Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan and New York Congresswoman Nita Lowey have introduced legislation that will require drug manufacturers to label the source of drugs' inactive ingredients. This is huge!
To move the bill ahead we need bipartisan cosponsors by May 8!
All five of the national celiac organizations are united in support of this legislation.
We need our congressional members to have that same shared voice and put forward a bipartisan message:
The safety of our constituents matters; and
Gluten in medicine must be labeled so individuals and their healthcare providers can make an informed, safe choice.

I am new to this forum so please forgive me if I have not done something correct. We are traveling to the Outer Banks in N.C. and was wondering if someone could recommend good places to eat.
There is an Outback and Five Guys Burger chain that offer gluten free options.
Most restaurants are privately owned and operated. Some of my frequent joints are:
High Cotton BBQ - great ribs and brisket (gluten-free)
Black Pelican - super shrimp and grits, lots of local seafood
Blue Moon Cafe and Grill - salads or they will custom prepare for you
Ocean Boulevard - awesome food but pricey
Tortuga's Lair - Caribbean style
Long Cedar Restaurant - dedicated french frier
You can find most on the internet with contact information. I would call ahead during non busy hours (but their always busy during the high season)
Harris Teeter and Food Lion carry gluten free staples.
Also try to google "Outer Banks Gluten Friendly Restaurants":

It's lovely this time of year. Enjoy!

Unreasonable, maybe. But, they are in the business to sell food with service.
I don't know if you have other food restrictions, but you could order a plain garden salad (without croutons) and bring your own dressing.
A plain (uncut) baked potato, some broiled seafood or some steamed shrimp.
I often order a cheeseburger without a bun. But you should ask them to clear a clean area on the grill.
Can you find their menu on line?

I hope all 200 views here have sent in a letter.

I am beginning a new thread, because there have been several inquiries regarding maintaining medical insurance after a diagnosis of Celiac Disease.
Please contribute your situation or professional information.
Thanks!

Edit: Now just a cottonpickin minute ya psilly Goose! That last one got edited WHILE I'm off reading the link that was there a minute ago! ( or I am goin nuts)
Ok. ....some lines can be disregarded now...
So glad I have nothing else to do tonight TOM!
Yes, I deleted because it really did not answer your question.
Surely, there are members here who can decipher the Obama Health Care Place or insure the OP that all will be well.
Ok! I will start a new thread. It's a valid question. Off I go.....

Yay!!! Thanks for posting this - it made my day!
Hope you sent your letter in.

Thx Lisa.
D'oh I went to link & it's got a lot about the uninsured, pre-ex conds, & kids but I couldn't find anything there about insured ppl getting dumped.
I really don't think that a person can be "dumped" for a preexisting condition.
-
I didn't bring up insurance worries or say she'd get cancelled.
The OP said she was worried that her ins might be canceled.
I said I thought they couldn't legally do that anymore.
It's something they had been doing for a long time.
I was mostly hoping that someone following the implemention of - what should we be calling the health care bill here? - the ACA more closely than I would weigh in and ease the OP's worries.
It's been a valid concern for patients in the past & won't be in the future, right?
P.S. As far as employment-based health insurance I gotta believe the OP wouldn't have originally mentioned cancellation worries if that were the case.

Thank you for the welcome Lisa. How are you coping with being a celiac? I know that even though I've been gluten free for 3 years it's still really hard.
I generally don't have a problem day to day. I can always find "something" in a restaurant to eat.
Do you work or are you at home?
-
I guess I'm just not sold on that. I don't want to take a medication that simply deals with the symptoms rather without eradicating the cause of the issue.
I'm with you there!!!! And yes, he ordered one test, that was not specific to Celiac. If you are not yet, gluten free, he can run the tests again using the full panel.
If not, you can opt to go fully gluten free and see if you symptoms subside. It does take time though, depending on the level of damage. And further testing cannot be accurate with gluten no longer in your system.
Many people here are self diagnosed and they feel quite comfortable with it. Some want a dx from a medical doctor. I guess you have to decide that yourself.
Hope that helps.
There are varied criterias for diagnosis.
Celiac Panel - Positive
Endoscopy Exam w/ biopsy - positive
Genetic pre-disposition - positve
Positive Dietary Results - positive
DH biopsy - positive

Hi Everyone
I have been on a high the past 5 weeks since commmitting fully to gluten-free (as long as I can get my head around the labelling).
I crashed this morning with sore tummy (pinching and injured feeling)and a return of gas although nothing like it was before gluten-free.
There are 2 things that I figure may have caused it and would appreciate your input - firstly I had some essential waitrose mint sauce on my home cooked roast lamb last night - on the label it didn't mention gluten but it did say thickeners and spirit vinegar. Could it be the vinegar and also what thickener may have been in it that may cause a reaction?
I am eating a little grated cheese on a baked potato most days and wondering if it is a delayed sort of catch up reaction to that?
The tummy discomfort is about 3/10 on my pain scale and nowhere like a full blown reaction but enough to make me feel pretty crabby and lousy. BM have remained pretty much normal.
pain is like a mild menstrual cramp but is kind of numb and removed if you can possibly understand what I mean?
I am self diagnosed with back up in principal from my GP due to going gluten light before blood test(neg), no biopsy, positive DQ2 gene, symptoms and removal (until today) of symptoms after going gluten-free. Had the classic journey to here after 20 years of misdiagnosis of IBS etc. All other symptoms are clear at present including edema which I had not attributed to celiac but have noticed that for the first time in years I hav no swelling.
Any input gratefully received x
Welcome Jig!
First of all I would recommend keeping a food journal, to include vitamins, meds, lotions or anything that could pass your mouth.
Let me suggest that you give up all dairy products for at least 30 days. Sometimes, when you remove one element, you hear other voices.
And many times you can add dairy products into your diet successfully after your "gut" heals a bit.
And we can do a tutorial on label reading.
So glad that you have found a remedy to some of your past ills. And, welcome again to our club.

