ARCHIVED I Think I'm Getting Better...
floridanative replied to floridanative's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm odd man out on Namaste - think their vanilla cake was the worst gluten-free thing I've had to date. I made it right. I just don't like something in it. I love Pamela's choc. chip mix (which only I can have) and I love 123GF brand. I think I'll e-mail them and see if they have an idea of how to make their pan bars choc, without applesauce or pumkin. I... -
ARCHIVED I Think I'm Getting Better...

I know - until I met my hubby I'd never heard of such a strange allergy. But trust me - even if he's the only one in the world with it - it's real. Learned the hard way when he was less fearful and we had some choc. dessert at Hard Rock in Vegas - 12 years ago. Well I won't go into the gory details but I will say that I did not enjoy driving almost the whole... -
Gosh - it's interesting that some of you also react to the Outback brownie dessert. Maybe it's too rich for me or maybe there is something in ice cream bothering me. I had lots of pecans in a coffee cake Sat. - they never bother me. I'm sure the chicken wasn't the issue since I ate the leftovers - twice - with no reaction. But what is in ice cream that it...

ARCHIVED I Think I'm Getting Better...
floridanative replied to floridanative's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks! I did enjoy my b-day - took the day off and went to the pool, then showered and went to the movie (Devil Wears Prada - love it!) and then we went to the Braves game that night. Well that part wasn't so great - we got killed. Braves are terrible this year. -
ARCHIVED Gma This Morning
floridanative replied to floridanative's topic in Publications & Publicity
Okay - I'm sure it was the cin. buns she mentioned as being wheat free and gluten free. I don't think I was dreaming. I'm going to try and e-mail Sarah and see if I heard her correctly or not. Thanks for posting the list - see the word free in the cin. buns? That's why I'm thinking that's it. I'll post a response if I get one. -
ARCHIVED I Think I'm Getting Better...
floridanative replied to floridanative's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Absolutely! I actually made cupcakes from the Down & Rogers mix but they were out of vanilla and they were great - with choc. chips/coconut added. Did not care for the plain batch I made from first box. But you are just the person (Tiffany) to ask this. I had Pamela's choc. chip pan bars at a support group meeting Sat. and I remembered Pamela's browines... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac...now What?
floridanative replied to Irishgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you had a biopsied dx of Celiac you can get a free gluten free goodie basket from the Celiac Center at the University of Chicago. Go to www.celiacdisease.net and you'll be able to find their phone #. When mine came I cried - it was such a sight for gluten deprived eyes! Also, I could not have gotten through this new diet without the Clan Thomspon software... -
Some of you know that I have had the hardest time with how people treat me differently now....well how one close friend in particular has been very unsupportive since my dx. Well on Sunday she gave me a belated b-day gift and the card in the bag (which she made me open in front of her) had a drawing of four darling b-day cakes on it. At first I thought why...

ARCHIVED I Am 26 And Just Diagnosed With Celiac
floridanative replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome Heidi - just six months after my dx I feel better than ever and I'm still learning about this gluten free way of life. It's more than a diet really. But it does get easier with time. In my case I wanted to know everything I needed to like yesterday. That was not possible so I had to slow down and take my time, doing the research, joining a support... -
In Orlando have her try Seasons 52. They have a gluten free menu, don't serve bread but offer low cal. healthy gourmet dining. They will open in Perimeter and Buckhead in Atlanta this year.

ARCHIVED Best Gluten Free Food
floridanative replied to lapetit8's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I heard this pizza won some award at a food show - but it was not a gluten free food show - so they must be really good. Thanks for reminding me about them. I was not gluten free yet when I read about the product before and I'd forgotten all about it. -
I had the tv on GMA ealier but was not really watching it and I could swear that Sarah (food contributor) said that some cinnamon buns were wheat free and gluten free. She went quickly on to the next thing so I don't know if I misheard her or not. Nothing else on the table was mentioned as gluten free. Did anyone else see this and if so, is that what she...

ARCHIVED Centrum And Gluten
floridanative replied to ilovechocolate's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't take Centrum anymore but when I was dx'd I was taking the reg. multivitamin. When I called them to check on the gluten-free status of that item they made me read everything on the bottle and then told me I could not have it. Then they called back an hour later to say that I could have it and they were sorry for the confusion. I kept taking it until... -
I forgot I had left overs from last night so I had the chicken for lunch - no reaction. Had the potato for dinner - so far no reaction to that either. I think it had to be something with the dressing or the salad - having croutons in the salad that were picked out or cc'd dressing. Or maybe they put the shrimp app. on the toast and then took it off and put...

ARCHIVED Spain And Portugal
floridanative replied to LRgirl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Usually the plane is not where the food restictions lie. You can bring most anything to eat on the plane. You just can't take produce into the country you're visiting. This is true even of CA visits here. I took tons of food on vacation (didn't need a lot of it as it turned out) but no produce was allowed in Brittian. I took crackers, dressing packets, energy... -
ARCHIVED Centrum And Gluten
floridanative replied to ilovechocolate's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was told on Sat. by a rep. from a Celiac Awareness website that Mannitol is sugar so it seems as though the makers of Centrum do not even know what is and is not gluten. She does not think the product in question actually contains gluten. -
My B12 def. cause me to get dizzy, fall down and run into things at the very end before my dx. Turned out my B12 level was around 300 which in most cases docs consider normal though new studies show levels under 400 to be dangerous. As we all know most docs barely have time to see all their patients, much less read up on the latest studies of anything. In...

I do always have their ranch dressing that is supposed to be gluten-free and I've never gotten sick. However, there's a first time for everything so maybe a crouton did get into the tub of dressing. I'm not going to worry about it since in fairness I'm not going back since I prefer Bugaboo if I want steak or even chicken. I was just curious to make sure...
-
No - thank goodness I'm not sestive to anything but gluten - right now anyway. If I were I'd be sick as a dog every day of my life! That said, no one at this Outback seems older than 12 - I know they are older they just seem very young because they are. At Carraba's, Bugaboo Creek and PF Changs I have never asked for a manager, and I've never gotten sick...
-
No - since they were so dead (very odd for Outback) I didn't bother talking to the manager but obviously I should have. But for me, if I need to talk to a manager, I'd prefer going somewhere more upscale. I thought the point of going where they have a gluten free menu was that they know what they are doing when it comes to gluten but apparently that's not...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Naturals Products
floridanative posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just had some browies from this line on Sat. and they were awesome. The person who brought them to the meeting moved from NJ where they sell the line in some stores locally. Website is www.gfnfoods.com. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has tried the pizza crust mix and if so, did you like it? The lady said it was much better than Chebe or anything other... -
Okay - I went finally went into my local Outback to eat. I have not eaten inside before, just picked up a few to go orders - never had dessert, never got sick. I had a coupon that was about to expire so I had to use it or lose it. We had the gluten-free shrimp app., salad, a grilled chicken item with a baked potato and the thunder whatever dessert. My husband...

Sorry I missed this....on vacation when you posted. We eat out about once a week and there are the usual chains but I've found the higher end places are much more Celiac aware than most chain places they supposedly know what gluten is.

ARCHIVED The Gluten Free Bakery In Chatanogga?
floridanative replied to skinnyminny's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's called Great Harvest Bread Co. (www.chattanoogabreads.com). The location on E. Brainerd only is a ded. gluten free bakery. I picked up a huge order last weekend of French baguettes, white bread and strudel (coffee cake) but my cookies were not ready so I couldn't get them . The baker there has Celiac and she's awesome. She now has a peach rubarb cobler...
