  1. I was diagnosed 3 months ago and have been on the diet ever since. I get severly and instantly sick if i eat it by mistake. The last few days it seems to be getting worse even though im eating the same foods. Could i suddenly be developing a problem with lactose? thats the only thing that i can think of that i am having out of my normal foods. Anyone know? please help im tired of being sick....thanks christine :(

    You are among good company!

Once you master the gluten free diet and gluten is removed, then you can hear some other voices of issues.

It's often recommended to you illiminate dairy along with gluten.

Try to give up dairy for a month or two. After some time, I easily reintroduced dairy and I have no problem now.

It might also be helpful to keep a food diary.

  2. My family doctor and I believe I have Celiac disease. He sent me to a Gastrointestinal doctor. At first appointment (consultation) he said that he was glad that physician sent me to him so he could biopsy me to see if I had celiac disease. He performed Upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. When I went to office for biopsy results, he said that I have all these things wrong, but didn't mention Celiac disease. When I asked him about it, he said he did NOT biopsy that area. He acted at first like he wanted to perform UE again and I said no. He then had me get Celiac panel even after I told him I was on gluten-free diet. Just got negative results and again reminded him that I've been gluten-free for awhile, and he said that it did NOT matter if I had been eating gluten or not. I asked for genetic test and he says that there is NOT a genetic test. HELP!!

Sounds like there is a communication problem between your family doctor and the GI. After your consultation, you made it clean that he was to take samples for Celiac Disease -- and he did not biopsy that area. Uh, I would get my money back.

Unfortunately, your story is one of thousands that I have read here. Many of us have learned to be our own advocates toward our own health.

Enterolabs can do genetic testing to see if you carry the specific genes. I have not used them, and I do not recommend them for that reason. Many people here have.

At this point, a positive dietary response is an accepted diagnosis. If it works....

    And, welcome!

  3. Hello, can anyone recommend what kind of testing is the best, to help identify food intolerences? right now, it seams EVERTHING upsets my stomach!

These are the tests to order for Celiac Disease:

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

    Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

    Total IgA level.

Your doctor can order some allergy testing.

  4. I have an interesting question. Has anyone here gotten ill from being in a fast food restaurant? I work in an area thats 70 feet from a McDonalds (food court style so its open air) and every time I'm at work I get sick. Any thoughts?

I would think it very unlikely. You could be getting ill from grimmy little or big hands or crumbs from the food court.

  5. I've seen baking powder and soda in our local co-op that are tagged as gluten-free. Is there something I'm missing? What is in them that makes them not gluten-free? Are they made in a plant that could cause contanination?

I buy Rumford baking powder because it's alum-free, and just recently noticed that it also says gluten-free.

    Thanks.

Both are gluten free, but so are broccoli and carrots. I believe it's called "jumping on the bandwagon".

I suppose that some brands could have some additives. But pure baking soda and powers do not contain gluten.

  6. Hi All! Walmart just set up an entire aisle of Halloween candy and I wanted to see if anyone had up to date information on what's safe for us. I know Hershey and M&M/Mars haven't been as helpful as in the past but if anyone's called any of the companies lately or if you've had a reaction to a certain candy, I'd love to hear about it. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there right now. Thanks and happy early Halloween!!

You can be on the look out for the R.O.C.K candy list. They issue a current candy list around halloween time.

  7. Hello All,

I have a couple other questions:

How long after eating a product with gluten in it do the symptoms occur. I find that about 15 min or less after eating something I get gas pains, bloating and diaherra. Is this typical?

Also, is numbness a symptoms? I have had numbness in my lower leg for quite some time and not sure why.

Thanks for all the great info!! :)

You will learn that everyone is different. Some react rather quickly and some react 24 or more hours later.

At my sickest, I believe it took about 20 minutes. Now, if I do react, it might take about 24 hours. A lot depends on healing.

The numbness is called peripheral neuropathy and it can be caused by autoimmune diseases, diabetes and alcoholism.

Sublingual (under the tongue) B-12 helped me a lot.

I would recommend a full metabolic panel (used to be called executive panels) to test of deficiencies. Once you know what you are lacking, suppliments can speed up your recovery.

  8. I was trying to confirm whether my birth control medication (Yasmin) was safe (I had always assumed it was but thought I should double-check) so I called the company. It was explained to me that gluten is made up of glutenin and gliadin, and it is only the gliadin that is "thought to" cause problems for celiacs. Yasmin contains glutenin (thought to not be a problem) but not gliadin. I found it a bit weird that the guy kept saying these things are "thought to" cause problems or "thought not to" cause problems....like they don't know for sure. Has anyone else heard this before? Can we use something with glutenin? Yasmin is the only pill that works for me....the others caused nasty side effects.

