ARCHIVED Is This Normal?
nvsmom replied to downtownjodiebrown's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My first thougt was that it could be dairy. My gastro symptoms were almost the same for dairy as they were for gluten. I have read that up to 50% of celiacs are lactose intolerant at diagnosis (this often disappears over time) so you could be one of the unlucky few who needs to drop dairy for a time. I would recheck everything in your life for gluten... -

ARCHIVED Hypocholesterolemia - A.k.a. Really Low Cholesterol
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The old cholesterol - heart/stroke link isn't as strongly supported as it used to be. yes, high cholesterol is often seen in patients with heart problems but inflammation (from too much processed foods or sugars, and AI diseases) are now thought to play a larger role. We need cholesterol to function. Really low cholesterol isn't a good thing, although... -
ARCHIVED Do You Think A Person Can "recover" From Gluten Intolerance?
nvsmom replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am almost certain that I have had celiac disease my entire life but my GI symptoms came and went - during my teens and late twenties I did not often get the stomach aches and bloating that I had in childhood, early twenties and my thirties. The problem was that my other symptoms grew worse: hair loss, pain, migraines, joint issues, fatigue... those all... -
ARCHIVED My Only Celiac Friend Started Eating Gluten Again, And I Feel Alone.
nvsmom replied to rorenchan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ah geez. I too hope your friend comes around sooner rather than later - before she gets too sick. What popped into my head reading this post was if your friend was still hanging around you? I can imagine that she knows she is not acting smart and may try to avoid you so she is not reminded of what she should be doing. She might be a bit ashamed...KWIM... -
ARCHIVED Difficulty With Holding Eye Contact
nvsmom replied to powerofpositivethinking's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My oldest son, who tested serologically negatiove for celiac, had great improvements in this area. We suspect he has mild aspergers but did not pursue a diagnosis as it wouldn't change anything in his life. Improvements became even greater when he removed dairy from his life as well. -
ARCHIVED My Story Of Hairloss....need Advice
nvsmom replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to to boards. As you correctly said, celiac disease can cause hair loss, but so can many other (autoimmune) issues - hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's is one of the worst for that). Low nutrients and migraines are also linked to gluten intolerance and celiac disease. It is definitely something to consider. You are correct that in order to have... -
ARCHIVED First Steps?
nvsmom replied to MimiK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome, Mimi. The tests Marcus lasted are good ones. There is also the EMA IgA, tTG IgG, and the older AGA IgA andAGA IgG. As Scarletgrrrl said, you will need to stay on gluten until testing is done. You could also request the endoscopic biopsy. That procedure sometimes catches serologically negative cases of celiac disease. If everything comes out... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge
nvsmom replied to Scarletgrrrl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. I wish you luck with your gluten challenge, I hope it isn't too difficult for you. After your 7 weeks on gluten, I think you should have the celiac panel run again. You probably won't get another chance for an accurate blood test again. The full panel is: TTG IgA and tTG IgG DGP IgG and DGP IgA EMA IgA Total serum IgA ... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Interpret Test Results?
nvsmom replied to OmgTaylor's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As I understand it, the IgA is just once aspect of your immune function. IgG, IgM, and IgE are further parts. I do not believe a low IgA is usually cause for concern. Try not to let your negative tests discourage you from figuring out what is wrong. Because you are low in IgA, you have not yet had any tests that can tell you if you ave celiac or not.... -
Ugh. I still haven't seen this yet!! And I am a true Trekkie. I have been to Vulcan (Alberta ) for the Star Trek festival back in the early 90's... I even own pointy ears. Don't spoil it... tell me no more. I know my V-ger and Khan - I'm going this weekend!

