ARCHIVED Question About Slow Cooker Sizes
karichelle replied to Buffheart's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I didn't really say not to use it to cook anything with sugar, just advised that it would burn...I guess I should have said, "If overcooked." Just watch it for the last couple of hours, and if you're trying out a new recipe do it on the weekend when you can watch it and see if you need to shave an hour or two off the time. I bought a digital timer programmable... -
ARCHIVED Tasterie Boxes
karichelle replied to LFitts's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I ordered the gluten-free/vegan signature box. I'm looking forward to receiving it. -
ARCHIVED Question About Slow Cooker Sizes
karichelle replied to Buffheart's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Today's slow cookers cook hotter than older ones. Anything with sugar will burn in a new one. It needs to be at least half full, closer to 3/4 to function optimally. I use my 5-qt most often, but I also have a 4-qt and a 1.5-qt, which I sadly need to replace because I made spaghetti and meatballs in it too many times and it has a gluteny film that won't come... -
ARCHIVED Question About Snacks For A Tween
karichelle replied to blmoreschi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Envirokidz bars are kind of like rice krispy treats. They have peanut butter ones and peanut butter chocolate drizzle...both good. Udi's has granola bars too but I haven't tried them. I also like the Van's snack bars - I buy them at Walmart. There's a cranberry almond one and a peanut butter chocolate chip. Can't remember what the third one is, maybe just... -
ARCHIVED Domino's Gluten Free Pizza
karichelle replied to phillysmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
With cereals that aren't marked gluten free even if they don't contain any obvious gluten ingredients, I always assume they are made on shared equipment. -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter
karichelle replied to jen9882's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Inulin can cause digestive upset for some people. I know it doesn't like me very much, and I have to be careful that I don't eat too many things that contain it in one day. If you're consuming quite a bit of it, that could be your culprit. -
ARCHIVED Making Food For Others
karichelle replied to Melissa.77's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It does sound like you're getting glutened by something -- I would start digging. Check for sources of cross contamination first. Pots that have had pasta cooked in them previously (I was reacting to mine because it had a white film inside that we could not scrub off that I can only assume is gluten from wheat pasta), strainers, anything porous. Check your... -
I was more thinking of ones given for allergic reactions, not the muscle kind. I've been taking one for the past 5 days (and unfortunately am still not sure of the source of the original reaction) and I definitely have a gnawing hunger. LOL
-
Are you taking any steroids? They can cause excess hunger and that "gnawing" feeling.

ARCHIVED Making Food For Others
karichelle replied to Melissa.77's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm just not entirely sure that caramel color or vanilla flavoring is the issue with the Torani syrups. The list of the ones that contain it isn't all inclusive of all of the tan or caramel-colored syrups or ones with vanilla flavor, for that matter. I'll just stay away from them -- I was just bringing it up as an example of gluten-containing ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Glutino " Poptarts"
karichelle replied to kareng's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They are SO good. I find them more like Toaster Strudel than a Pop Tart. -

Are you stating that Torani's website is out of date? If so, what is your source? Open Original Shared Link Under product-related questions. -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Unfiltered Organic Apple Juice
karichelle replied to Minstinguette's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Could it possibly be cross contamination from something else, and not related to the juice at all? If the only ingredient is apples and it wasn't made in a shared facility, it doesn't seem likely to be the juice. -
ARCHIVED Making Food For Others
karichelle replied to Melissa.77's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Exactly -- and it's the type of thing that makes me nervous about anything that lists "natural flavors." I read the label at the coffee shop, itched from it later, and found this on Torani's website. Reading the label did me no good. -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods Product Recommendations
karichelle replied to powerofpositivethinking's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Pick up some of the new Glutino toaster pastries...they're really good. Top shelf in the breakfast aisle at our store here. They also have a nice selection of Udi's and some bakery items. Eatpastry gluten-free refrigerated cookie dough. -
ARCHIVED Tyson Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Nuggets And Strips
karichelle replied to Alex J's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wish our Walmart had a gluten-free-ish section in the freezers. They don't. They do have a decent one on the shelves, but no Udi's bread or anything like that at my store. And no Van's waffles. There are a few Amy's meals that are with the Morningstar products and Lean Cuisines. -
ARCHIVED Making Food For Others
karichelle replied to Melissa.77's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Torani flavored syrups are one example of a gluten-containing ingredient being part of "natural flavors" and not being otherwise declared. The FAQ page on their website lists the following flavors as containing gluten: Bacon, Classic Caramel, Sugar Free Classic Caramel, Toasted Marshmallow and Sugar Free French Vanilla. Here are the ingredients for... -
ARCHIVED Disappointed At Chipotle - What Should I Expect?
karichelle replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
You might have a better response by telling them that you are allergic to wheat/flour (even though it doesn't tell the whole story) than by just stating that you have celiac. Your average fast casual food employee isn't likely to know what celiac is. That could have been part of their confusion. -
ARCHIVED Making Food For Others
karichelle replied to Melissa.77's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been made ill by ingredients hidden under natural flavors...barley malt in an herbal tea. They have to declare wheat but not barley, rye, or oats. -
ARCHIVED Cross Contimination Cause Itching?
karichelle replied to jamer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get itching with CC, but I went gluten-free before being tested so I don't know whether I am gluten sensitive or have a wheat allergy, I have symptoms that correspond to both. I need to do allergy testing at some point soon. -
ARCHIVED Mikes Hard Lemonade
karichelle replied to Vinturi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I let my husband drink the rest of mine when I went gluten-free. A malt beverage doesn't really seem like it can be gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Specialty Grill Has Chef Asking For Help
karichelle replied to Colleeney's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree that you need to tell him that you got sick. If he goes into this saying dishes are gluten free only because of the temperature they were cooked at, without worrying about cross contamination, he's going to make a lot of other people sick. Hopefully he'll be receptive to preventing CC the right way. -
Will he try spaghetti? Old Spaghetti Factory has been doing gluten-free pasta for several years.

ARCHIVED I Got Glutened, Quasi-On Purpose. Bad Cathy...
karichelle replied to clafran's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have no official diagnosis, as I went gluten-free before I knew that I needed to get tested first. I get very similar symptoms to what happened to you...feeling hot and flushed, and "hung over" in the morning....tired, headache, in a fog. But with the extra fun rash to go with them. So needless to say I will not be doing a gluten challenge. No compulsion... -
ARCHIVED Email From Conagra Foods
karichelle replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That one didn't contain dairy, which I do know I am sensitive to, and I'm not sensitive to corn or soy (not sure if it had soy in it or not). I can't really think of anything else it could be. Some kind of weird CC I guess.
