  1. Buena Vista, Virginia? I remember it well!

Under the Students with Disability Act, student with Celiac Disease have to be offered either gluten free options or a private place in the cafeteria for clean food self-preparations.

But you have said that you have not been officially diagnosed. I would suggest you speak to the Dean of Students or Director of Food Services and explain your situation.

The school is small enough that options should be available to you.

  2. that makes sense- but why do people with egg allergies have reactions?? if it bypasses the gut?

also- if we have ttg, antigliadin, or endomysial antibodies in the blood-> wouldnt they too start to freak out if gluten entered the bloodstream??

Because an allergy is different from an autoimmune reaction.

And to your second question...gluten can effect all body parts. Those with Celiac Disease, it (the reaction)is confined in the small intestines. Those with Dermatitis Hepitaformus, it effects the skin and to those with Gluten Ataxia, it can effect the nervous system....all an autoimmune response to ingesting gluten.

  3. Hi,

First post here and a question about testing kids with celiac. My daughter is part of a medical study and one of the things they tested for at her last visit was celiac. They have found a number of their children who are involved in the study to have this. They did the blood test (I don't have the exact name of the test) and she tested positive. their cut off for positivity was .05 and she was .086??? They will be repeating this same test when she goes in for her next visit, but what else should I be looking out for as far as symptoms? She doesn't seem to have any of the classic markers. She is growing well and very bright. She does have pretty severe mood swings and will sometimes complain that her tummy hurts. But she will lay down and 5 minutes later be up and playing again. Would you wait to have your child tested again when she goes in next (we were told no dietary changes and have not done so) or just ask to be referred to the gastro? Very confused and the research I have done into this have not given me any help. We also just did the panel for my son who is 1 and tiny, 28" and 17 lbs 12 oz. He is often crying in pain but it didn't seem to be related to his tummy. His bloodwork came back normal. Do we need to retest him later on if he continues his slow growth?

    Thanks for all you help.

    Welcome!

According to Dr. Peter Green, Director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, the anti-deaminated gliadin peptide (DGP) test is much better than any other test, for children. He also suggests that a suspected child have TWO positive tTG test before they are subjected to an endoscopy and biopsy.

It would be important to know what type of test you children were given.

  4. I agree with that bincongo!! Can I ever leave my list of safe stuff at home?? LOL

YES! Be a good label reader. Some companies choose to disclose well, now - today. But, who knows what the future will bring. In the five or more years that I have been dealing with Celiac and it's issues, I have seen TREMENDOUS improvements. With hopes, this trend will continue.

Be a good label reader, know what companies are good about all gluten disclosure and be a good citizen. And better yet, be a good representative of the Celiac Community. Represent us well with courtesy and respect. ;)

And do you own research. Be comfortable in your decisions. Ultimately, the choice is yours and only yours. :D

  5. This what I understand:

Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix does list Autolyzed Yeast Extract (Barley) - basically MSG. I believe that this is one of those components that is so processes, that it is, in fact gluten free, regardless of the source.

    The Facts

    # Autolysis is a chemical process in which salt and live yeast interacts. The salt causes the live yeast to essentially self-destruct--the digestive enzymes in the yeast "eat" themselves. This creates an inactive yeast with an entirely different set of proteins. Further processing creates autolyzed yeast extract. Many processed foods contain the ingredient; but what few are aware of is that autolyzed yeast extract, with its hearty flavoring, is also an abundant source of MSG.

    # YEAST: Baker's yeast, autolyzed yeast, and autolyzed yeast extract are gluten free. Brewer's yeast if not gluten-free unless it is found in a dietary food supplement, in which case it is gluten-free. All distilled vinegar is gluten-free. Malt vinegar is not distilled and is the only one to be avoided.

  6. Here is an additional thread with good information:

    Here is Lipton's contact information:

    Consumer Service

If you would like to speak to a live representative please call us at:

    1-877-995-4490, Monday - Friday, 8:30a.m. - 6:00p.m. EST.

Confirmed by Lipton by phone today (after holding for a half hour), only Lipton Dry Mix ONION is the only remaining mix that continues to be gluten free. There has been no ingredient change and all gluten related-natural flavoring will be identified on the label, as is the policy of Unilever.

The customer representative did not have an ingredients listing for the Kosher Lipton Dry Mix.

    Hope this is helpful.

  7. Hello everyone!! I just got back from the doctor with my 9yo. I requested to have her tested for celiac disease. Almost 2 months ago we discovered that the rash my husband has on his backside is DH. He has been gluten-free for a month and a half and he has had some great improvements in his health(and his rash). We have not had him tested yet because we would rather wait until the 1st of the year for deductable reasons.

So anyway, with all of the reading and research I have been doing on gluten-free living and celiac disease I have come across numerous symptoms that match my 9yo daughter. She has....

-Extensive dental problems(the rest of my kids have barely had a cavity)

    -She is short

-She bloats badly around her middle

-She craves carbs and sneaks food constantly

-She can be irritable and moody

-She had a severe problem with dairy as a baby (I breastfed her and had to eliminate dairy)

-A few years ago she had her blood clotting factors come back way outside normal. By the time we saw a specialist they were closer to normal

-She gets dark circles under her eyes

-She sleeps more than my other kids

I took her to the doc today who begrudgingly ordered the blood tests but insisted that they would probably come back fine. She claimed that celiac disease starts in infancy and children with celiac disease are thin and small (which my daughter isn't). I know that that isn't always true.

So am I crazy?? Do these things sound like a cause to suspect celiac disease in a child with a father who has DH?

No crazy lady here!! Your doctor is ill informed. Celiac can occur at every age.Your children may have a genetic pre-disposition as well (although no guarantee that they will develop celiac disease). In most people, it takes an average of 12 years for an official diagnosis. It was formerly known as a childhood disease. It is diagnosed in all ages and unfortunately often too late, when other more serious diseased have moved in.

Please insist on a full Celiac Panel for your daughter. Gene tests are also available. The gene testing will let you know if you are genetically susceptible to Celiac at twenty percent, or not capable of developing celiac disease.

Please keep us informed and hope we can be helpful. :)

  8. Can any of you comment on this for me? I'm not diagnosed yet and I have some questions...

Do you have strange and ongoing cravings? I crave cheese constantly. Any kind and lots of it, on just about everything I eat. And the cheese is increasing. Now it's 2 or 3 slices on a sandwich, where it used to be 1. I crave drinking milk too. And sometimes I crave anything with lots of salt. This has been happening for almost a year and it's getting more intense.

(And in case this helps you comment... I've had diarrhea for 2 years, bloating, gas, pain in my left side and the newest addition is a swollen belly for the last week.)

Having diarrhea for two years, I would certainly hope that you are under a doctors care. And while you're there get a Celiac Panel and get a full metabolic panel done. It will check for deficiencies needed for a healthy life....if you have not already done so. :)

  9. Hello- My first post! I joined today after a painful and emotional accidental experience with a gluten filled nutrition drink. I was looking for someone from NH- just curiosity and maybe someone to understand my surroundings and possible advice on nearby gluten-free stuff. I'm in southern NH but would travel for a good gluten-free meal or event.

I've been gluten-free for 7 months- been sick for over 20 years! YEAY DOCTORS! I have many medical issues beside celiac and I haven't worked in 4 years (I'm a psychiatric nurse) but things are looking up the longer I've been on this diet.

I have anxiety issues too- along with a fun array of other gluten induced mental tortures- I may be able to help you get through :)

Wanted to introduce myself and make my mark on the board
