ARCHIVED Probiotic
Jen H replied to Ksmith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Ksmith, I've taken probiotics in the past when I"ve been on antibiotics for long periods of time. When you take antibiotics, they kill bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics help to replace your good bacteria. Some people may take them for other reasons. I'm kind of curious myself. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free/soy Free Stir Fry
Jen H replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Mmmmm.....thanks for the soy substitution recipe. I checked all the bottles in the Asian food section of the supermarket and couldn't find anything that was both gluten-free and Soy free. I love that it's a homemade sauce! I"ll let you know how it goes! -
Hi Ursula, Oops, forgot to mention vitamin D and magnesium. My supplement is a Calcium/Magnesium supplement and I get plenty of Vitamin D from all the Tropicana OJ I drink. I had my blood levels checked recently and they were all normal.

ARCHIVED How Long Can Getting "glutened" Last?
Jen H replied to chanistuff's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Chantelle, Usually abdominal pain from glutening feels better over time, not worse. Did they check your appendix when you were at the ER? That's on the right side. It would show up on the CT scan. If your pain is really severe, I'd go back and see my doctor asap. -
Hi Kim, Totally understand how you feel! I"m 28 and found out I have osteoporosis in January. I was diagnosed with celiac last August. The good news is that that diet will help repair your bones somewhat (at least that's what my endocrinologist told me). I am on calcium supplements and have been encouraged to exercise 4-5 days per week and will be reevaluated...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Birth Control Pill
Jen H replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for your input everyone! I left a message with my GYN today and she'll be calling in a new prescription. I'm not sure I'm ready for the ring yet, but thanks for sharing your experience with it, Jenvan. I think I'll try a new type of BCP first and see how it goes. -
Hi Melissa, I'm from Cape Cod and have found that Stop and Shop and Shaws have a lot of gluten-free foods. I buy bread from Whole Foods, but the closest one is in Hingham. Let us know if you have any other questions.

I also like Carl Buddig meats. They have turkey, ham, and beef. As for cheese, I eat Cabot snack cheeses. They are all gluten free and lactose free. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Birth Control Pill

I just read up on Nuvaring. Jenvan, does it help prevent cysts? Nini, do you find that you experience many side effects with your Loestrin? I've been getting alot of headaches on Ortho Tricyclen, which is why I'd like to switch. Are there less side effects with the lower dosage hormones? -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Birth Control Pill
Jen H replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks ladies. I recently started taking my pill with a small snack, before I sleep. I went off BC last year before I was diagnosed because I wanted to detox my body of all medicines (I was a mess). I believe I took Desogen before and that it worked well. Do you think I should try it again if it worked for me before? I have never heard of Nuvaring before... -

ARCHIVED Antibiotics...?
Jen H replied to Moongirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey Moongirl, You're from boston? I'm from the Cape. As for why you keep getting sick and can't shake it off, I'm not sure what to say. Hopefully your doctor will have an answer. Maybe your immune system is just down. I took probiotics (acidopholus) when I had Lyme Disease because I was on antibiotics for a month. I felt much better when I took the... -
ARCHIVED Do Many Celiacs Also Have Endometreosis?
Jen H replied to SillyYakMom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I also have endometriosis and have pretty severe pain during ovulation and my period. I found out about it after I had surgery performed on an ovarian cyst. I see a rheumatologist and she mentioned that in her own research, she's found that endometriosis is considered an autoimmune disorder and that the scientific community is trying to fully comprehend... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Birth Control Pill
Jen H replied to Jen H's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for posting gals. Not sure if I'm asking this the right way, but are there some BC pills that have a lower hormone dosage? Is that what is making me feel sick or is it my body getting used to the pill? Kariva/Mircette sounds like a good choice. Any others? -
ARCHIVED Other Food Allergies/intolerances Or Minor Glutening?
Jen H replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Cassidy, I had similar symptoms to the ones you describe when I first went on the diet. I was still feeling sick almost every day even though I was eating gluten-free food. I think it was my body's way of trying to mend. I didn't start to feel significantly better until 3-4 months into the diet. I was tested for food allergies because I was always... -

Hi everyone, I started taking Ortho Tricyclen about 2 weeks ago to help with recurrent cysts and endometriosis and I've been having a lot of headaches and nausea. Have any of you been on Ortho Tricyclen before and had to switch? Also, can you recommend a gluten-free birth control pill that you use that has been sucessful for you? Thanks for your help... -

Hi Kathleen, I am sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well. I can sympathize with how you're feeling on a much smaller scale. This is a great place to gain advice and reassurance. ARCHIVED Are Ketchup And Swedish Fish Candy gluten-free?
Jen H replied to Sandyo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ditto on Annie's Natural Ketchup. I like knowing that it says "gluten free" right on the bottle. -
I switched health care plans before my diagnosis and found that it was a good choice. As someone already mentioned, some health care insurers do NOT cover pre-existing illnesses. It may be a good idea to look around and see what certain plans offer. When we moved to Massachusetts, I went online and did some research of my own. I called the different companies...
