  1. My FIL makes fried okra in cornmeal. It's not mushy or gooey like canned or steamed okra. I'm pretty sure he uses frozen. It's of the main things I look forward to at the holidays. That and my MIL's potato salad...

Hmm.... I've got some recipes to get.

Another one I thought of that my dad and his family used to do all the time was canned asparagus with mayo. My husband brought home a can of asparagus yesterday, having never had canned asparagus, and I made another convert out of him.

    Nancy

I always to canned asparagus with mayo and graded boiled egg on top... great for a summer meal.

  2. You have a point there. That's exactly why I use Vaseline. I trust it. Nothin' fancy about it. ;)

But hey, take my advice with a grain of salt! After all, I am the one who praises the virtues of Preparation "H" Cooling Gel under the eyes for puffiness! It's as good as a spa treatment!

    Hugs.

    Karen

Don't let us get started on the vaseline issue.... :D:D:D

  3. Ok.........I'm sorry, I broke the cardinal rule, which is don't post until you know for sure. ( well, at least I posted on the side of caution, whew)

When I joind the site in August there was a little this or that about chapstick and at that time after being sooo sick, I put it aside and opted for Burts Bee's. There was sooo much to learn in a short period of time

Sorry if I led a rant bout chapsick without proper documentation.

    Humbly, me :(

  4. Former party animal here. ;)

Back in my heyday (we won't mention when those were though, I will start feeling too old.......) I used to party every weekend, and usually a couple of times through the week as well. I worked for a nuclear engineering firm that was based in Switzerland, and all us secretaries used to go out partying with the engineers all the time. Had a total blast. This was of course before any diagnosis. I used to be able to drink till the cows came home and it had little effect on me. (It must have been part of my body's constitution.....)

My point is, I used to be able to tolerate alcohol, actually thoroughly enjoyed alcohol. Now, I can't even have a glass of wine without my intestines feeling like they are being put through one of those old washing machine wringers for the next few days.

I have resigned myself to the fact that I will never be a party animal again! :P;)

Oh well, who can be a party animal with four kids to take care of, right?

    Hugs!

    Karen

I take objections that Canadian Karen will never be a party girl again. You are the live wire amongst us, and for that we thank you. You are a "spirited force" that keeps us going.:rolleyes:

I am not sure if any of this is pertinent to celiac, but I would recommend to your dentist that you inform him on your condition. You may need an antibiotic, or some teeth cleaning and you might suggest that they use non powdered gloves when they do their work. I don't know exactly what they are powders with, but any power stuff makes me a little uncomfortable.

Welcome to our world. I hope that this was helpful and I am sure that others will post.

  6. I don't expect that it contains gluten, but to be on the safe side, I would e-mail the company. I just checked mine and it does list natural flavors. I would think that it would be ok, but I try to make a habit of not recommeding unless I am 100% sure. I would drink it. I buy it for my college daughter who usually wipes out my pantry when she comes home.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

  7. I always enjoyed cooking and this was an added challenge, but a no-brainer. No problems here.

It is just a lot of research and good information.........and it just took about six months to get my act together. So all the newbies out there, just know that it takes some time to learn that you can live a normal life. Seek out your local restaurants and find some safe dinners you can have when you are tired of cooking. So you can take a break.

To be honest here, I have never cooked better than I do now. I can have a totally gluten free dinner party, except serving bread to my guest, and they don't even know. They rave about the food.

    It is good.

  8. Lollie:

I am getting into a field that I am not sure about. Tiffany is the expert in this field. This is my thoughts after taking to my doctor yesterday.

The brain is a VERY complicated organ. If your brain is starved through lack of food to the brain, some of that will never be regained. That depends on the length of malnourisment to the brain. The brain is very much like the heart. If there is a blockage to the heart, in most cases the arteries to the heart will re-route themselves and find a new track.

I can't remember the amount of brain that is active, but I think it is way less than half. So, with continuous stimuli, the brain can find new places for activity and function.

My left side of my body is less responsive physically and I am right handed and most likely left brained. I have noticed a change in lack of articulation and recall. That does not mean that it is gone forever, it just means that my brain need to re-program where to put it.

I am not a medical person, this is just my theory with discussing this with my doctor.

I don't know how any one else feels about this. I definately have found myself with some mental regression, but I do feel, with proper stimulli that it can return to normal with the proper food to the brain.

This is pretty heavy for me on a Friday night.

  9. When ever I go out of town, I take a cooler with me. In that cooler, I have my gluten-free soy sauce, my own salad dressing and my book (Gluten Free Bible) that has pages in different languages that I can show the chef what my dietary issues are. I will in the quick future get the "Trump Dinning Cards" that do the same, althought they are in pocket form.

I just want you to know how serious this is for you. I had many years malabsorbtion, and my brain did not get the proper foods it needed to continue to function properly. As that result, my brain starved, my body structure starved. The good news is that I can rebuild my body, the bad news is that I can not ever regain the brian damage caused by malnoruishment. That is gone and it will never recover.

If that won't ring your bells, nothing will.

I don't mean to be harsh and the computer does not convey concern, but, please consider this a serious change in your life. It is not all that difficult once you get the hang of it.

We are all here to make it easy for you to get you on the road to healing and to prevent further damage to your body.

There are lots of people here that are here to help. That is why Scott created this site. It is all about Celiacs helping other Celiacs.

    Please keep asking questions.

  10. Hi Karleena:

Welcome here. I wish that you could monitor the posts here and I think that you can learn just about every thing you wanted to know about being gluten-intollerant or Celiac Disease.

If your good mother spend many years watching your diet, I hope that she is not distressed that you are not following her lead.

Celiac Disease is a very serious issue that can lead to not so good things. So I would encourage you to explore on your own. You are always welcome here with as many questions that you may have.

I was informed today, that I may had had a mini-stroke effecting my left side due to malabnorbtion (I can never spell that word) when nutrients could not get to my brain because my body was not absorbing the proper neutrients to feed my brain.

Join us and study this site. It will truely be more informative than any doctor you could go to. Mallory sure would like a healthy momma. Experience the lives of everyone who posts here. I think that you will be surprised. :)

    Again, welcome

  11. Outback is great, although you have to read the menu carefully. It has a lot of the regular items on it, except you have them remove certain things, such as sauce on the veggies, etc. Our waitress was very nice, but apparently hadn't dealt with this before so she didn't know much.

I had the brownie dessert and it was great, except the ice cream messed up my stomach (I can no longer eat dairy). Next time I'll just order the brownie plain!

CMCM, sorry to get off topic. Please tell me about your pup. We had to put down our lab two years ago and sort of thinking about getting a dog. I think I might post about what kind of dog is best for two retires.

    He/She is just beautiful.

  12. How about herring roe or shad roe, rolled in corn bread and fried until they pop all over the stove, dipped in katchup. Good and rich and tastes very healthy, except the frying. I was a city girl before comming to small town usa. I have even gotten to like collards, sort of.

Better yet, the roe out of a lobster in the summer. That is truely awesome. Drueling now.
