  1. I was diagnosed without a biopsy.....had positive blood work. My dumb dr told me to go on the gluten-free diet before my biopsy....so amazingly enough, I had healed and they didn't see any blunted villi. But, I still have the Celiac diagnosis.
  2. You are right-malt is bad, but maltodextrin is safe (seems like it should be bad though!) modified food starch is bad simply because it doesn't tell us what the source is. It very well could be safe. I don't risk it. Modified corn starch is safe. lunchmeats can have wheat starch in them as fillers .....i have found it twice---both in roast beef....
  3. hungry-do you have the name of all the tests? I think there are five total.....Let me know if you need them.
  4. come armed with information-TELL them you want the celiac blood panel run. Come with the names of the tests. otherwise, they might give you the run around!
  5. amzippity----some Celiacs are lactose intolerant until they are healed. Once they are healed, they can tolerate lactose. The intestinal villi have the enzyme "lactase" on the tips, which helps digest lactose. When the villi are damaged, the lactase enzyme suffers also. (I learned that on this board). So some people are lactose/casein intolerant, and others...
  6. Some of the swanson broths are gluten free-I buy them at the regular grocery store!
  7. I keep it pretty simple-I just use one of my gluten free flour mixes as a substitute pretty much whenever I need it.
  8. Thanks for all the info on probiotics and I am one of the many women who eat yogurt whenever they take antibiotics!!!! It is a great preventitive measure.
  9. I second the immodium....it has saved me many a times! hope you survive-let us know!
  10. I have never heard it not to be safe.
  11. another little tidbit that you might already know....if it is dh/celiac, the problem is gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley, malt, and oats. so something that is wheat free does not necessarily mean it is gluten free! gluten can also be hidden in many places (soy sauces, modified food starch, etc) good luck, we are all rooting for you!
  12. celiacruz-thank you so much! I would really appreciate any help. I think I am going to entirely have to cut out eating out (yes, I am crying over this thought). But, I think probiotics might be able to help with healing.
  13. blueeyedmanda-My mom went to that class also! (I am the Celiac, not her, and she is in Mechanicsburg) She couldn't stay for all of it but said she thought it was great! She also went to one shortly after it opened-it was a 3 part class, I think. My mom, Linda, sat next to another Linda, who apparently is the president of the local support group and thought...
  14. has your child been tested for Celiac? Or only allergies? If he has Celiac, a wheat allergy test will come back negative.
  15. one note---you might want to see a GI instead of an allergist as Celiac and DH is an autoimmune disorder, not an allergy. I'm sure there are others on here who can offer more advice. good luck!
  16. I am thinking about taking a probiotic and would be interested to know what type you take, who makes it, and what it is supposed to do. I am becoming micro-sensitive....have been glutened at every "gluten-free" place there is (and I barely eat out). I feel like I need some extra help because of the accidental glutenings. I'm really frustrated right now...
  17. for whatever reason, i cannot tolerate their fries anymore....they are my #1 'no-no'
  18. Corn pastas are what I tried first...... I must say, I thought it was yucky! (no offense) Tinkyada tastes very similar to "regular" pasta-and I am a picky gluten free person.
  19. haha, we Celiacs live in such a strange little bubble, don't we! welcome to the board!
  20. I had a crappy meeting with a dietician that cost me like $35 out of my own pocket. After having been a diagnosed Celiac for 3 weeks, I knew more than she did. I should have never paid, honestly. Hope that your dietician/nutritionist is worth the $$!
  21. You are an inspiration and give hope to the rest of us! Congrats girl!
  22. No VA, USA
  23. Just so you know, there was a two page article about Celiac Disease in Time Magazine in July 2004. I don't have the name of the author off-hand. The reason I know this is it is the reason I was diagnosed, thanks to my mom reading it
  24. If I'm hungry, I'll have bring along fruit in the morning to work, or some cheese. lunch is often leftovers, or amy's frozen foods, or soup, or lunchmeat roll-ups (safe ham or turkey, with mayo and cheese, or ham/turkey with cream cheese). lots of time, i'll bring rice just to fill me up. I'll bring chips or popcorn. Usually have some chocolate also...
  25. I use a bunch of the Dove hair products-love them!
