if she had positive bloodwork and biopsy 9 months ago,
sorry, never mind. .... I was just going to say, that skinnyasparagus did not mention what specific testing she had which prompted her to go gluten free nine months ago.

Sometimes barley, malt and rye (and some oats) can hide in "Spices" and "Natural Flavors". In that case, you may need to call the company.
Here is a list of great companies who will clearly list ALL forms of gluten:

Make sure you check your vitamins, meds, lotions, lipsticks/balms as well

Welcome Andy,
Wheat is considered one of the top allergens that must be listed by law. Barley, malt, and rye do not have to be listed and yes, they often can hide in spices or natural flavors. Under the US labeling law, barley, malt and rye are not required to be listed.
It is common practice to look for companies who will clearly list ALL forms of gluten in their ingredient listing or allergen statements. Here is a listing of those companies:

Campbell's has a very limited gluten free listings in the United States. Campbell's Canada has a totally different gluten free listings.
It was just a few years ago that wheat did not have to be disclosed. I take comfort in small step forward!
This is a great site with the best information around. Take a walk around.

Rubber Bands for your hair!
Give it a new definition, doesn't it?

Welcome,
I hope that you are under the care of a professional at this time. What medical consultation or testing have you had?

When your intestines are damaged, most food will bother you until some healing can take place. I would stick to foods that are easy on your tummy at first.
Imitation crab meat is a no-no.
Some here have other intolerances. It might be too soon to tell. Get the gluten out, and then you might know about other issues.

I had an endoscopy a few weeks ago and an additional blood test. I received my results today and everything is negative. The doctor wishes to proceed with a colonoscopy but I don't know.
If everything is negative, does that mean I don't have celiac's disease or the sprue? I've been living gluten free for 9 months now and I just feel as if everything's a joke. Everything was better from what it has been. I have more energy, I feel more active, but..are my reactions mental? I still get stomach pains, I still feel snaps in my stomach that I know aren't mental, I break out in minor hives every once in a while, I get D and C, heartburn, and I'm unable to maintain my weight.
I'm lactose free so I know its not dairy.
If its not celiac's disease, what is it? What will a colonoscopy prove? Should I proceed with it or just let it go and stick to what I know I feel is right? I just don't know if so many negatives mean that I can still have celiac's disease, even if the doctor can't find anything.
I've done all levels of blood testing and an endoscopy with biopsies of the stomach and small. No bacteria was found either.
I guess..I just need help and advice. Am I crazy? Am I mental? What should I do now?
After nine months gluten free, it's not unusual for negative testing. You may not be able to get a diagnoses due to the fact that you are off gluten, but it might be fair to say that you have at the least a gluten intolerance and/or gluten allergy, as indicated by your occasional symptoms. Be careful about your diet and make sure no gluten is surprizing.
Anytime your have digestive issues, it's a good rule to have both an endoscopy and colonoscopy to rule out more serious issues.

I would continue to seek medical advise. Have you had him tested for food allergies? What are his symptoms?

It will get easier. I have seen some wonderful changes in the last few years.

I took my two year old who I suspect has Celiac to a chiropractor today because a friend of mine said her son's milk allergies went away after being adjusted. The chiropractor said that a lot of times trauma during birth like having their head pulled excessively or smashed can cause the spinal cord to stretch and cause things in the nervous system to go out of place and by adjusting those, food allergies and other problems often go away. It makes sense but I've never seen any research about it. I was just curious what your experiences were and if there was a connection here.
I can't imagine a possible connection. How and why was your two years old suspected of Celiac? If that is the case, there is no cure other than diet (at least for now).

Although I was glad to see this article today, it is not totally accurate. Both the writer and Dr. Gott refer to Celiac Sprue as an allergy. And, there are a few other non-relevant statements.
And I found it humorous Dr. Gott included his article on IBS to the author. Perhaps as a consolation prize for being selected for his column.

Where would I go?
We live in West TN. The ped gastro she sees is at Vanderbilt Childrens in Nashville. 2 hours away.
There is another Childrens Hospital 2 hours in the other direction -- Lebhoneur.
Anyone know any good celiac docs in TN??

Please not the the previously posted information in this thread if over two years old and current status of this product may have changed.

This might be helpful. It's a good idea to confirm with the manufacturer as well.

Two blonde girls were working for the city public works department. One would dig a hole and the other would follow behind her and fill the hole in. They worked up one side of the street, then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working furiously all day without rest, one girl digging a hole, the other girl filling it in again.
An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn't understand what they were doing. So he asked the hole digger, 'I'm impressed by the effort you two are putting in to your work, but I don't get it -- why do you dig a hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?'
The hole digger wiped her brow and sighed, 'Well, I suppose it probably looks odd because we're normally a three-person team. But today the girl who plants the trees called in sick.'

I am scheduled for capsule endoscopy next month...I was wondering how easy it is to swallow the capsule...
I have not had the experience, but I do understand that it's the most conclusive testing available. Good luck.

I just started the gluten free diet 4 days ago. I'm feeling very down, discouraged and just don't feel like doing anything. What vitamins (if any) do you suggest I take to make me feel like I used to.
Rachael
I would suggest that you contact your doctor and get a full blood work up to see where you may be deficient. Your b-12 of folic acid may be off.

I think we'll just stick with the Kettle products now or the Lays Stax you all recommended! Thanks!
You know, I thought it said "gluten free" on the bag, but maybe I was mistaken...maybe I read the ingredients and THOUGHT it was gluten free - EITHER way if you go to their website it lists Cheetos as a gluten free food!! So maybe that's not "advertising" it but it says it is! Then if you call it says it can't garuntee no cross contamination.
The Frito/Lays Website notes that Lays Staxx are gluten free, because they are produced on dedicated lines for only that product. Their other products listed as not having gluten ingredients, but are at risk for possible cross contamination with other products. There is a large difference in this simple play of words. Make sense?
This is not to say that you can eat Lays Products without issue. Some here do and some don't.
It's a hard world out there for us Celiacs. Hope this helps.

Yup, sinkers are good.
Have you had any testing?
-
Holly provided a great list. Please note at the bottom of the list is a statement regarding Lays Staxx manufactured on dedicated lines and are considered FREE OF GLUTEN.
The rest of the extensive listing does not say FREE OF GLUTEN, but MAY be subject to cross contamination during production. Some people here are sensitive to Lays Products, others are not.
Confused About Gluten Sensitivity (been Asked Before, Sorry! )
in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Posted
I'm not sure I understand your question, but here goes...
If you get sick after eating gluten, you are at the least gluten intolerant/sensitive, have a gluten allergy, or have Celiac Disease. That is something that would would know without a doctor - gluten makes you sick.
If you have Celiac Disease you will get sick, in addition, the autoimmune reaction will make your body turn against itself and attack you small intestines. A doctor can run a blood test and/or endoscopy and biopsy to confirm Celiac Disease. The reaction is the same. One does damage, the other does not.
In both cases, when you no longer eat gluten and feel better there is no way to tell if you are gluten intolerant/sensitive or have Celiac Disease, so therefore the testing.
The RX for both, is the gluten free diet.
