  1. It would absolutely kill me if I posted a NEG list and people trusted it and even 1 person got sick based on my list.

No way could I do that.

    No way.

That's why it's important to be our own advocate. Whether you read about the gluten status of a product here, another site, in a book, or through personal recommendation, the bottom line is, what you put into your mouth of feed to your children, is your responsibility alone.

Learning to read labels had not generated any issues for me.

  2. .

So, it doesn't sound like I have celiac, but rather gluten sensitivity. What's the difference? My sister does have celiac. Would my condition turn into celiac if left untreated? Because of my sons, we switched to a Gluten-free Casein-free diet over three months ago, although I have infractions when my and husband and I go out to dinner. Can I still have infractions if I take digestive enzymes?

    Thanks for your help!

    Amy

Enterolabs cannot diagnose Celiac Disease. A Serologic Panel can test Celiac. Gluten intolerance is that, an intolerance. Celiac is an autoimmune response to gluten. Some people here think that a gluten sensitivity is the precursor to Celiac. I have seen no research to validate that concept. Research is young in this field.

If you do have Celiac and you have a family history, each "infraction" will cause damage to your body. If you are gluten sensitive, you may have symptoms as in Celiac Disease, but not the autoimmune response with Celiac Disease.

Digestive enzymes may be helpful, but it will not ward off the autoimmune response if you indeed have Celiac Disease.

  3. I am newly diagnosed with Celiac Sprue and having a tough time finding medications that are gluten-free.

In particular, I need a birth control pill to help manage endometriosis. When I call the drug companies I always get some form of..."the starch in the product is made from corn, however we cannot claim that it is entirely gluten-free because we do not test for it..."

What does that mean? Should I not use that pill then?

Does anyone know of any gluten-free birth control pills that are safe?

My doctor was absolutly no help. He just told me to call around.

    Thank you for any guidance!

    Welcome!

It means that they cannot verify that a product is gluten free unless they test it. If no gluten ingredients are in a product (meds specifically), I generally assume that it's a CYA statement. Meds are not producted on shared equiptment.

Here is a listing of gluten free meds. It's always good to call the company to have a second confirmation.

  4. Hi bnj! Welcome to this site. Everyone here has been in your shoes and we can help you make the gluten free transition.

I recently had a chance to review the Triumph Dining - "The Essential Gluten Free Grocery Guide". I was quite impressed and sure wished that it was available when I were newly diagnosed. The Guide lists over 30,000 main stream grocery products. Information on the Guide can be found on wwwtriumphdining.com. Lists are great in the beginning, but it's not too good to depend on them in the long run because ingredients do change and they may become out of date.

People with Celiac Disease cannot have wheat, barley, malt, rye and most oats. Wheat, one of the 8 recognized allergens, must be listed if it's an ingredient. Barley, malt, rye do not have to be listed. Sometimes, depending on the product, they can be hidden in species or natural flavors.

I won't throw too much at you at one time. But, this is a great site for most of the information that you will be needing during this transition.

I know that you are overwhelmed right now, but trust me, it will get better. And welcome again.

  5. I can no longer have butter so I need a good replacement for not only baking but also to put on toast and muffins. Thank you. If there is anything that taste close to butter that would be wonderful I love butter on my toast along with my peanut butter all melted together :D

If dairy is your concern, I believe Earth Balance is dairy free.

  6. I think people can reading into anything that which they want to here. If you feel your are a second class citizen here because you have a gluten intolerance, I'm sorry for that.

Input here is a given freely to everyone equally.

Because I was diagnosed with Celiac through a biopsy and then found this site to figure out what it was, doesn't really give me any advantage here. Nor have I seen anyone treated differently in my time here.

IF there is a prejudice here, it's self perceived, in my opinion.

...the topic of this tread is Dr. Fine and his work.

  7. I have been an advocate for the prevention and victims of child sexual abuse for many years. I know a little bit about the subject.

A twelve year old little boy looking at some porn on a computer does not make him a victim of sexual abuse nor a perpetrator. It is very typical of the age and exploring is natural.

Questioning a child that is not your own about inappropriate touching should not be done. If need be, it should left to professional and/or the proper legal authorities.

As in all situations, always keep the line of communications open at your home.

  8. Dealing with other parents can be tricky. Yup.

You could go over to the child's house and ask the him to tell his parents what he was doing on your computer. Maybe if the parents hear it from their son, they would be more likely to believe it.

Secondly, this would be my preference, you could re-define your house rules to ensure that the computer is only used by family during supervised times. The your son's friend is not in any immediate danger (at least at this age), so it might be better to leave his parents out of this at this point. No parent wants to hear that their child was not acting appropriately in another parents eyes, right or wrong. Some handle it well, others don't.

No one wrote the "Parenting Handbook" and there will be many, many things you will just have to wing it, and deal with as things as they arise.

  9. Just a heads up about a drug manufacturer.

Watson Pharmaceuticals is not a gluten free facility! I spoke with a pharmacist there this morning and she said "we don't test any of our products for gluten." I take a generic fiorinal that is manufactured by them. I have been getting a reaction similar to a gluten reaction from other sources - increased heart rate/heart pounding. I will no longer take them, since they don't know what's in the pill.

Just because a manufacturer does not test for gluten, does not mean that it's not gluten free.

I don't know if this is the case with this company, but many companies cannot - correction, WILL NOT declare a product gluten free, even though there are no gluten ingredients. Companies are concerned about law suit and will put out a CYA statement.

And then again, your information is just as good as the customer service employee that spoke to you. Try to call at another time and see if you get the same answer.

  10. Hey all! Kara has a temp of 101. She's allowed to take an Ibuprofen but now I'd like to give her Tylenol. I bought the Very Berry Strawberry and on their website..it says it has not been tested for gluten but they can't imagine it containing gluten b/c they use corn starch etc.

Has anyone here used this specific flavor of Tylenol? Thanks so much!

Here's a link to some tylenol. Hope she's better soon.

  11. I'm getting a gastroscopy biopsy on Wednesday. The nurse told me they were going to give me drugs to relax me, but I'm so worried I will feel everything. I was wondering if anyone had gotten this done and what you felt about it.

    thanks

    Rachael

I was sedated and I don't remember anything of the procedure. I had a soar throat for a day or so, but that's about it. Even without sedation, you would not feel much of anything with the biopsy because there are little nerve endings in your small intestines.

I would make sure that you bring someone with you. My GI spoke to me after the procedure, but I have no recall of it. I had to ask my husband several times what the doctor said. I had a good sleep the rest of the day.

    Not to worry ;)

  12. I just got a definitive diagnosis with the genetic test.

    Liz

I may be incorrect, but according to what I understand, if you posses the appropriate genes, it does not give you a diagnosis. It can indicate that you may be predisposed to Celiac Disease, but it does not diagnose you with Celiac Disease. If you carry the Celiac gene, does not mean that you will develop Celiac. Perhaps, that is what you mean. :)

  13. With a history of digestive issues, an endoscopy exam could look for other concerns aside from Celiac Disease. I think it might be wise to pursue in adults, as well as a colonoscopy.

In young children, it's another issue. And a personal choice. As mentioned by Jestgar, if the diet is unsuccessful after a reasonable amount of time, I would pursue other testing, with the help of a medical doctor.
