  1. I found out through allergy testing that I am allergic to soy. I get stomach cramps and nausea when I eat it. Once I took it out of my diet completely I began to feel better.
  2. Thanks for writing everyone. I'm not sure why I'm having a hard time with Lactaid. My only guess is that my intestines are not fully healed and that it's still difficult for me to digest. I think I'll give it a little more time before I try it again. I drank lots of milk as a child and up until I began to get celiac symptoms and have never had a problem...
  3. Hi jmengert and jaten, Did Lactaid not sit well with you at first? I had a lot of discomfort after drinking it. About 2 hours affter having the Lactaid I got stomach cramps, gas, and bloating. I have been tested for a milk allergy and I don't have one. Has it just been too soon for me to start drinking it? Thanks for your advice.

    ARCHIVED Toaster

Hi, I am taking my first vacation since being gluten-free. I'd like to take my toaster with me and stow it in my luggage. I checked the jet blue website, but it said nothing about bringing toasters on the plane. Has anyone ever traveled with one? Should I just buy one when I get to Florida?
  5. Hi everyone, I've been gluten-free for 6 months and want to reintroduce dairy into my diet. I was wondering if anyone knows whether Lactaid milk is gluten-free. Their website has no information about the gluten-free diet. Thanks.
  6. Sweet! Thanks for getting back to me on that. I can't wait to make pizza again!
  7. Hi everyone, I've been gluten-free for 6 months and would like to add dairy back into my diet. What brands of shredded cheese do you use? I'd like to use it for pizza. Also, do you know of any that are lactose free? Thanks.
  8. Hi Averyevansmom, It's a great idea to meet with a nutrionist. When I was first diagnosed I felt so alone. No one I know had ever heard of celiac disease and therefore could not help me with my diet. When you schedule the appointment make sure the nutrionist has experience with the disorder so you make the most of your time. I had a hard time with...
  9. I was nausous for a good 4 months after my diagnosis. I found out I was allergic to soy as well, and once I removed gluten and soy from my diet, I began to feel much better. When I'm really nauseous I drink flat ginger ale and it seems to help a bit.
  10. Hey Kathy1, I started taking probiotics (a.k.a. acidopholus) while I was on a month of antibiotics. In the beginning of my course of meds, I was enduring a lot of stomach pain. Once I started acidopholus, a lot of the pain went away. I take 1 caplet 2 times a day. I just followed the directions on the bottle. I found out that Whole Foods has a version...
  11. Do you guys ever get nauseous before your period? I thought I was glutening myself at the same time each month, but it's a little too coincidental.

    ARCHIVED Osteoporosis

Thanks Sue. Just curious. I'll talk to the endocrine doctor about having it performed once or twice a year. Are you on meds for osteoporosis?
  13. Hey everyone, I recenlty found out I have osteoporosis after receiving the results of my DEXA scan. I will be following up with an endocrinologist about diet and medication. I was wondering how often I should have a DEXA scan performed now that I know I have osteoporosis. Anyone else have it?
  14. Hey Slpinsd, I also had low vitamin B levels and my doctor suggested a vitamin B complex. A few of my other levels were also low--vitamin D, magnesium, and calcium. Because we have celiac disease, we haven't been absorbing nutrients properly. Have you had a bone scan done to check for osteoporsis?
  15. I'm heading to the dentist next week for my first appointment post-diagnosis. Thanks for sharing this info!
  16. I had a similar experience when I first started the gluten-free diet. After about a month my bms were more solid and I gradually began to feel better. It sounds like a good sign. Nini mentioned that she had to steer clear of dairy for 6 months. I did as well and have just begun adding it back into my diet. When I did eat/drink dairy I got a lot of bloating...
  17. Hey WGibs, I also had a hard time digesting dairy and citrus at first. I've been gluten free for 6 months now and just reintroduced orange juice recently. It did not sit well with me at all before I was diagnosed. My nutritionist told me to steer clear of OJ and dairy for 6 months until my intestine were on the mend. When you can drink OJ, I highly recommend...
  18. I found out about the book through my celiac support group and I've been waiting for it to come out. Thanks for reminding me about it! Hopefully it will be helpful.
  19. I just moved to Massachusetts from San Diego. Ahhh...I remember the warm weather. What was I thinking?
  20. I buy Rice Slices. The package says that it is gluten free, lactose free, and soy free. I get it at Shaws and at my local health food store.
  21. Are we supposed to have an endoscopy repeated after a certain period of time to see if we are healing or do we base our healing on our success with the diet? Nikki-uk, you mentioned that your husband had repeat endoscopies. Is that true in the U.S. too?
  22. Congrats on finding out the source of all your pain! You must be relieved to finally know what's going on.
  23. Hey 4Tomorrow, I have a positive ANA as well and was referred to a rheumatologist. The doctor told me that ANA tests can be positive for various reasons. It could be because of an infection you're fighting or some type of auto-immune disorder that you may have. I have various autoimmune disorders, celiac being one of them, and the doc told me that I...
  24. Hey slpinsd, Is that Le Tigra or Blue Steel you're flashing? Zoolander is one of my favorite movies. Rachel, did you doctor mention how to treat C.Difficile? Will you be put on antibiotics to treat it?
  25. Berneses, I think you bring up a really good point. Teachers have a certain amount of professional development that must be completed in order to be recertified. I know doctors have to pass the medical boards and that some move on to fellowships and specialties, but shouldn't they have professional development opportunites as well? Just recently I...
