  1. Green's beer is pretty good. It's a bit like a home brew... a bit hoppy. Open Original Shared Link Be careful with the gluten-free beers, some are made with barley but then they "supposedly" remove the gluten somehow. I had an Estrella daura beer, which was good, but I didn't read the whole label - I stopped at gluten-free to 3ppm. I had a really strong...
  2. That's great you are letting everyone know. It can really spread out through a family. On my dad's side, his maternal aunt and one of my cousin's kids has celiac disease, but I suspect another cousin. On my mom's side, I have a first cousin with it, and a couple of more that I suspect. I think if everyone was tested there would be a couple of more cases.
  3. Not really, but you will need to let you doctor know that celiac disease is suspected so you can keep an eye on all the other health issues that can go along with it like osteopenia, thyroid issues and propensity to get other autoimmune disorders (like diabetes), lactose intolerance and possible leaky gut issues, and nutritional deficienies like potassium...
  4. Hmm, because the doctor did not order the "too specialized" total serum IgA, the AGA IgA, tTG IgA, and reticulin IgA could be invalid if you are IgA deficient; it's unlikely that you are one of the 1/20 celiacs who is deficient but it is possible. The AGA IgG has a really weak sensitivity of 17-100%, that means the test misses up to 83% of celiacs it tests...
  5. Welcome to the board. I hope you keep feeling better. The menatal absorption starts to go away with time. i know that celiac disease was all I thought about at first. It gets easier. I have a new Vitamix too. I LOVE that thing. I can make veggie/fruit smoothies that my second son (pickiest eater in the world- I swear he only eats beige food) will...
  6. I would send food too. gluten-free chips/nachos, maybe some fruit, some muffins for the next morning... I find that as long as I send enough food for everyone, no one cares if me or my kids is not eating everything else.
  7. Wow. i'm glad that you know! If you have to do a gluten challenge, I hope it's not too hard on you.
  8. Those numbers looked alarming but I started checking us against the norm: Where is says 56% of celiacs have poor vitamin status... well, somewhere between 40-75% of people are deficient in vit D, that would put as at about typical. It says we have 72% increased chance of death in the first year if we have intestinal inflammation. A healthy middle...
  9. There are a few board members who had negative blood tests and a positive biopsy - that means it is celiac. For whatever reason, there was not enough autoantibodies in your blood to show up on the test, but you have the intestinal damage (which is what the tTG's EMA, and DGP's all test for). Early cases of celiac disease often are serologically negative...
  10. It is possible that your period of being gluten-free could have caused a false negative in your results. Some people's blood work goes back to normal fairly quickly whereas in others in can take years. Also, many doctors will just run a tTG IgA and the total serum IgA control test, that tTG test has a sensitivity of 75-95% which means it can miss 5-25% of...
  11. I did a Biocard home test a year ago. I'm one of those who (previously) avoided doctors so I appreciated being able to test at home. I did go to the doctor to confirm my results. The Biocard test tests for above normal tTG IgA and normal levels of total serum IgA (control test). It looks like a pregnancy stick. the first window's line shows adequate levels...
  12. Is it possible that normal baked goods were actually slowing his digestion down? I'm one who had issues with C my entire life and I thought my C was normal. When my BM's normalized, I thought I was getting D... Could he have a gluten sensitivity? Just a thought.
  13. I've read in many books and articles that L-glutamine is helpful in cell renewel and protecting the mucosal layer of the gut. It definitely helps me with muscle repair as I do not get nearly a sore as I wouldhave after a workout when not taking it. I have to disagree. 14. I doubt I'd shave it - I would look too much like my brother. LOL I have been gluten-free for a year now. I had a couple of cc issues in the first month or so, and then in January and Februray I glutened myself a few times with fries that had wheat starch on them when I got lazy reading labels. Otherwise I have been gluten-free a year. My hair...
  15. Welcome. Good for you for figuring out your gluten intolerance! Not many do. I agree that you might as well get tested ASAP. Your antibody levels still might be high enough to register. Plus, when people go paleo without focusing on going gluten-free, gluten sometimes sneaks in in small places like soy sauce, spices, worchestershire sauce, or other...
  16. During weeks 2 and 3 of becoming gluten-free, I hit a withdrawal and that migraine was one I remember one year later. It lasted a good week and it hurt just to blink. I remember being incredibly fatigued and my mood was horrible... wasn't fun. Your preesent symptoms sound like withdrawal to me. I'm guessing that if you stay gluten-free, it will pass soon...
  17. I think it's probably just due to changes in the body and everyday living. I've had TSH tests that have halved in a matter of weeks for no apparent reason... like your daughter, it was still a positive test. That's just my guess. I hope you daughter feels better soon and doesn't experience any withdrawal going gluten-free. Best wishes.
  18. L-Gluitamine is thought to help with intestinal healing early on.
  19. Ah, I thought the little cuties in your avatar were your kids... if they are grandkids, they should be tested too. Chances are evryone is fine but it's good to check it out. Good luck with your appointment.
  20. Fenugreek seed helps with milk production and it makes you smell like maple syrup. Massaging out the milk while you bf can help too. I found it really helped get out the hind milk. Best wishes.
  21. Thyroid disease is in over 10% of celiacs. If you want that checked request: TSH - should be near a 1 ore you could be subclinical - and need treatment Free T4 and Free T3 - should be in the 50-75% of your lab's normal reference range TPO Ab - should be pretty low Some like to get bone density checked too but it's usually not needed. I can't remember...
  22. I agree with Nora, the DGP is known to be a superior test for celiac disease in children. It would be a good one to request. This is a report on celiac disease. On page 12 it discusses how sensitive the tests are (menaing how likely they are to catch cases of celiac disease). The TTg IgA misses 5-25% of all cases of celiac disease. Open Original Shared...
  23. Yes. The IgA is probably the "total serum IgA" which is just a control test (not a celiac test) to ensure that she produced enough IgA for the actual celiac tests that use IgA (tTG IgA, EMA IgA DGP IgA) are accurate. The test IgA levels because about 5% of celiacs are deficient in IgA and would thus have false negative tests. If the range of her test...
  24. If you want to be tested for celiac disease you must be eating gluten daily (ie. 2-4 slices of bread per day) in the weeks prior to testing. You should (unfortunately) resume eating gluten immediately. i too lost a bunch of weight when I first went gluten-free too. I thought it was my inflammation going down. If you are concerned, monitor your diet more...
  25. I had hair regrowth when I went gluten-free and I'm assuming it was because I was gluten-free and not due to my hypothyroidism. Oddly enough, I was not deficient in any vitamins, although I was on the lower end of normal for D and I now know my zinc is a bit low. I think my celiac hair loss was possibly due to the state of inflammation that celiac disease...
