ARCHIVED What's For Dinner Tonight?
floridanative replied to ilmotherof2's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks jennyj. I was thinking I could use them with strong cheeses when you don't want the cracker to compete with the cheese flavor. I think I'll pick some up this weekend. Do you mind sharing your recipe for salsa? Now that I'm cooking I need recipes for practically everything. -
ARCHIVED Question About Lab Results
floridanative replied to mythreesuns's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well is seems at least your labs don't indicate Celiac but this could easily be a false negative which I think happens in 20% of cases. First off, you have to really have been sick for a while for the antibodies to show up on the blood tests. Some people have positive biopsy for Celiac and never have the same for blood work. Also, I've been told in more then... -
ARCHIVED What's For Dinner Tonight?
floridanative replied to ilmotherof2's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Left over gluten-free crabcakes. Used Hol*Grain brand breadcrumbs which don't taste like much (made from rice) alone but worked great for this recipe. I prefer using gluten-free garlic crisps for breadcrumbs but I was out and I order them from TN. They are better than Pep. Farm stuffing mix. Has anyone tried the Hol*Grain rice crackers? They have them... -
ARCHIVED Rebuilding A Rectum
floridanative replied to floridanative's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Okay - good then. Guess I just look at the world through Celiac colored glasses now - lol! This woman is in her early 40's but since I've never had kids, I did not know this could happen with childbirth. That's just awful. Thanks for alleviating my concerns. -
I have never heard of someone having surgery to rebuild their rectum until today. A client of mine (owner of company I work with) is having such surgery and then will be in recovery for a few months. The person who told me did so in an e-mail and the explanation given her was the woman had trouble giving birth and got messed up down there. Could this be related...

ARCHIVED I'm Gluten-free, But I'm So Glad I Don't Have To Give Up....
floridanative replied to RunnerNYC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
popcorn, cheese and pickles - not necessarily in that order. -
ARCHIVED Found A New Food
floridanative replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for posting about the fish sticks. I still haven't found the breadless coating chicken that Publix 'supposedly' carries. I don't know where there is a ShopRite around here but I'll have to investigate. I also found another awesome gluten-free product. It's a kit kat type bar made by Schar. They also make my fave gluten-free pasta but their stuff... -
ARCHIVED How Does Jury Duty Work?
floridanative replied to floridanative's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well I had my first day of jury duty today and it was ridiculous (very inefficient system IMHO). I was in the very last group called in for a pool to choose a jury and they kept us until almost 1 pm without a lunch break. When we got a 10 minute break before they announced the jury picked I scarfed down some Ener-G pretzels. Then when I did not get picked... -
ARCHIVED Any Celiacs From Gainesville, Florida?
floridanative replied to eleep's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm surprised they dont' have a group there. I go there to see DH's family every year and I'd always ask local groups where I should eat in their town. We almost always go to Hops and some place called Ashleys which is sort of a dive but I've been to neither since my dx. I think you can get help starting a group from www.csa.org (not sure of address). Best... -
ARCHIVED *w O W* A Whole Year gluten-free!
floridanative replied to StrongerToday's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
StrongerToday - congratulations! That is wonderful for you. Great job sticking with it! I don't know how this is but statistics say that only 30-40% of people who are told to go gluten free for medical reasons actually do it without purposefully cheating. So you should give yourself a huge pat on the back and have a lovely gluten free treat! Jerseyangle... -
Jules - welcome to the club. When my first GI mentioned Celiac Sprue to me last September I went home and googled it and thought it was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard of. Quickly I figured out this was real and worst of all, I could have it. Then when I got my dx this past January, I read all about cross contamination and thought - well that is...

ARCHIVED Why Don't People 'get It'?
floridanative replied to floridanative's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well gfp makes a good point. I don't want to act in haste and maybe I'm not ready to deal with this just yet. As my busy time of year starts in two weeks and last through the end of the year, I could wait until Jan. before really having to decide to move on which at this particular moment seems like the right thing to do for me. And I really think a short... -
ARCHIVED Why Don't People 'get It'?
floridanative replied to floridanative's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Tarnalberry - I think you pretty much get the picture regarding my feelings. I did want to blame her for not being more supportive of my new lifestyle and that would make her the 'bad guy'. When I looked deeper of course, the reality was that I can not continue to watch her self destruct with food. She gets a new doctor added to her list of doctors about... -
ARCHIVED Foods By George Pizza....
