  1. (hugs) I don't know much about food sensitivity testing but it sure sounds like you have a lot to deal with. I hope as you heal, you are able to reintroduce more foods into your diet. Best wishes.
  2. It is entirely possible your husband has it, but many many other autoimmune diseases can cause blood clotting problems and blood circulation problems. I know Lupus patients can get blood clots and I believe that Raynauds affects circulation too. Diabetes can cause clots... I would look through some of the other AI disorders and see if any fit better. ...
  3. There is a Biocard home test too. It only tests ttg IgA and will indicate if your total serum IgA is at adequate levels to test. It was $50 in Canada. You could always go gluten-free and look for improvements and then when you have insurance you could do a gluten challenge for a few months and retest then. Not ideal but it's an option if you can't get...
  4. Lisa gives great advice! I was going to say much of the same (although she made more suggestions than I thought of) but I was going to add my own story about the TSH. I have had hypothyroid symptoms for 15 years. My TSH was always on the high side of normal; I just did not realize how common that is in Hashimoto's patients. If the doctors had run the other...
  5. My kids tested negative but have some symptoms, and since I'm celiac, we thought the same thing as you: why not try gluten-free... it can't hurt. I hope you feel better gluten-free. With your family history, I think it's a wise choice you've made. Good luck.
  6. If I understand that statement correctly, Biocard is saying that they have a lower sensitivity levels so their test will read positive at a lower level of ttg Iga in the blood. I suppose that makes sense... you had a really low ttg Iga through Calgary labs though, didn't you? My guess is that CLS tested wrong somehow. Since they are currently being investigated...
  7. (hugs) I hear you! My first couple of weeks gluten-free were not fun. I had the shakes, a steady migraine for over a week, and I was not pleasant to be around... Not good. I let myself eat lots of gluten-free sugary snacks at first and that helped some. You just have to stick it out.
  8. I have only been gluten-free for 4 months, and I was only accidentally glutened in that first month. I didn't find my reaction to be much worse than it had been in the past when I wasnot gluten-free, but it was definitely much more noticeable than it had been. I attribute that to the fact that the inflammation and symptoms were starting from a low level...
  9. Congratulations! That is quite the recovery!!!
  10. Thanks Lady Eowyn. I think you are right on a bunch of things: I don't feel well with a TSH of 7 something. I think I have a doc who loves the TSH so getting him to treat me once I get in the accepted range (a 6) if I still have hypo symtpoms will be a challenge. I have had the TPO Ab done and I was at the very high edge of normal, free T4 was near...
  11. I'm glad the doctor is working with you. It sounds like a very positive appointmet... in spite of the gut damage... that's no good. I wanted to add that I'm one who was diagnosed as hypothyroid after finding out I had celiac. I actually had suspected a decade or so ago but the tests (TSH) kept coming back at a high normal or just above... which the...
  12. My boys all had negative tests but I suspect gluten is an issue for two of them. One son is significantly smaller than his brothers; in fact his 7 year old brother (he is 9) is now taller than him. He also has an occassional stomach ache and gets headaches. My youngest used to go to the bathroom about 8 times a day, and always during a meal; it's now just...
  13. Bummer about those high lab numbers but on the bright side, that is about as positive a blood test as you can get... at least it's a very clear positive diagnosis. I'm afraid I don't know much about the colitis either... I hope the gluten-free diet helps both conditions and you feel better soon. Best wishes and welcoe to the board.
  14. I'm not aware of that test... perhaps someone else around here can say more. I can tell you that celiac disease is an autoimmune disease and not an allergy. There are so celiacs who are allergic to wheat but it's a completely unrelated thing (as far as I know). For instance, I am a celiac but I have no known allergies but a good friend of mine (whose...
  15. I've seen it said that with more than one positive test, a patient could be considered 100% specific but I have not idea where I read that.
  16. Not really. I went to the doctor as a child and they essentially told me that that is just the way I was. I was raised with the mindset that you don't question the doctor so I never questioned it again... that and the "suck it up" attitude of my family. I finally stumbled across celiac when researching stomach and growth issues for my son, and after reading...
  17. This is my personal experience. I was an undiagnosed celiac for decades: 1- Where in the abdomen was your pain located? At the front just below the ribs. Often it encompassed my entire abdomin. It's been like that since childhood. 2- How long after a meal would the pain come? 15-30 minutes. Often during the meal. 3- Would you get pains when eating...
  18. I don't think it's that a lot of us think it's a high correlation in all population samples. I feel you could be over generalizing here... As far as I can remember, EMA is 90-95% specific to celiac (but i haven't researched it for a while since I am satisfied with my diagnosis). So I think that means that 90-95% of people with a positive EMA have celiac...
  19. 1. Can celiac's main symptom ONLY be the muscle pain (in legs), fatigue and brain fog? It can, but it's a bit less common as far as I can tell. GI symptoms seem to occur the most but those with GI symptoms often have those symptoms. I have fairly serious joint pain and muscle pain myself but I suspect it's related to hashimotos or possibly a yet undiagnosed...
  20. I'm glad the biopsy went well. As Lisa (Gottaski) said, your blood results are VERY positive for celiac. Your EMA titre is incredibly high; with that number I would be shocked if your biopsy didn't show damage. My ttg Iga was >200 and my EMA was 1:40, my doctor diagnosed me as a celiac on those results alone. I really doubt you need more tests...
  21. It took me about 2 months for my overall bloating to go away. The extreme bloat I would get following a gluteny meal stopped immediately. That being said, if I don't eat well I do get bloated; it's not extreme but I notice it. Milk products bloat me up. Deli meats get me as well. Lately i've been eating too much halloween chocolate and my tummy is...
  22. Most sufferers of autoimmune diseases have deficiencies in vitamins and minerals; D, B12, iron and calcium are commonly low in things like hypothyroidism, Lupus and others. Conversely, you can have AI diseases and have great blood work. I have celiac, ITP, and hashimotos and I have fantastic blood work, cholesterol, iron and my B12 is above the normal...
  23. I didn't have a lot of weight gain but I have had some. I think some of that is due to limited physical activity and too many sugars, some was due to celiac and some could be from hypothyroidism. When I went gluten-free I went from close to 180lbs to 165lbs without cutting calories. I'm 5'8" and have a broad build for... a broad. I look good in the low...
  24. I've quotoed that number to my doctor, and my son's doctor (his TSH was almost a 5), but they keep saying that our labs are different, ergo the different ranges, but they won't tell me how. I think they avoid American standards even if they are right... just my personal opinion though. 6-8 weeks is the accepted waiting period up here and I'm not pushing...
  25. Thanks. I'm now taking them both.
