  1. gfp - thanks. I will ease out of the friendship which will be easy because my busiest time of year with work is about to start. I don't want to burn any bridges in case my friend does one day decides to get serious about her health. I'm glad to hear about your friend - that is great news.
  2. Well some in group don't actually trust the gov't so much......one got in trouble with IRS when some group convinced him that paying income tax is not a requirement and the IRS is an illegal organization. But you did give me a good idea. I'll print off some info from the University of Chicago Celiac site. It's simple enough for anyone to understand. Thanks...
  3. Oh Jegstar - I am so sorry to hear about your brother. We know someone who's diabetic and now he can't feel his feet anymore and fell with my nephew so he's now not allowed to pick up his own grandkids except when sitting down. That is what prompted me to get real about my friend. I mean when she became diabetic when told how not to and then didn't tell me...
  4. I thought of something else on this subject. Have any of you been to a family reunion with extended family members since your dx and if so, how did you broach the subject of Celiac. I don't want to bore everyone to tears about gluten but I'll have to eat my own food so it's not like the subject will not come up. I'd like to use this opportunity to educate...
  5. That is a great idea when you have to go somewhere that can't accomodate your dietary needs. Thanks for that idea that I doubt I would have thought of. If someone took their own food to the Four Seasons it would not be well recieved I'm afraid since they can offer safe gluten free food, for any meal there actually. I can't wait to go back for dinner now!
  6. Vincent - the cake is precious just like your little boy. Belated happy b-day to that cutie pie!
  7. Jegstar - all very thoughful tips but I guess I should have clarified that now that I am in a very secure place with regards to my new lifestyle, I can no longer sit back and watch this person slowly poisoning herself with food. I've ignored it for 7 years and I just can't do it anymore. If I were getting paid I could not remember all the ailments she has...
  8. Okay - so I'm late in posting about our event last week but better late than never, right - lol?! Okay up front I must say that there are three Sugo restaurants in the Metro Atlanta area - only the original one in clock Tower shopping center on S. Atlanta rd. in Roswell can accomodate us (that we know of). This place understands what gluten is and about cc...
  9. In my book from Triumph ( which I do not recommend buying) they list a place call The Back Porch in Destin. So I posted that for someone on another Celiac site and she reported back that they didnt' know what gluten was a The Back Porch - they had a new chef. Sorry not to have better news. I'm from that area of the state (left over 20 years ago) and to say...
  10. Nantzie - congratulations to you! I'm going to tell my Celiac mother about you. She is overweight (so everyone told her no way she had Celiac). I'd like to encourage her that eventually she will get back to a healthy weight if she sticks to the diet. I think anyone can benefit from the gluten free diet, gluten intolerant or not. It's a big fad in parts of...
  11. For those of you who had to move on from friends that do not fit into your new gluten free life anymore, what did you do or say if anything? I feel like a huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders now that I've admitted I can't continue a (formerly) wonderful friendship with a dear friend of over 7 years. Still I'm waiting for the sadness and realize it...
  12. People in general don't like change. Maybe more than half the population has problems with emotional eating. Those people can not dream of giving up one food they love, much less many. My own brother lives on beer and pizza and he's 34 freakin' years old, 9 years my junior. I have accepted the fact that I may live to bury him. When he was little he had a...
  13. I take Airborne if I'm going to be around my neices/nephews. We have used it since hearing about it on Oprah and was thrilled to find it's gluten free after my dx. It's really good when you have to fly and be trapped in a box with millions of germs. I think it works for us anyway. Regarding the Celiac celebrity issue, something just happened last week...
  14. For my biopsy, I requested to be put out completely and my jerk (now ex) doctor gave me something called conscious sedation. That meant it paralyzed me so that I could not move but I could see/hear. It was awful though not painful in the least. Everyone else I've met that had the biopsy was put all the way out for the 15 minute procedure. There is no prep...
  15. Sounds great but I'll post for the lazy cooks out there. Get Pamela's choc. chip cookie mix (also makes pan bars) and then try really hard not to gorge yourself on them. I bought some for an upcoming family reunion and I'm not sure I can keep away from them for a whole month! They are the best choc. chip cookies I've had in life - gluten or no gluten! ...
  16. Dr. Cynthia Rudert of Atlanta (only Celiac doc in SE) says she never asks a paitent to do a challenge if it makes them too sick. She thinks that is a barbaric practice as a matter of fact. Or she might have said inhumane but in any case, she says it's not necessary if you know gluten is the culprit.
  17. Sounds great! I made a chicken version last week. I was lazy and used McCormicks enchilada sauce mix and I layered the seasoned chicken over the corn tortillas, then put in cheese and more tortillas and so on. Next time I'd add some black beans but I didn't have any handy. It was so much easier than rolling out the enchiladas which I didn't have time for...
  18. I'm thrilled to report that my gluten free afternoon tea experience was more than I could have hoped for. After coresponding with the Executive Chef there explaining that I understood why he didn't offer gluten free scones as he does not get a call for many gluten free tea services, I advised him to buy them from Whole Foods in the freezer and serve as needed...
  19. Well my root canal is finally complete. It required a permanent metal rod which I've never heard of but they assure me it's normal. I meet the holistic dentist later this week so we'll see what he thinks. Then one of the two will do my crown. I bought myself a month to figure out who I want to do it.
  20. There is no phone number to call them BUT Gwinnettt Co. sent me a letter stating that indeed they can NOT feed me lunch (like they do other jurors) so I should bring my own food and I can use their fridge to store it. Maybe the work card will work for me next week when I show up with my business license.
  21. Well someone did something wrong or I'm sure I would not be much worse off than when I started. I'm probably going to Nisla after the MRI. It is worth a try before spending even more money on co-pays which to date are almost $500 for nothing. Well I mean I paid that to get worse.
  22. Okay - the PT did not doo much in the way of testing that I could tell. She did a couple of times do some manual therapy where she was slowly forcing my arm up and she massaged the area of the shoulder really hard so it hurt. Before second round of PT sessions the doc gave me a cort. shot which did nothing and was not even sore the next day. I asked him about...
  23. Zell - welcome to the board. This site has saved my life literally. If it were not for helpful people on here I would still be eating gluten today, never having pushed for the biopsy. Regarding your wife, I totally understand. When I read about that I thought it sounded 'pretty out there' but then it happened to me. That proved the cc issue is real to my...
  24. gfp - she is destructive but mostly to herself. When I ate gluten, I ignored what she was doing and now I can't. I'd love it if she lost half her weight and won an award like your friend - that is terrific! Tarnalberry - yes as I rambled on I didn't explain it's just the one person that is the issue. As a matter of fact, if others in my life didn't bend...
  25. yes gfp - of course you are right. Tarnalberry - you make some very good and valid points. But other friends invite me to parties and ask what gluten free ricipe website they can go to so they can have things for me to eat. And none of them consider themselves a gourmet cook like the friend I'm writing about. I know it doesn't matter now but the incidents...
