Bea,
I appreciate your story about your mother. It's nice that you have a history with/of your mother, mine unfortunately died when I was a toddler. I have no history with her or about her.
I am the first, to my knowledge, to be diagnosed with Celiac Disease or associated afflictions. History begins with me.
It is well known, that undiagnosed Celiac Disease, can develop into some fatal concerns. Once diagnosed, the diet is for life. But, all roads do not lead to or follow Celiac. Celiac Disease is one small aspect in the whole physiology of life and aging. Perhaps, if your mother followed a strict gluten free diet, she may live well into her 100's. Surviving into the 90's, to me, is a job well done.

Patti is the #1 all time poster! WOW
Bev, hope you feel better soon, and Laura, thinking about you tomorrow.

The intestinal permeability test is non specific for Celiac. Which is probably the reason your doctor wanted to confirm his thoughts with a biopsy.
A gluten free diet will, in fact, jeopardize your accuracy in testing with an endoscopy exam. A good six weeks should be sufficient time to reek havoc in your small intestines. Although, no testing methods are currently available that are 100% conclusive.
You don't have to pursue further testing if you just can't do it. A positive dietary response is a diagnosis enough. You already know you either have Celiac, a gluten intolerance/sensitivity or a gluten allergy.

I am one that does not react anymore. I have stayed on the diet for over three years. I certainly have been exposed to cross contamination over these past two years, yet I don't react.
I believe that I have healed to the point that an occasional glutening will not cause me issues. I do not eat gluten intentially. It would take repetitive glutenings over an unknown period of time, to create the level of damage for me to be symptomatic.
There is a great deal of research that needs to be studied post gluten free diet. I don't think we have all the answers yet.

Ah, I see now at the bottom the quote source. Thanks Janet for pointing that out.

Good for you.
I smoked for over 30 years. Since my smoking and drinking went hand in hand, I bit the bullet and stopped both. I
I used Chantex and it worked well with me. Although, you have to be ready and willing for the best results.
I could never return to cigarettes. CONGRATULATIONS.

It's a personal choice.
Sorry, but one link won't work.
pj, I have always heard and read that Chic-fil-A's fries were gluten free, using the same process/explanation as stated by the Celiac Sprue Association.
As with everything, educate yourself and then make a choice that is best for you.

I have heard the same thing. However, when I consume a liquor with a wheat base (which is most of them) I feel sick the next day. (not hang over sick, just sick.) Now this could be another allergy but if I stick to the clears and choose vodka's made of potato or corn I do not have the same problems. So personally I decided to stay safe rather than sorry.
As for Beer. I love Woodbridge, made by Budwiser. The ciders are also very good and gaining in popularity.
Hope this information is helpful!
Redbridge is made by Budwiser, and it is their gluten free beer. Several members here do react to grain based alcohol and vinegars. You might be one of the sensitive ones.

okay so i have read this whole thread from start to finish and am now really really unsure as to whether some vodkas are gluten free and some arent?i tend to only drink vodka and a wide range of brands, but mainly just the plain smirnoff. does anyone actually know?thanks
I can't help you make that choice, but I wanted to give you a cheer for making it throught the whole thread.

By the way, how is it that the Caramel coloring is safe? I was reacting to soap with it in it.
https://www.celiac.com/articles/182/1/Unsaf...ents/Page1.html
Scroll down to the bottom of this link. It indicates that caramel color in the US is generally safe. It also states that caramel color must comply with US FDA labeling rules (not to include barley malt)
So my conclusion would be that it is not likely, but possible that caramel color in the US could contain gluten. My rule of thumb is to get two sources of confirmation regarding a gluten status of a product.
I believe there is a listing of Starbuck Products around here somewhere. I would agree that seasonal product would be suspect.
EDIT:
Here we go: Open Original Shared Link
Not gluten-free:
Any frappachino with "chips" (Java Chip or Chocolate Chip)
Cafe Vanilla Frappachino and Vanilla Bean Cream Frappachino. These both contain the Vanilla Bean Powder, which is produced in an area that also produces gluten-containing items. The uncontaminated Vanilla Bean Powder would be gluten-free, according to the rep.
Eggnog drinks These are only on the menu during the holiday season. They may or may not be gluten-free, depending on the local suppliers.
All other beverages are gluten free (as long as they don't have any of the "chips").
Note: Although Starbucks routinely rinses pitchers after each drink is made, the customer service representative said gluten-free customers can request that the pitcher go through a sanitizer before their drink is made

You're right, caramel color in the US is no longer considered an issue for Celiacs. Could it have been some cross contamination?
Hope you feel better soon.

Currently the Celiac Disease Foundation and Celiac Sprue Association do not recognize stool testing as a legitimate means of diagnoses.
Some people here have been satisfied with their result from Enterolabs. Enterolabs can show sensitivity, but they cannot diagnose for Celiac Disease.
Your daughters tested positive, therefore you or your husband (or both) carry the gene. Not all blood works is accurate. Testing can rule Celiac in, but it cannot rule it out.
-
So, it sounds like testing isn't all that necessary or usefull. Which is a relief since getting testing would require too much stress in trying to get a doc to actually help me.
I've been reading some info on this site but have only just started. Where is the best place to start with the facts I need before beginning the diet.
Here is a good start, with various categories on our home page. (or click on the top of this page Celiac Disease Info)

I don't have other food issues (knock on wood), but many here have issues with soy.
Others will post.

Hi Robin and welcome! Glad you found this site.
Celiac Disease testing is not what we would like at the present time. The Serologic Panel can rule Celiac in, but it cannot rule it out, as the same with and endoscopy/biopsy. The only true test, and the least scientific is positive dietary responce.
A positive dietary response will not tell you if you have Celiac, a gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity or a gluten allergy.
We have several people who were so relieved of prolonged symptoms that they gladly accept any level of gluten issues.
If you continue to eat gluten, this is the Serologic Panel to request from your doctor:
Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG
Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA
Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA
Total IgA level.
If you have any further question, feel free to ask.