Or maybe it's "Start New Topic" ?
Yes

You might not ever know. But, it might be a good idea to keep a food journal. It's makes it easier to identify an issue.
It's easy to equate all our issues to gluten.
And I think your symptom was heartburn. Some foods did not agree with me before I had Celiac symptoms. It could happen with many things to include an unhealed gut.
-
Glutinos Table crackers. It was an old jar. Probably glutened.
Possible that someone in your home double dipped? And in the beginning, many foods can bother us, regardless of their gluten free status, until some healing can take place.

Hi all. I'm newby. The blood test was negative but then I told Dr I'd stopped consuming wheat three weeks before the needle went in, so it apparently means nothing.
It's certainly celiacs. I had multiple symptoms of it until I stopped eating wheat and woah! Its a miracle. I'm not ill anymore and still improving.
Despite taking iron supps I'm near anaemic. Anyone know how long before my iron levels will get back up to somewhere near normal.
Mod. Let me start topics. I'm a good celiac! I AM!!!
You can. Choose a category on the Home Page of the Forum, and click on new post. And welcome!

Thanks for your insight!
I did request my blood and biopsy reports. Here are the results:
Transglutaminase: <3.0
IgA: Negative
Duodendum biopsy: Duodenal mucosa with normal villous architecture and slight prominence of intrapithelial lymphocytosis.
Silly Doctor!
The following are the celiac specific blood tests:
Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA
Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG
Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA
Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA
Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG
Total Serum IgA

So, before I knew about my coliacs, I couldn't gain weight. I used to be SOO hungry I'd be practically bingeing, always craving sweet and chocolaty foods..and food in general. I didn't have an E.D....I was just SO hungy. Anyways, I was underweight for my height and I was trying to gain weight.
Now, after going gluten-free even though it hasn't been too long, my appetite has gone back to normal, but I'm gaining weight. I was more than happy to go 2lbs over my healthy weight, but now it's going UP and FAST....is this temporary? I'm not eating over my calculated calorie limits or whatever makes you gain.
Your body was in the starvation mode while you were sick. So, it's over compensating now. It should settle down. And be careful of gluten free processed foods, cause their really high in calories.

I am 16 years old in the 11th grade and have been suffering for many years. I suffered with extreme fatigue to the point where I would sleep for 14 hours and still be tired, Severe depression and anxiety, joint pain (more than my 76 year old grandmother), decalcification of my teeth. About 2 years ago I lost 40 pounds in about a month or 2 and my mother was very worried. The hospital told us : nothing was wrong with me and other doctors said the same but one found H-Pilori and I was diagnosed with that. The thing is that even though I got past that infection, I was still sick and getting worse. About a month ago I couldn't eat without getting sick or having diarreha. My cousin is glueten sensitive so his mother told mine that I should follow that diet and I did. I got so much better - I became another person , much energy , feeling great , no more pain. I realize now that there is probably a 95% chance that I have celiac disease but I really don't want to get tested because I know that I would have to go on that horrid glueten diet again. What bothers me the most is that I could get a negative even if I go back on the diet. My question is Should I go back on the diet to get tested or just live my life this way? I dont think the pros outweigh the cons Please help, I would love to hear from others.
Hello and Welcome!
If you have a family history of Celiac and a positve response to the diet,it's likely you have Celiac Disease of a Gluten Sensitivity.
To be tested, it's recommended that a person consume gluten for three months to get the tested. Do you want to do that?
It's a personal choice.
Not too much help, am I?

I am new to the gluten free world. I was feeling great when I first got off of gluten, but now not so much. I'm wondering about Personal Items.
Can anyone tell me about Spring Grove tp (work), Dial bar soap?
What about Tide and Downy?
Playtex Tampons?
I have seen topics on these, but many are from several years ago.
None of those products should be a gluten concern.

I actually think I posted about 15 posts the first few days but only 10 showed up. I was looking to the forum to help me better learn more about Celiac and also help others with my experience with the disease, but it is hard to do it when my posts do not show up. I have not posted anything inappropriate. just wondered why some posts were removed and why I still need to be moderated!
You are good to go! I hope you took time to review the Board Rules, on your way to postdom....

Iv'e found usually that after accidentally consuming gluten, it can take up to 10 days before im all good again.
Recently though ive discovered that ive I wait 2-3 days after consumption of gluten and i take lakatives it can clear out the gluten from my bowels and i feel good once more.
If there's any one else with similar expierences to this, Or any other remedys you want to share, please comment.
Conal
My exposure hits me about 24 hour later.
Instead of laxatives, I would suggest lots of water. 75% of the water we intake is absorbed in the small intestines. When it's compromised....well, you know the story...drink more water.
SO we all need to drink lots of water.

F
CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK.
*(Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients).
This was taken from their allergen information. Mdont know if this helps. M
Yes, it's true. But the wheat in the starting ingredient has been soooooo very processed that it's rendered gluten free.
In an effort of full disclosure, McD's has been honorable. The fries have been tested to be below the level that Celiacs can safely
consume.

I know that you are overwhelmed right now. It's okay to be.
This is the full panel that you should have been tested:
Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA
Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG
Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA
Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA
Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG
Total Serum IgA
An endoscopy exam can determine the amount of damage and can also look for other issues. If, indeed you do have Celiac, healing can begin the moment you remove it from your system.
I would recommend www.CeceliasMarketplace.com for the Grocery Guide. Or www.triumphdining.com for another option.
Gluten is the protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Wheat, by law, is required to be listed on an ingredient listing of a product. Barley (malt) and rye are not.
