  1. Yeah mom! I was another who had stomachaches as a kid but the adults and doctors in my life never figured it out. That's wonderful that you're helping him with this now. When I went gluten-free, my stomachaches completely stopped within two weeks. To be honest, I didn't realize how often I had stomachaches because I got used to having them. If your...
  2. I think the gluten-free buns I make my kids for lunch are healthier than whole wheat buns in the store... by far. I use a microwaveable bun recipe that I found on this board and modified: Microwave gluten-free buns 2 Tbs brown rice flour 1 Tbs golden flax meal 3/4 Tbs coconut flour (substitute 1 Tbs almond flour if wish) 1/2 tsp baking...
  3. I used the biocard home test and it gave me a faint positive, buthen the labs ran my ttg IgA, I was very positive. The home tests work but the lab run ones are probably superior and test for more things. I'm guessing they would be more likely to pick up abnormal results if you aren't eating much gluten but as I said, it's just a guess. If you want to...
  4. Sorry to hear of your diagnosis as celiac can be overwhelming at first. On the bright side, it sounds like you've caught it early so you may be able to avoid the complications that living with untreated celiac seems to produce. Plus as the others said, the diet gets easy pretty quickly. There are a lot of books on celiac since we apparently are the...
  5. For me, it's within half an hour I'll get a stomachache that lasts a couple of hours. Then I get bloating and pain with that, as well as a migraine that will last a few days. I sometimes feel a bit rundown for a week or so. Happy turkey day!
  6. I'm still pretty sensitive. I've been glutened twice by accident. Once was in a restaurant (still don't know what got me) and another was a gluten-free beer that was gluten-free to 3 parts per million. Both timesI was sure it was gluten. I have had two stomach issues that I think was not gluten related since it wasn't quite my typical reaction, although...
  7. I would look into seeing a rheumatologist for your slightly positive RF. As far as I know, that's not something that celiac disease can cause. ESR, CRP, and ANA are usally test run for connective tissue AI diseases like Lupus, MCTD, UCTD, or RA, although I know that people with those disease often end up with negative tests too. Gluten intolerance is a fairly...
  8. I doubt it was bad luck or poor timing. I think you were onto something with that elimination diet and your body reacted strongly when gluten was reintroduced. I get that big bloat when I ate gluten; I used to never go anywhere without a baggy sweatshirt or sweater so I could hide my gut when the bloat hit. For me, feeling poorly and migraines would usually...
  9. You could be in a bit of a withdrawl, some people seem to get that... I did. I felt very poorly, tired and cranky for the first two weeks. That could be contributing to your weakness. It could be lack of calories too. Perhaps a small handful of seeds or nuts about 3 hours after your last meal to help tide you over. Good luck.
  10. I too would have the kids checked if it's been a couple of years since their last test... just to be more sure. I had my kids tested, and they came back negative. I suspect my oldest and youngest might have some food issues though, so I thought it safest, and simplest, if our entire house went gluten-free. We've been moving towards being totally gluten...
  11. If your tests end up being negative, remember that celiac blood tests have a false positive rate around 25%. After all your testing is done, even if it is a negative result, you might want to give the diet a go for a few months to see if it has any effect on your health. The NW has many stores that sell gluten-free foods so it's not that hard to do; you just...
  12. HI I did the home biocard test and had a very faint positive (it tests ttg IgA); I didn't get the full amount of blood squeezed out to fill that mini-vial so that could have affected my results. Anyway, I brought my positive test to the doctor too, and he ordered the celiac panel for me. At CLS (Calgary) the panel consists of EMA, ttg IgA, and total IgA...
  13. For thanksgiving, I am using a cookie crumb crust made with gluten-free ginger snaps and butter. I hope it works... Best wishes
  14. Good luck Terry. You'll probably notice some improvements within a week or two and then other improvements will slowly show up... It does take a while. I wanted to add that I was diagnosed based on positive EMA and ttg IgA, and my symptoms. No endoscopy neede, which is great since I like to avoid procedures like that.
  15. It took me over 2 months to notice new hair growth; it was about 1-2" long. I then had some sort of atuoimmune attack and it started falling out again. I have other AI diseases that I blame for that. Has she been checked for other AI diseases? Sometimes a patient doesn't quite make the criteria for a disease so the doctor doesn't mention it.... Kind of like...
  16. Sorry to hear of your diagnosis but I;m glad you are going to be able to make yourself feel better by cutting a few foods out of your diet. It's daunting at first but it's amazing how quickly it becomes simple. I'm sure you'll do great figuring out what you can and can't eat. There are some really good books out there on it that I found helpful. I think...
  17. I occasionally get crampy when I eat some gluten-free foods; I think it's more to do with the fact that it's junk gluten-free food and highly processed than anything. It's often a good idea not to replace gluten foods slice per slice with gluten-free foods. gluten-free foods are often higher in sugars and very processed; the regular foods are actually more...
  18. Your symptoms arevery much like mine: C and stomachaches since a small girl, bloat to the point where it hurts quite a bit and you get that lovely pregnant look, fatigue, aches and pains, migraines half the time, irregular periods... Celiac dx and going gluten-free definitely helped me with most of it but I had my TSH tested, because celiacs frequently have...
  19. I think many get checked 6 months to a year after starting a gluten-free diet to ensure their bad lab numbers are going down, as well as to check vitamin levels. I plan to get rechecked after about 6 months to see if my elevated ttg IgA and EMA have gone down, and to check my vitamin levels, which were good when I started my gluten-free diet but I take a...
  20. I'm sorry you've had such a tough go. I understand your anger and frustration at losing so much of your youth to celiac. I was diagnosed at age 38, and it was only because I stumbled across some information while looking into a health complaint for my son. I took a home Biocard test (for ttg IgA) and it was positive so I took it into my doctor who...
  21. It could very well be the the synthroid... I did feel worse less than a week after starting it. Those symptoms flare up on me a few times a year though... I'll mention it to my doctor. I see him in two weeks after my 6 week lab check is done. I'm curious if that 50 mcg he has me on actually did anything. LOL I doubt he'll give me Armour because he...
  22. I too was disappointed when my fatigue didn't lift after going gluten-free and then I found out i have hashimoto's hypothyroidism so I think that is responsible for my symptoms. Did the GP test for TPOAb or just TSH? TPOAb would indicate your thyroid is under attack even if your TSH is normal or even marginally elevated. Connective tissue AI's can also...
  23. Lemonade is always gluten-free. That's wonderful you have good doctors. it's nice to know that your family is in good hands.
  24. Invictus - You've had a tough time. I hope things improve for you very soon. (hug) No sudden onset to celiac for me. No trauma or anything. It was just always there. I think I've had celiac my entire life. I remember curling up on the couch after eating with stomachaches. I asked my mom to take me to the doctor for it sometime in my early elementary...
  25. Gemini - Thanks again. Celiac causes a higher ANA too, eh? Maybe that's why mine was slower than expected... maybe my gluten-free diet is working already. Yeah, I know I'm undertreated right now but the doctor was "starting" me at 50mcg so I had the feeling he expected to adjust it. I hope he hurries it up because I'm not sickly or elderly, I think...
