  1. I'm a German and Ukranian/Russian mix and I have celiac disease on both sides of the family. My hubby has a British/Scottosh/Irish background and he's fine... there's some irony in there somewhere.
  2. Thanks. LOL He got his new pack of gum so now he is happy.
  3. Wonky..... I think I've heard that medical term before! I know what you mean, Lisa. This is why doctors (or least a couple of mine) tell us that we read too much - we freak ourselves out. On the other hand, if it is something, then my orthomolecular doc who ordered that test didn't catch it so it could be good I'm looking into it. Thanks for the support...
  4. I apologize. I did not mean to sound critical of you. We are here to help and support each other and I try to do that when I can. I did mean to criticize your doctor though. It is difficult to go overboard with the gluten-free diet. It is much much more common for people to not cut gluten completely and then continue to suffer. Hidden sources of gluten can...
  5. Did they just check the TSH? That's not enough unless you are one of the thyroiditis patients who gets a super high TSH, that's only about half of them. It took 15 years for my docs to agree that my hypo symptoms were caused by hypothyroidism. I wish I had not blindly followed my doctors as I lost many years of good health. Ideally, thyroid labs should...
  6. I have found that low IGF1 and growth hormone (GH) are found in some celiacs and will help cause short stature in children. It is not common but enough to be noted... I have the opposite problem of rather high IGF-1 (which is caused by high GH levels). Interestingly, high IGF-1 often causes hypertension, but celiac can cause hypotension... Mine is borderline...
  7. Welcome to the board. With a negative blood test (was it just one test or did he run all - tTG's, DGP's, AGA's, and EMA?) and negative biopsy, I agree that chances are that you do not have celiac. You do have symptoms though so that could mean that you have Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) which is much more common, and has all the same symptoms of...
  8. So you mean that he has intestinal inflammation but not enough damage to all it celiac disease? The doc said to go gluten-free but cutting out the obvious gluten but not to go overboard? Your doctor sounds uneducated in celiac disease! Did he do the blood tests or discuss NCGS with you? Tiny, almost invisible amounts of gluten can hurt him. if he needs...
  9. I would imagine the gluten-free diet is next - did the doctor say to go gluten-free now?
  10. I'm sorry he has celiac disease but so glad you found out at such a young age.
  11. Yes, i'm in Calgary but i'm up on a hill in an unaffected area (just damp basements from rain). We have friends and family who didn't fair as well, but the clean-up is well under way. I feel bad for those in High River too. For some dumb reason, the town and military wouldn't let people back in to pump out thier houses because there was no gas or electricity...
  12. Welcome to the board. I hope you continue to feel better on the gluten-free diet. Let us know how your tests go.
  13. Thanks Lisa. . I think it looks pretty god overall too. I was pretty lucky to avoid the deficiencies that many celiacs get. I do have some blips in the tests but they'll even out eventually... Hopefully. Lol That IGF-1 is worrisome but it isn't causing obvious problems (I think) so I have some time to sort that out. My fasting glucose is close to being...
  14. Thanks for the response, funkflex. I agree that my positive tTG IgA could still be a factor of my fatigue. It can also be high due to hypothyroidism, so that could be part of it. My fatigue is a bit better than it was a year ago. It gets worse when I have an autoimmune flare-up of some sort, and I haven't had that for a few months. I'm not too worried...
  15. I have been to a new orthomolecular doctor who ran a thousand tests on me. He ran an Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1) test on me, I'm guessing to assess my pituitary function because of hypothyroidism, which came back quite high. For my age IGF-1 should be 109-284 but mine is 401. In my opinion, that's not just a little high, that's quite high. All...
  16. For most, withdrawal only lasts a week or so. I hope you are well soon. Welcome to the board.

    ARCHIVED Advice?

Welcome to the boards. I've never worked in a grocery store before, but I am not sure how you would be glutened at the checkout. I know those areas can be quite dirty but I imagine that if you wear plastic/latex gloves and then wash thouroughly once you are done, you should be fine. The only danger I can imagine is if a bag of flour "poofs" out some...
  18. Welcome to the board. I'm good at spouting off tests so...The most common celiac tests are: tTG IgA and tTG IgG DGP IgA and DGP IgG EMA IgA total serum IgA (a control test) AGA IgA and AGA IgG You must be eating gluten in the weeks priopr to testing in order to have valid results. The first three tests show damage to the villi of the intestine, and the...
  19. I never did a biopsy so I have no personal experience there... I just wanted to send her my best wishes. I hope she is feeling better as the day goes on.
  20. P of P gave you great links and info. i agree with everything. A low IgA serum would make any IgA based celiac tests (tTG IgA, EMA IgA, or DGP IgA) invalid. On of the main reasons they run IgG based tests is because up to 5% of celiacs are IgA deficient, you appear to be one of the 1/20 who is IgA deficient. The only valid celiac test you've had is the tTG...
  21. Celiac disease is not an allergy. It is an autoimmune disease that damages the villi of the small intestine as well as causing a host of GI and non-gastro symptoms. Allergies are separate part of the immune system based on Immunoglobulin E (IgE) I think. Celiac tests use IgA and IgG. Pages 11-12 of this report discusses celiac testing: Open Original Shared...
  22. Welcome to the board. In the past, I was like your family. In my childhood, I had been told by a doctor that it was normal for me to have stomach aches after most meals. We were a family who trusted doctors and had a 'suck it up' mentality. The only reason I was diagnosed is because I was looking into my son's stomach issues which were similar to mine...
  23. We have a bit of a water shortage because there is too much water, the water treatment plant is having a tough time because of all the silt and mud in the river... Luckily we don'e need to water gardens. LOL I don't believe we get Japanes beetles up here. Too cold maybe?
  24. I'd like to read that. I'll put a hold on it at the library once their IT service is up and running - the central branch is under water from the flood still so services are pretty limited.
  25. YEAH! That doctor sounds like a gem! I hope your procedure goes perfectly. Enjoy a last donut for me.