ARCHIVED Mushroom (Neroli) Memorial Thread
nvsmom replied to Scott Adams's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I was wondering if anyone (mods?) has Neroli's address and would be willing to pm it to me? I'd like to send her husband a card with a short note telling him how she helped me and my family with our health issues and what a difference she made in our lives... even from so far away. -
ARCHIVED Desperate For Answers Feeling Worse Almost One Month Later
nvsmom replied to rene83's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
(hugs) You definitely got the short end of the stick when it comes to withdrawal.... a month is a long time. My withdrawal lasted over 2 weeks. I think at 3 weeks it was starting to lighten up a bit. The migraine lasted 10 days, non stop... I still remember that one - it was a doozey. The fatigue goes with it all. I remember feeling like my get up and... -
ARCHIVED The New Celiac Drug Is Out There
nvsmom replied to gatita's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm lucky, I don't miss bread at all. I had braces for a couple of years during my teens, and as a self conscious girl, I could NOT stand getting bread stuck in my train tracks. Ick. LOL I switched away from most breads at that point... I guess my dentist did me a favour, eh? -
ARCHIVED Recently Diagnosed, Completely New To This :(
nvsmom replied to kellyc143's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the board. The first few months are by far the most difficult. I had a printout of ingredients that I couldn't eat that I would carry with me shopping. Labeling laws (In Canada) have become better over the past year so it is getting much easier - it's just label reading that you need to get used to. Hang in there the first few weeks. Some... -
ARCHIVED Disappointing Endo Results
nvsmom replied to nosy parker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
NCGI/NCGS is awful. I personally think it can be worse for people because all of the symptoms are the same, there are nutritional deficiencies and inflammation (I personally think the latter can cause the former), pain, fatigue and hair loss... all with no clear cut way to diagnose it. Awful! Celiac disease is pretty much the same thing with some autoimmune... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Interpret Test Results?
nvsmom replied to OmgTaylor's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's a pretty common partial celiac panel that many doctors run, that's what they ran on me too. As Marcus said though, it is not the complete panel. There is also: deaminated gliadin peptides (DMG IgG and DGP IgA) anti-tissue transglutiminase (tTG IgG - you had tTG IgA done) So far, your celiac tests are negative. It is possible to have some negative... -
ARCHIVED Probiotic To Help Digestion Of Raw Veggies And Fruit?

Eat kale and grow a ne thyroid - that's sci-fi stuff. LOL Good article. Thanks. Jar reading... I can do that! Thanks. LOL Normal?! Right on! LOL I never thought of being normal... that's disturbing right there. LOL -
ARCHIVED Low Iga
nvsmom replied to Delphyne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh yeah... you are way too far below the normal IgA levels for an accurate test using IgA. About 5% of celiacs (which is higher than the regular population) are deficient in IgA - it's why they check your Iga levels...And good thing they did for you! DGP IgG is one of the most specific and sensitive tests out there now a days, tTg IgG is not too bad.... -
ARCHIVED Low Iga
nvsmom replied to Delphyne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. Did you get the range of your IgA (total serum IgA I assume)? If you are low in IgA, which you would be for some labs (ranges can REALLY vary though), then the other tests would be invalid - IgA is a control test. If your IgA is below the normal range, you will need to repeat your celiac tests but with the IgG versions (tTG IgG... -
ARCHIVED Probiotic To Help Digestion Of Raw Veggies And Fruit?
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
VeggieGal - thanks for the idea. Kale is considered a goitrogenic food, meaning that it can make it harder for your thyroid to function and in response, your thyroid might grow bigger and result in a goiter. I am hypothyroid, and generally avoid a majority of the goitrogenic foods but I forgot about kale... I'll be careful not to eat too much of it. As... -
ARCHIVED Mushroom (Neroli) Memorial Thread
nvsmom replied to Scott Adams's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I didn't realize until today. I was wondering where she was... She was lovely and helped me a bunch too. One I regretted would only remain a penpal. What a loss for everyone who has known her. Best wishes to her family. -
ARCHIVED Should I Have An Endoscopy?
nvsmom replied to nickadooski's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My doctor asked if I wanted a biopsy and I said no. I aready knew that my intestine was damaged because of my high test scores, and because I have had symptoms my entire life. I did not want to risk sedation so the doctors' could rank my damage, or miss the damage and confuse my diagnosis. If there was something else wrong in there, I figured they could check...- 8 replies

ARCHIVED Probiotic To Help Digestion Of Raw Veggies And Fruit?
nvsmom posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have started making green smoothies for myself almost daily, but there are times when I get bloated from all that vegetable. My typical smoothie is a cup or two of greens (spinach, kale, chard, etc), a couple small cucs, a pear, hemp hearts/seeds, bee pollen, a carrot, and some raspberries or grapes with water. I have not been eating a lot of greens in...