Yasmin is listed as gluten free below. With this information and information from the company, I would consider your BC safe.

  9. I am still new to this. Have you found you get a reaction from working with flour for instance. I have a little son and I have liked to make him homemade bread and muffins and so on. I haven't because I am afraid - but I sure want to? He has no issues with gluton.

Gluten can not be absorbed through the skin, but the flour dust can be inhaled and create problems for you. If you have a gluten allergy, it may be an issue.

I would think that the dust from the flour would be everywhere in your kitchen and contaminate everything near. Maybe you can buy some good homemade bakery goodies for your son.

  10. I recently read that Maltodextrin in the United States has always been made from corn, however wheat is begining to show up in it (in the United States). I asked on of my commerical food companies to see what their Maltodextrin was made from and she told me I was crazy and get very defensive. I will continue to ask companies that I do business with.

If you are at all in doubt, call the company that makes the item and make them research what their Maltodextrin is made from.

I would like to see the documentation for your statement.

It is FDA LAW that should Maltodextrin be derived from a wheat sourse that it MUST be listed as "Maltodextrine (wheat)", in the United States.

  11. Here is some information on symptoms:

    https://www.celiac.com/articles/1106/1/Celi...toms/Page1.html

Everyone is different as far as reactions. But, you certainly have some related symptoms for Celiac, gluten intolerance or gluten allergy.

If you decide to test, this is what should be ordered from a doctors:

Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG

    Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA

Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA

    Total IgA level.

...remain on gluten until testing is over.

    Welcome!

  12. Hello all, I will call the formula manufacturers. I also did not know that gluten could be passed through the breast milk. I will insist they both get checked, I hope the doctors listen! we all know how that is! I guess I sounded a bit harsh in my first post, maybe I should ellaberate more. The baby wasnt suckling, and so they didnt keep trying, so, after hours passed by, they didnt try the bottle until after I complained, which is very bad enough. I cant understand, for the life of me, why the nurses didnt intervene until hours later? that just blows my mind. If I had it my way, I would be there every minute!! but, thats a different story, all I can do is offer advice, which, Im glad all of you can help! thanks again for all the help!

  13. First of all, I think that most of us thought of Celiac as a welcome diagnosis. A simple (well, not so simple in the beginning) dietary change is it's RX.

You most certainly can have Celiac, a gluten intolerance or a gluten allergy. You can rule Celiac in, but testing cannot rule it out. There are no guaranteed diagnosis other than a positive dietary response.

Give the diet a full 100% for about a month and see how you feel. But, I believe you already have found your answer.

  14. I don't know your history, but it may be likely that your grandson has inherited the genes for Celiac.

There have been many discussions here about gluten being transferred into breast milk. I would make sure that your daughter is not ingesting gluten while breast feeding. Check the formula and make sure that it is gluten free.

I have to admit, that ignoring a two month old for 10 hours, is bordering on abuse. I am certainly glad that you interceded.

I would continue to seek medical advise immediately until your grandson is comfortable with the bottle or the breast and can gain weight and strength.

    Good luck.

  15. This is my first time I am making an entry on the forum. I have been reading all of the information on the forum for the past few weeks. My daughter was dx'd as possibly having celiac disease in early August. Her gliadin IGG/IGA came back a 91 (normal range <45) and her Transgutaminase IGA 233 (normal <20). She had two endoscopies. The first was before labs came back and was deemed normal "with no endoscopic explanation for patient's symptoms". Once the labs came in, the endoscopy was repeated and biopsies done. These came back negative.

The next test that was done was a G.I./G.U. Small Bowel Only. I have not seen this test mentioned anywhere in regards to diagnosing celiac and I hope it is helpful informatin for you mosaicmom. The result came back "area of abnormality in likely distal jejunum consisting of rounded areas of hypertrophy in the lumen surrounded by barium. This has a mosaic pattern" Impession: findings concerning for sprue in the jejunum as described. Crohn's disease felt to be less likely.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this testing? In your opinion does this confirm dx of celiac? My daughter had to leave for college the end of August so we will not be going back to GI until November when she returns for break.

I hope I did not give too much information!

    Wildwood,

You daughter has recieved a positive diagnosis through her blood work, which doesn't need to be supported by an endoscopy exam. She does have Celiac.

You daughter may have been lucky to have been diagnosed before any considerable damage was done. (Although, a barium test is does not diagnose).

  16. I have had great experiences. The staff is knowledgeable and very accommodating. They will even cook your own pasta for you.

The menu is extensive for a nice restaurant, from a great caesar salad to a drop dead desert.

    I highly recommend Carrabas. :D
