ARCHIVED First Day Of Summer ... And It Won't Stop Raining - Vent
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It hasn't rained for 1 hour now... knock on wood! I don't think we have had crazy amounts of rain, it's probably close to a foot over a week, but Calgary isn't meant to handle that much moisture. We are usually pretty dry. Combine that rain with a late spring run-off... We end up with downtown under water. I've even heard that the Saddledome (where... -
ARCHIVED Relief With Hearing Celiac Disease***
nvsmom replied to DebVendz's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome. There are lots of good celiac books and gluten-free cookbooks. I would raid your local library. I personally liked Greens' book The Silent Epidemic (I think). Just avoid books by celebrities. -
ARCHIVED First Day Of Summer ... And It Won't Stop Raining - Vent
nvsmom posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Ugh. My city is shut down due to flooding. Downtown Calgary is under water and over 100 000 people have been evacuated in our city nevermind the surrounding towns. My FIL's house is under water, my cousin is evacuated, and we have multiple family friends whose homes are in danger in Calgary, Bragg Creek and Cochrane (by Banff). My hubby just drove out to... -

ARCHIVED Even More Confused After Gi Appt!?
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
i believe, in your daughter's other lab work that you posted in another thread, there was an Iga and she was below normal in it... I think. If that is the case, it makes her tTG IgG test that much more accurate. Her doctor sounds like one who likes a LOT of evidence before he diagnoses so he exaggerated the 50/50 cahnces. that's not right as far as... -
ARCHIVED Is Celiac The Same As Candidiasis?
nvsmom replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You might want to check the dh boards on this forum. celiac disease can manifest as a horribly itchy rash. Perhaps they can help. -
ARCHIVED Can I Trust My Doctors? Some Help And Advice Please!
nvsmom replied to Ikgbrd's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. Your symptoms are pretty common to celiac disease. With a positive DGP IgA and a positive response to the diet, I would say that a celiac disease diagnosis s a lock. The DGP IgA is a pretty reliable test. On pages 11-12 of the following report, it discusses the specificity of each test (how likely a positive result is caused by... -
ARCHIVED At Home Test?!?
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The Biocard test look at IgA levels (a control) and tTG IgA, but even in lab situations the tTG IgA misses up to 25% of celiacs. I agree that it is best to go to a doctor and try to have multiple types of tests run. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Heaven And Donuts!
nvsmom replied to Adalaide's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mmmmm. Drooling. I've never made donuts before. Donut virgin. But I think today is a good day to try. Must google... What oil is best for frying donuts in? -
ARCHIVED Happy Spring, Fellow Gardeners!
nvsmom replied to notme's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It won't stop raining here either! My plants won't grow because they're so soggy. It rarely hits 70F and it's so overcast we have to turn on lights to read. Blech. The surounding towns are all flooding and even Banff is having mudslides. Mudslides! We're supposed to be semi-arid here. LOL If we go outside, it's either raining or we attacked by swarms... -
ARCHIVED Severe Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms?
nvsmom replied to designerstubble's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I too just was told that my adrenals aren't working very well. I know thyroid problems and other AI issues do a number on the adrenals and then they need a bit of help to get going again. Adrenal fatigue is just your adrenals getting worn out by (physical) stress. Addisons' is AI in nature and not curable - as I understand it. I'm being started on morning... -

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Gone gluten-free Based On High Tt Iga Alone?
nvsmom replied to mousefan71's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I went gluten-free on tTG IgA and the EMA IgA (which is a very similar test). Because your daughter's score was so positive, I would say that there is litlle doubt that it is celiac disease. If the tTG IgA has a false positive (which only occurs 1-9% of the time) the tTG is much lower - barely positive. Those false cases are always caused by something else... -
ARCHIVED Very High B Vitamin Levels--Why?!?!
nvsmom replied to brookevale's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I was diagnosed with celiac disease a year ago, I had my B12 checked and it was high. It was 896 with a normal range of 155-700. I just assumed that was good. I recently found out that it can mean a liver problem, and those aren't rare amoung recovering celiacs. My liver appears to be healthy though. I recently had my B12 levels checked again, after... -
ARCHIVED Gi Appt Today!
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would write down all questions too, and leave a few lines for yourself to write in the answers. All those lab tests she had, you might want to ask the GI what each one is and why they think it was abnormal. Perhaps ask about whether she needs any supplementary digestive enzymes for a while until she is healed. Request nutrient levels tested (D, B12, potassium... -
ARCHIVED Should I Get Tested?
nvsmom replied to NicoleMT's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It really is up to you whether you choose to test or not. If you decide to skip testing because you are feeling better gluten-free, then you can declare yourself Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitive (NCGS) and keep doing what you are doing. If you think having a doctor given diagnosis will help you stay gluten-free for life, then that could be a reason to consider... -
ARCHIVED Awww Man! :/
nvsmom replied to mommy2krj's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
bummer! Stock up on popsicles for the strep, and for after the biopsy. -
I guess that it is possible that this is celiac related but I was diagnosed a year ago and have been gluten-free ever since - 1 month less than you. I doubt it is celiac related... well, I hope it's not celiac related. after being gluten-free for one year, I should be done getting new symptoms.... i really want to say that with a pout and a foot stomp....

ARCHIVED Test Results! Need Help Understanding
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah!!! -
Welcome to the board. How long should I try a gluten free diet if I have NO GI symptoms, but do have undiagnosed neurological symptoms? From what I have observed, it is usually the GI symptoms and headaches which improve the soonest. Some symptoms can really linger. I have some cognitive issues (memory is poor, I lose words) which still has not improved...

ARCHIVED Ttg Iga Still Positive After 1 Year
nvsmom posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I tested positive for celiac disease a year ago, although I think it's been with me for my entire life. I was diagnosed with blood tests back in June of 2012: tTG IgA was >200 ref. range was 0-20 EMA IgA was 1:40 (ref. range not given) I did not opt for a biopsy as those two tests, and my symptoms, was enough for me to go gluten-free. I've... -
ARCHIVED Test Results! Need Help Understanding
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Both tTG tests will test for intestinal damage, and if positive, they most likely indicate celiac disease. The IgG and IgA tests are Immunoglubulin tests. These are not celiac tests but measures of the immune responses (antibodies) in various areas throughout the body. The IgA is at work in the intestines, so that is why IgA based tests are often used... -
ARCHIVED Test Results! Need Help Understanding
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
(((hugs))) to you mom. She had a positive tTG IgG right? I'm assuming that was on a different lab panel. I know a bit about these tests, but I wouldn't trust my knowledge on all these tests. TSH - A high TSH means her pituitary thinks her thyroid isn't making enough hormones. She most likely is hypothyroid. I know that I do not feel well at 3... -
ARCHIVED Ttg Igg
nvsmom replied to kpw31's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's happened to a few of our board members that I know of. That's why they run both versions of the tests - some tests work better for some than others. There are not many people around here who are positive in all of their tests, and the few who are (like me) often did not have a full celiac panel done (mine was just the tTG IgA and EMA IgA which are... -
ARCHIVED Nerve Pain In First Few Months Of Recovery?
nvsmom replied to ruthie-ray's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Could it be a bulging disc and sciatic pain? I had a lot of sciatic pain for years until a disc finally burst and pinched off a nerve. The pain, and now numbness, started in my big toe, over the top of my foot, to my shin and then up the side of my thigh and into my buttocks. If it is something like that, you might want to get it checked so you don't end...
