  1. It's interesting that the only reaction you had was blisters in your mouth. I've never heard of that being a symptom of being glutened. I had a similar issue with my dentist just prior to being diagnosed with celiac disease - after a visit my mouth and cheeks were red and rashy. I'd bet that you are allergic or sensitive to latex. That's not unheard...
  2. I eat Health Valley cream of chicken soup regularly and haven't had any problems. It's organic and all ingredients are clearly listed. I usually get it at Wild Oats or Whole Foods.
  3. [Check out the gluten free chocolate chip cookies at Wild Oats. They're pretty good.
  4. I had severe DH symptoms for about two years before I was diagnosed. I've been gluten-free for about 1 1/2 years now and it's only in the last couple of months that the DH symptoms have disappeared. You are still going to have symptoms in the early stages of healing. Sorry, I can't help with the hearing loss questions.
  5. Another opinion regarding annatto - I've been gluten-free for over a year and early on I found that I could not tolerate annatto. At first, I thought I had mistakenly eaten gluten because the physical symptoms were the same. After doing some research, I found that many celiacs can not tolerate annatto, especially when they've been gluten-free for only a...
  6. My wife and I have been going to Bermuda for the last 20 years and we've stayed at the Reefs Hotel in Southampton for the last six. I was only diagnosed last April, so last year was my first visit since going on the gluten-free diet. The Reefs is a small hotel (only about 70 rooms) and the staff is terrific. We have breakfast and dinner at the hotel every...
  7. For those of you who have problems with Barbara's Honey Rice Puffins, I received the following from the company. It sounds like this is a product you may want to avoid. Thank you for taking the time to contact Barbara's Bakery about your concern with gluten allergens and our Honey Rice Puffins Cereal. At Barbara's Bakery, we take life threatening...
  8. I had my first Ricola cough drop last month after being gluten-free for about 9 months and it made me sick. I'd stay away from them.
  9. I eat a lot of Thai Kitchen products and have never had any kind of negative reaction. I'd bet on the seasoning in the veggies. The only real test is to eat each of the items separately and see if you get a reaction again. I'm in the middle of a similar issue with Barbara's Honey Rice Puffins. I've been eating them for almost a year with no problems...

    ARCHIVED Google Alerts

Considering how news-hungry everyone on this list is about new developments related to celiac disease, I thiought this would be helpful for a lot of members. I started using a new Google function a couple of weeks ago to track news and web updates relating to celiac disease, among other things. It's called Google Alerts. It's a free service that notifies...

    ARCHIVED Osteoporosis

We're definitely susceptible. I found out when I was diagnosed with celiac disease 9 months ago that I have osteoporosis, too. Since then, I've been taking multivitamins as well as calcium supplements along with Fosamax. If you're taking calcium, be sure that you take vitamin D, too, since it helps calcium get absorbed. While I'm at it, I want to...
  12. Tracy - I suffered with extremely itchy skin from head to toe and rashes before being diagnosed with celiac 9 months ago. Before I was diagnosed, I used plain aloe lotion to control the itching and found that it worked pretty well for about 12 hours at a time. Since going on the gluten-free diet, the itching subsided tremendously, however, I still have...
  13. Usually broiled scrod, but tell them you're on a gluten-free diet and that they should leave the bread crumbs off. I think last time I had steamed vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes with it. I've eaten there four or five time since I was diagnosed and I've never had a problem.
  14. I got glutened a couple of months ago in the Outback in Auburn - be careful! My daughter goes to school at Holy Cross in Worcester and we eat there a lot. 111 Chop House and the Sole Proprietor are good, but pricey. Try Brew City - it's right across the street from the 111 Chop House. It's more of a neighborhood bar/restuarant, but the food is good and...
  15. I have the same problems, though, I have to say my itching has probably decreased by about 90% since going on the gluten-free diet in April. The only things I'm using now are clobetasol, which is a topical steroid, and aloe. I only use the clobetasol if the problem is really bad. I use the aloe as kind of an all over treatment after I take a shower. ...
  16. I used to get rashes that looked like yours, mostly on my joints - elbows, knees, toes, shoulders, etc. The rashes were almost always symmetrical. Before I was confirmed with celiac disease, my dermatologist told me it was eczema and that I had hypersensitive skin. After being gluten-free for about 3 months, 95% of the rashes disappeared. I 'm 8 months...
  17. Tiffany - This was my first Thanksgiving since going gluten-free and I didn't get to have any stuffing (we ate in a restaurant - big mistake). Anyhow, can you give me a recipe for rice stuffing? My wife promised she'd give it a try next time we have turkey. I've never had risotto in a stuffing, but I love it as a dessert, cooked with chocolate and served...
  18. Thanks for replies. I've only been gluten-free for less than a year, so I hope you're right about getting less sensitive to annatto. I did see some previous posts in the archives and it certainly looks like this isn't a widespread problem among celiacs. I guess I'll just stay away from it for a while and then try it again in a year or so.
  19. I'm very careful with my diet and have had very few gluten problems, but I've found that when I eat ice cream that contains annatto I have a reaction that is exactly what happens when I eat gluten. I never have a problem with ice cream that doesn't contain gluten. I've had this happen with both Breyer's and Edy's (Edy's web site says the flavor I ate is...

    ARCHIVED Itching...

I had an itching problem from head to toe for about 18 months before being diagnosed with celiac disease. The dermatologist told me I had hyper-sensitive skin. He told me to use Benedryl, too and he gave me a couple of cortisone shots along the way. I stopped taking the Benedryl after a short while when I found that using plain aloe all over relieved the...

    ARCHIVED Restaurants

I've been gluten-free for about 5 months and have been doing really well until last night. We decided to try Outback, based on the fact that they have a gluten-free menu. The food tasted great, but an hour after eating, the problems started. Everything I ordered was from the gluten-free menu and I explained the whole gluten-free thing to the waitress....
  22. Thanks for the tip. I finally picked up the Wild Oats cookies and they are great - better than the Mi-Del's I was eating.
  23. Lisa - I had a lot of problems with grilled food, too. I only eat off my own grill now, and that was only after I completely cleaned the grates.
  24. This is pretty timely from my perspective. Prior to being diagnosed in April, I used to get sick every time we cooked on the grill. Since being diagnosed, we've been cooking my food on a separate teflon tray on the grill. That stopped me from getting sick, but it was getting complicated trying to cook food containing gluten at the same time as gluten-free...
