Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. I have non-celiac GS (double DQ1, subtype 6) and have no other problems whatsoever. If I get glutened, I can always trace it back to a gluten source. All my GI problems including 30-second notice D, almost constant gas, went away. My pain went away. I was in so much pain all the time that if I hadn't found out about celiac I was actually going to talk...
  2. Your symptoms sound very familiar. The 30-second notice D was what kept me practically trapped in my house for over a year (my family members thought I was faking or exagerating and wouldn't help me - they don't now and are great). Thank GOD for my best friend who believed every word I said and did everything she could to help, even though she works full...
  3. For me, the first sign is usually irritability. If I get upset about things that didn't happen recently. Like rehashing things that don't effect my life now, I'm pretty sure the rest of the symptoms will be coming soon. The last time I got glutened, I started getting mad all over again about a fight I had had with someone a year ago. Which was resolved...

ARCHIVED Recommend A Doctor In You State

If you post this as a new topic you'll have more of a chance of most people seeing it. A lot of people wouldn't necessarily visit this topic, and stories of bad or rude doctors in your area can be valuable as well. Nancy
  5. Screeeeeecchhhh....!!!!!! Did you just say there is a gluten-free Shake and Bake? No WAY!! Nancy
  6. I wondered about all this too. I do remember seeing a posting of a genetic test result where there was only one gene. It caught my eye because it seems like everyone has two. I think it was stated as HLA-DQxx , or something like that. This thread makes me think about some of the paleolithic diets, or Atkins or any of the other no carb, low carb,...
  7. That's a definite possibility too. Doesn't hurt to bring celiac up just in case. But, having a 4yo myself... I hope things turn out well for everyone involved. Nancy
  8. Ahhh.... It all makes sense now. Grr...
  9. If you feel comfortable saying what city is closest to you, someone may know of something there or nearby. The best/easiest thing to do is just eat things that are naturally gluten-free, and then experiment with replacement products such as breads, pizza crusts, cookies, etc. Other than that, I order a lot of stuff. It's the easiest, least time...
  10. I have a rice cooker that's specifically for use in the microwave. I haven't cooked rice any other way for years. It takes 15 minutes. The steam overflows though, and I just put a plate with a a few paper towels under it. I probably got it at either Target or Walmart. It looks like this one Open Original Shared Link
  11. Open Original Shared Link I emailed the newspaper about this, because reading the article it also says that she's vomiting, doesn't want to go to school, gets so upset that she's making herself physically ill, and is very quiet and clingy to the teacher when at school. I told them that she should probably at least be evaluated for celiac because...
  12. Although my 2.5yo son was never evaluated for autism his personality and behavior has changed dramatically in just a few months. I never thought much about my son not being very emotional, or having a preference for books rather than active play, or crying when his sister got too close or too touchy or too loud. In a playground environment, he would rather...
  13. Are you suggesting that leeches AREN'T gluten-free??? I'm going to have to rethink my HMO... But seriously folks... I think I read the same book. They said that during adolescence that the symptoms can lessen. I think at this point they're not sure if it's a true remission, where no celiac or intolerance is present and no damage...
  14. I swear, I think some of us should do a cross country trip just to smack some people upside the head. There is actually a member on here that posts occasionally who could be your sister. Her parents treat her the same way. Whatever happens, just know that you're not alone and we're always here for advice, support or just a vent. Nancy
  15. Marshmallows - Depends on the brand. In the US, we have Kraft, who will disclose any allergen, so if no gluten is listed, it's fine. Do you have some brand names that someone may have some info on? Wheat starch - Not gluten-free. I have heard that in Europe it's considered gluten-free. But Americans visiting Europe for a celiac convention of some...
  16. That's what I was going to suggest too. A small plastic storage box with a few things would make things so much easier for you. I don't know what it is about it, but for some reason it's very (VERY) common for a person with celiac to deal with either not being believed, called paranoid, or a hypochondriac by family and/or friends. I don't know why...
  17. Oh man! I'm sorry you got zapped. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. You might want to contact the restaurant and talk to the manager and suggest a refresher course for the staff. I know how easy it is for me to gluten myself, so I never get too upset with someone who doesn't live with it every day. But they may need a reminder of how microsensitive...
  18. Georgie, your friend may be gluten intolerant, which is what I am. My blood test and my biopsy were BOTH negative, but when I tried the gluten-free diet in an attempt to get rid of my celiac-type symptoms, it worked like a charm. GI symptoms, pain, headaches, exhaustion, insomnia, etc. all went away like someone flipped a switch. My doctor was blown away...
  19. I think that getting away from that pizza place will be a huge difference. I have a feeling that that will end up being a big thing. And definitely GO to Mexico! One semester isn't going to hurt a thing. And your health is so much more important. Just think of how much better your grades are going to be once you feel healthier. Nancy
  20. Yahoo Answers is an area of yahoo where a person can ask a question, then whoever wants to can answer it. After several people have answered, the asker can choose the best answer. After the best answer is chosen, it's closed to new answers. If you do an advanced search, you can filter it to show just open questions. I did a search and found...
  21. I tossed a few plastic plates that were really scratched but things like measuring cups that have very smooth surface I kept with no problems. Some plastic spoons and such didn't have any scratches or crevices that would hold anything. Others were pretty beat up. I would just take it on an item-by-item basis. What I did at first was buy just a...
  22. Another cryer here... Give them extra hugs and thanks from us for being such wonderful people. Nancy
  23. I like Jasmine rice. It has a really nice smell. After we have dinner that we've had rice with, for dessert I make a bowl of rice with butter and sprinkle sugar on it. Never thought to do it as breakfast as a sub for oatmeal. That's a great idea. Nancy
  24. Oh Nini... I'm so sorry you're having such an awful day. Hugs.. Nancy
  25. The biggest problem with oats is that there is almost always cross contamination with wheat in the milling process. So you can't just get Quaker oats. You have to get either oats from a company that makes only gluten free oats, such as glutenfreeoats.com, or one of the irish or scottish oats brands (not familiar with these but maybe someone can give you...