floridanative replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't imagine why I can't find this product when I do a search on here, but I couldn't so here is the info - sorry if this is a repeat of another thread. Foods by George gluten-free pizza won a reg. food show contest as best new product a couple of years ago. It was a specialty food show, not a gluten free one. Anyway, I finally tried some this week... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone On Here Forget That They Have celiac disease Most Of The Time?
floridanative replied to em2005's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know that I really forget it, I'm just not thinking about it that much anymore. I know what I have to do to eat at home and out safely and I do it. It's much easier now than when I started. I'm still not used to how others seem to think that not eating wheat items is the end of the world....guess I never knew how many people were out there with serious... -
ARCHIVED Met With Gastro Doc For 1st Time
floridanative replied to BostonCeliac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The GI that did my biopsy did not take but two samples....found out after the fact that 6-8 are needed when looking for Celiac evidence. This guy called up to say I had it (luckily both areas were damaged and badly at that) and then he actually told me that he hated to prescribe the gluten-free diet to me since I don't have GI issues, just anemia........... -
ARCHIVED Who Is On Your Not-my-friend List?
floridanative replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Quaker because after eating their quick grits twice and getting bloated both times, I finally called them even though clearly their label indicated no possible gluten. This was before I knew about cc at factories. So their response was to almost yell at me saying if I have Celiac I can NOT eat any of their products. With that kind of attitude I said no problem... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Heard Of Zonulin?
floridanative replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm in the wait a good ten years crowd and by that time, I'll be 55 assuming the drug will be out in two years. However, I know others who'll be first in line to take it - my own Mother for instance. So I'll know what her reaction is to it at least. Personally I'd rather just eat healthy and I don't think that includes eating a lot of wheat, for anyone. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Get Angry At Having This Illness?
floridanative replied to sillyyak's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not angry and consider my swift diagnosis a true blessing. But I'm angry that my Mother was 'stolen' from us for almost 20 years due to undisgnosed Celiac. DH could not believe the woman my Mother was when he met her, was the same person who raised me. She was so negative, so scared of life really, she was simply not the Mother I knew. My sister I discussed... -
ARCHIVED Welcome "newbies", Thank You "oldies"
floridanative replied to frustratedneicey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Denise - thank you so much for your post. I too felt the same way when someone (not Tarnalberry) told me when I asked about dining out that my life of dining out and travel was over. In the words of Jon Stewart - "whaaaaaaaa???!!" If I'd listened to them I would have missed the vacation of a lifetime this past May! In fairness it is easier and more fun to... -
ARCHIVED Does Wine Have Gluten In It?
floridanative replied to mythreesuns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Only some Port wines contain gluten, or so I found when I researched this subject. If you order a cosmo out you'll have to question the brands to make sure they are safe but with wine - as long as it's not Port you should be safe. And not all Ports contain gluten so if you like them, you can contact the winemaker for details. -
ARCHIVED Breaking News: Routine Screening For Celiac Disease Not Always Beneficial
floridanative replied to hineini's topic in Publications & Publicity
This study is very disturbing. I'd love to know why there is such a backlash in the US to admitting this is an issue and needs to be dealt with. I for one, do not think the number is going to stay at 1 in 100 (have Celiac)and that is probably suspected by the National Wheat Assoc. Besides the phama companies, they stand to lose a lot of money if everyone... -
ARCHIVED Seeking Primary Care Dr In San Antonio (celiac Knowledgeable)
floridanative replied to Lady Buchanan's topic in Doctors
Go to www.chickenparadise.com. The woman who owns/runs this B&B in San Antonio runs the Celiac support group there. Her name is Ann and you can e-mail her from her site. She's an angel and will be glad to help you. Good luck to your Mother. I had a heck of time gettng my own Mother dx'd in FL but I finally got it done. -
ARCHIVED Results Received Noooooooo!
floridanative replied to Mayflowers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the club. I'd like to add that though Tinkyada pasta tastes fine to me - I much prefer the corn, rice, soy blend made by two Italian companies. Bi-Aglut is my fave with Dr. Schar coming in as a close second. I've only found them online - www.shopbydiet.com and a few other sites carry them. Schar crackers fooled my gluten eating freinds. Seven months... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Convince My Family?
floridanative replied to ElizabethN's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
gfp - You are a genius! Of course, that is an excellent idea for DH's family since at least one of them doesn't trust the government in the first place. And interestingly he works for Hunt's and therefore had heard of gluten and said it was in everything and how hard it must be for me to avoid it. Now I'm actually excited about the reunion. Maybe I can educate...
