  1. So for about the past 1-2 months I've been experiencing the following symptoms:

    -weird floating stools

    -bad smelling flatulence

    -mucus-y stools

    -intermittent constipation

-increased appetite (eating between 3000-6000 calories a day, before I would eat 1800 a day to maintain my weight)

    -8lbs of weight loss

    -itchy skin bumps

    -occasional nausea

    -headaches

    -generally crappy feeling

-tiredness (sleeping between 12-14 hours a day)

-lightheaded when standing up (orthostatic blood-pressure?)

Also, I've been type 1 diabetic for 20 years (I'm 21), and despite all of these symptoms my blood sugars have been near perfect.

My aunt was diagnosed with Celiac disease last year, and my uncle, on the same side of the family, has gluten intolerance.

Does this sound like Celiac disease?

Testing for Celiac would sound reasonable.

  2. I do too, and for me there doesn't seem to be any set food or pattern that sets it off. I get the pressure, belching, and also coughing and hiccups (both at the same time <_< ).

I don't take anything for it, as I find that otc antacids make it worse. Walking helps, as does drinking water, and elevating the head of the bed. I second Lisa's suggestion that you check with your doctor on this one so you know what you're dealing with.

Patti, I have noticed also that antacids don't seem to help much. Tums don't help much but I was told it's good calcium.

Regarding the hernia..when resting or beginning sleep, turning to the left or flat side helps. Right side at rest finds the discomfort.

  3. I have been having a new problem. It's really hard to describe. I have had heart burn intermittently in the past, but the last week it has been almost constant. I have been taking tums which usually works in the past, but it just keeps coming back. I haven't changed anything I eat. Then yesterday and today it feels like food is trying to claw its way out of my chest. Like burp and it feels like food is trying to come out (not up). They've also been painful at the bottom of my diaphragm. My chest feels raw on the inside. I don't know how to better describe it. Any ideas?

I have a hiatal hernia and I experience similar symptoms, sporadically. Hope you are not taking Tums Smoothies, they are not gluten free (as my last check). Regular Tums are gluten-free to my current knowledge.

You could also have developed an ulcer, or an inflamed esophagus. Maybe time to see a doctor. Acid can do some damage too.

  4. Hi-

Looking for a thyroid doctor (endocrinologist) in CT that also has experience/knowledge of Celiac's/gluten intolerance.

    Anyone able to help?

    Thanks in advance.

Perhaps some of these contacts can put you in touch with a knowledgeable doctor in your area:

  5. It would seem to me that anything you are "officialy" diagnosed with is easily obtainable via medical records so keeping Celiac a secret (which is a chronic condition & auto-immune) would need to be disclosed.

However, if you know you are gluten intolerant/celiac and it's not recorded anywhere, then I don't see how it could become an issue.

    It's all about the documentation.

    FooGirlsMom

I must add, that my information is NOT documented. :) And I'm not advocating people to make false or untrue submissions.

  6. Nooo...you definitely have to mention it. You have to declare anything that can cause health problems and death, and though celiac-caused lymphoma is rare, it does happen. If the OP was to get celiac-caused lymphoma and hadn't told the agent about it, they could refuse to pay the insurance.

I think I'd take my chances. ;) And eat well.

  7. I have to get a new life insurance policy as my old one is almost up. I met with an agent and she asked if I have any health problems. I told her about my having celiac disease. I am wondering if anyone has had a problem getting life insurance because of celiac disease.

    Thanks!

    Diane

I have not had experience with obtaining insurance. But, considering that Celiac Disease, in itself, does not require any medical intervention, *I* would not even mention it.

The "cure" for Celiac Disease is a gluten free diet, which is totally self controlled/regulated. I could see where insurance companies could be cautious.

  8. Thirty percent of the general population carry the genes "associated" with Celiac Disease. Most will never develop the disease.Close to 90%, of those those who have Celiac go undiagnosed.

I believe that 20% of those who carry the gene, will develop Celiac at some period if time. And, it takes an average of 11 years to achieve a diagnosis. I expect that these stats will change dramatically in the next few years.

If you do not carry the associated genes, you cannot develop the disease. But, it's important to know that Gluten Intolerance is a spectrum disorder, with Celiac Disease the most severe.

Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance can rival the worst of symptoms. :o

  9. Can you post the results with the lab ranges. That will help.

I was not familiar with the DGP testing, but I found this easily.

    https://www.celiac.com/articles/22043/1/Is-DGP-Serological-Test-the-Wave-of-the-Future-for-Celiac-Disease-Testing/Page1.html

"The results of these tests clearly demonstrate that IgA DGP does not offer any advantages to the IgA tTG antibodies, and is actually less accurate and more expensive. However, IgG DGP antibodies present an invaluable tool in screening for celiac disease in cases where IgA tTG tests fail. Eventually, a new antibody screening will hopefully be designed which combines IgA tTG and IgG DGP, and reduces the number of tests currently used in celiac screening. However, intestinal biopsy is always required to confirm the presence of celiac disease no matter what serological tests are involved."

  10. Update:

First, to bring all psillies up to speed . . . Skeeter (code name for me daughter) participated in a scavanger hunt at her orthodontist's office. She had to get her picture taken (with a banner from the office or wearing her T-shirt which had the office's name on it) with/at 100 different items/locations. Stuff like . . . in the produce aisle, making a snowman, at the beach (but NOT making a snowman AT the beach, that would be psillie), at a theme park, with a policeman, with a clown, with yellow flowers, with your favorite teacher, on a ferris wheel, doing kareaoke, on a trampoline, dressed as a hippie, dressed as the opposite sex, at a river, at a concert, with a lobster, with a rainbow, on a boat . . . get the idea?

Three kids out of the whole office completed the entire list so their names went into a drawing . . . and Skeeter won. She won a Dell mini laptop - Nickelodean edition. It's actually a cute little computer. I told her she won something (but didn't tell her she won the top prize) and that we had to go pick it up at the Ortho office. She was blown away . . . and really put on the excited/freaked out/giggly 9-yr-old girl show at the office and made the staff's day.

    :D:D:D Yeah!!!

  11. Awww...got to jump in here (surprise anyone? :P )

For those who DO enjoy Grits, these stone-ground grits are the best there is!!! It takes time, but it's worth it.

I cook mine in Swanson's chicken broth and when they are tender, I'll add whatever cheese I have on hand - but smoked Gouda or Havarti is the best!!! I usually serve them topped with sauteed shrimp and chopped green onions. Don't get NO betta!

  12. Thank you for all the responses and thank you especially to Lisa! That is exactly what I was looking for. I've had skin issues forever and am only now making connections. Even my dr thought I should eliminate topical irritants along with diet, so this is fabulous. So far I've only been able to get blanket statements from manufacturers that don't really help at all.

    Your welcome dd.

You might want to also check out the "Product Thread" here on the Forum. Many others have contact manufacturers with the gluten questions and post there. But, do pay attention to the dates. Manufacturers can change ingredients without notice.

Cosmetic and such are a bit different....such BIG words to confuse us and a size that only a mouse could read

    BTW - I use Lubriderm
