  1. Many will disagree with me, but I believe that gluten-free personal care products are a must. Lotion, soaps, make-up, shampoo; all of these products are put on using your hands. What do you use to prepare and eat food? Right, your hands!so, if any of these products contain gluten you will be cross-contaminating everything you eat. Remember that even...
  2. My kids are this way too. They have been gluten-free for 2 1/2 years now and sometimes will skip meals and say they are not hungry. I get so upset and angry that they will not eat. The key is to find something your daughter likes and just let her eat it if she doesn't want the meal you are serving. I know it sounds like giving in, but she needs calories...
  3. Mood is very much affected by gluten when you have celiac disease or are gluten intolerant. Your body is not getting any nutrients and is basically shutting down. Of course you are going to be cranky, ditzy, and moody. Other symptoms my oldest son had were not being able to concentrate, hyper activity, basically the same symptoms as ADHD. In the beginning...
  4. My pharmacist told me that all drugs, prescription or not, manufactured in the US are supossed to be gluten free. However, drug companies cannot and will not verify that gluten has not come in contact with thier products. Drug manufacturers may get other ingredients used in thier products overseas and they are so afraid of lawsuits that they will not guarentee...
  5. My baby is now 6 1/2 months old. I was diagnosed with celiac a couple of years ago after living my entire life sickly. My other 2 kids were also diagnosed at the same time as I was. I have read all the research out there and I know that my baby has a great chance of getting the disease. Since there are so many symptoms and my baby, of course, can't tell...
  6. I just got into an argument with my husband. It was my fault, I said something stupid. He's been trying to get a specific job for over 4 years now. He has a very good chance of getting it and we were discussing what would happen if he got it. We would have to move out of state, sell our house, etc. Well I said, just don't quit after 6 months. I know...
  7. [ As for the sacrament....I'm not the best person to respond to this question. When I was younger, my mom brought a peice of my rice bread (that I hated and soon had her stop making) to church... we had our own tray and my whole family ate it (poor them!). As I got older...and hated being so different...I made her stop doing that. Ever since then I just...
  8. I went 29 years without being diagnosed and had a ton of different symptoms and problems that no doctor could seem to figure out. Once I went gluten free, it took 2 weeks to get the diet straight and then another 2 weeks to start feeling better. I never opted to have a biopsy only because it would have taken more time, time that I didn't want to wait. ...
  9. Rice or popcorn cakes helped slightly. Almonds and fruit helped. mostly bland foods that were easy to make. I am now 19 weeks pregnant, so I am not really sick anymore. As long as I always had something in my stomach I was o.k. otherwise I would throw up. You'll get through it.
  10. I had two babies when I went undiagnosed. both turned out to be sickly and eventually all three of us were diagnosed with celiac at the same time. I did not have any major complications with either pregnancy, just the no energy thing & morning sickness. Both babies scored fine on the apgar after birth. it is normal to worry if you will be giving your...
  11. My 1st one i didn't show until I was 5 1/2 months. 2nd one I started to show at 2 1/2 months. 3rd I started to show at 5 weeks. I think it all depends on how fit you are pre-pregnancy.
  12. I am 15 weeks pregnant and have gained 10 lbs. With my first two pregnancies, I had undiagnosed celiac and only gained 25 lbs with each of them. I am very small, pre-pregnancy weight of 108 and have never had any problems with my weight, so this is very traumatic for me. Now that my celiac is under control, I hope I don't blow up like a balloon. I am busting...
  13. I agree that my food bill went through the roof when me and my two sons were diagnosed with celiac disease. Our entire family went gluten free, so it can get pricey. but, less eating out (only 2x per month) and less doctors visits and not buying Imodium, Pepto, & tums in bulk makes up for the extra money I now spend on food. also, now that my kids...
  14. Myself and both of my kids as well as other family members all have celiac disease. It is genetic, so technically it's possible for all the children in the family to get celiac sometime in their lives.
  15. My son also had the same thing. My youngest son tested positive for celiac, but the older on the test was inconclusive. Testing is not acurate for kids under 5. My two sons have done remarkable on the diet. IN one year my kids have each gained over 10 pounds!! If the retesting comes out negative, you can always try the diet for 30 days and then give him...
  16. I agree, both my children were breastfed & it hurt them more than it helped them. They unfortunately were born with celiac & it went undiagnosed for 20 months & 4 years, respectively. Once my babies were on formula only they did well. I first gave them solids at 6 months, but both refused to eat solids until 12 months. Now I know why, the gluten...
  17. you could get blood tested for celiac, but you must be on a gluten containing diet I believe for at least one week. If you feel better going on a gluten free diet, and don't want to get tested, just stick with it. It really depends on a personal preference. Some people are so glad to feel better that they don't care to be tested and just stick with the...
  18. From personal experience, yes gluten is passed in the breatmilk. Both of my sons were very fussy as infants and would not eat very much. I eliminated all the gassy causing foods my doctors told me to with no positive results. My babies were both failure to thrive, yet none of the doctors I went to could figure out what was wrong with them. They just told...
  19. My entire house is almost gluten-free. Everything is gluten-free with te exception of one loaf of bread, so my husband can make snadwiches for lunch. Myself and both kids are celiac. At first, it was very difficult when the kitchen was not gluten free. After about 2 weeks on the diet, I decided to make our house gluten-free. I thre out everything that...
  20. I agree, many people including relatives think celiac children are being deprived because they can't have cake, cookies, etc. They give them a bite here and there not thinking anything of it. They don't realize the child then gets sick from eating the cake, and since they don't have to take care of the child, it's no big deal. I think wearing a medical...
  21. My children did not have canker sores, but I had geographic tongue. This is basically many open sores on your tongue that never seem to heal. It is very painful. Going gluten free for almost one year has almost cured this problem. It comes & goes, but is getting better. As far as snacks. My kids love air popped popcorn with butter; cheese crisps...
  22. I have been gluten-free since July 2005, almost one year now. I too still experience the bloating with , brain fog, tiredness, & soreness all with no apparent cause. I have several accidental ingestions that takes me 1 week to recover. I have had celiac since I was born, so I realize that 29 years of damage will take awhile for my body to completely...
  23. I had celiac during both of my pregnancies, alhtough I did not know it yet. I gained only 20 pounds with both pregnancies, and both babies weighed 6 lbs 14 oz. This is within the normal weight for babies, but both did not nurse well, and I kept eliminating foods from my diet with no avail. I was sick the entire pregnancies, but no so sick that I had to...
  24. My mother is full Swedish, thus I am 1/2. My father's side is German, French, & Italian. I have olive skin, brown eyes, brown hair, & started going gray at 23!! Oval face shape. My mother, 2 sisters, myself, & both my children have celiac.

    ARCHIVED Aaarrrggghhh!

It just may take time for you to gain weight. When I was diagnosed with celiac, I started on the gluten free diet and within 2 weeks, I had lost 5 pounds. I am 5'3" and at the beginnnig of the diet I weighed 106. Within a few months, I had gained back the 5 pounds. I have been on the diet for 10 months now and have only gained 2 pounds. I do look healthier...
