

  22. DarcyandMike- I don't think there really is any "official" treatment for accidental glutenings. Unfortunately, cross-contamination is a BIG risk when eating out. Although the ingredients might be safe, the use of a utensil with gluten on it, or gloves that have gluten on it, is fairly likely. I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. I was "glutened...
  23. I take the same as StrongerToday does....been on it for 4+ years and haven't had any probs with it. Hope you find something that works for you!
  24. I am trying to remember what is in the yummy sauce that they make for you (gluten free) at PF Chang's. I think it has soy sauce, rice vinegar, chili paste, spicy mustard? Any help is appreciated
  25. de caps-You are correct---that many people have the Celiac genes but do not develop/get/have Celiac. However, the risks ARE increased for family members of Celiacs. I believe the risk is 1 in 22 of first degree family members.
