  1. First of all - I'd like to say how sorry I am that you have a friend that would treat you that way. Shocked does not really cover how I felt reading your words. But I agree with a couple of other posters here. I think there must be some health issue you friend needs to address for herself and she is not willing to do so. Is she overweight maybe? The only...
  2. Just wondering if anyone has ordered from this place before? They bake both reg. and gluten-free breads but clean the lines on Sat. to bake gluten-free items on Sunday. They regularly test for gluten and have not found any according to the owner. Whole Foods Bakehouse used to do that for a while before getting a ded. facility and when doing so they ran out...
  3. That is soooooooooo thoughtful of you to care to feed your SIL safely and go to the trouble to find out how to do so. My own SIL is as thoughtful but that's more than I can say for most of my own family. One piece of advice I have is that if your SIL says she can't eat something - don't question her as to why. She probably gets annoyed when people do that...
  4. Thanks for the info on the kids cereals being gluten-free. Those are mosly too sweet for me though. But they might work as a sweet snack for me. I'm always looking for easy things to keep in baggies in case of emergency hunger when no safe food is in sight.
  5. I'm not a supertaster but a supersmeller like some others of you. I know when the garbage in my friends houses smells...before they do. Of course I'm polite and don't tell them so - lol! Twice I had a gas leak due to an idiot plumber installing a new hot water heater incorrectly. Both times I called the gas company my husband thought the gas company was going...
  6. I have heard that a few mainstream cereals are gluten free so I was perusing Kellogg's site to see if they had any. I went into a seach part of their site and put in 'gluten free' which brings up the question 'do you have any gluten free products'. That page lists three items I've never heard as gluten free. Below that they list Corn Pops and Rice Crispies...
  7. I'm confused about Cover Girl then. Aren't they owned by Proctor and Gamble who sent many of us a form letter stating that they could not tell us what products in any of the cosmetic lines were gluten free? How did you get someone to tell you the Cover Girl Outlast l/s is gluten free?
  8. The only iron I've had success with is Slow-Fe. I do take Benfiber to counteract the side effects of it however. I started with my stores down at 5 - today the nurse called to tell me it's now at 52. It was at 52 two months ago so I guess it's slow going. I've been on the iron pills for over a year but gluten free only 5 months. The doc wants me to stay on...
  9. I never miss a cleaning and last year right after I was dx'd with anemia, I was told by the dentist I needed a root canal. So I had that and then another cleaning last month now shows two more cavities...I hope this will be the end of my teeth problems since I've been gluten free for 5 months now and everything else has improved to the point that I never...
  10. Point taken eKatherine - and know that I do love to eat too. But I guess I know others who let's say maybe eat to stuff their feelings down and there is no way they could imagine not ever having a Krispy Kreme doughnut again - lol! The classic 'when food is love' types. For those people I do think a gluten free diet seems liks a death sentence. As someone...
  11. There is only one fast food item I know is gluten free and that's a Wendy's baked potato that I order uncut. That way, unless I eat the skin (I don't when out) I know I'm not getting sick from the potato. Now a burger there without the bun...that's another story.
  12. For those of you who understand supplements - my pcp told me I have to take 1000mg a day of the Oscal and that my numers on the scan are not high enough to warrant a calcium rx (yea!) but I'm taking magnesium too so I guess I have to take 2 of those with the 2 500mg Oscal pills. The magnesium I bought is a cheap gluten-free drugstore brand and it starts crumbling...
  13. You make a good point and I find that many people think food is so important (they live to eat, instead of eating to live) that they can't imagine being on a gluten free diet. Heck I've been trying to lose that 'last five pounds' for 10 tears or so and if I knew before a gluten free diet would do the trick (getting rid of imflamed belly) then I would have...
  14. Thanks to all for making such good points. This friend was told to do certain things to stay healtly which did involve food guidelines that she did not do so well with, so she developed a major health issue that the Dr. told her could be avoided if she'd stick to the plan....I didn't think about that until reading all your thoughful posts. Yes I'd agree she...
  15. You are so right!!! That's so funny to me. I hope I'm not like that when I'm older. I think that's a boring way to live. But I do stick to ordering the same thing in places when eating out - even before going gluten-free - so I'm boring in my own way I guess - lol!
  16. That's exactly what I was thinking Ursula. Guess it's a good thing that this friendship does not revolve around food. We did used to do the afternoon tea at the Four Seasons probably twice a year but that was all. So since I can't do 'tea' with her anymore as the food is nothing but gluten, I won't be embarrassing her when dining out.
  17. I know I can be overlysensitive at times and I feel that I'm doing so about this comment but I keep wondering why my friend said it. It really didn't make much sense to me. My parents got back from a cruise recently and the ship Chef fed my Celiac Moher fine except he kept insisted she could eat barley soup - of course each time it was offered she declined...
  18. When I was dx'd in Jan of this year, I thought it would be impossible to learn all the nuances of the gluten free diet/lifestyle. Five months later I still learn something new each time I meet with my support group which is why I make those meetings a priority right now. It takes a while to find out what is good adice and what is a Celiac myth.... For...
  19. B12 deficiency causes dizziness for some - it did for me. Once I went off gluten and added a B12 otc supplement all my neuro sypmtoms went away. I'm getting my B12 level tested tomorrow along with my iron so I can try and stop taking both since I'm now absorbing nutrients. Also, Dr. Rudert (Celiac expert in Atlanta) said that not drinking enough water causes...
  20. For some reason there is not a Bonefish Grill in Atlanta. We were in FL last weekend and I saw one about a mile from my parents house. We were going to go to Carabba's for dinner one night but I switched to Bonefish Grill since I wanted to try a new place. I had mahi mahi with lemon butter sauce, mashed potatoes and a salad. Forgot what appetizer we had but...
  21. I e-mailed Dr. Hyman as well as Barbara Walters. I asked her why they bothered to have the guy on when they didn't let him get a word in edgewise and said if they'd let him speak and get a few statements completed he could have helped thousands of people who are sick and doctors can't figure out why.
  22. My shoulder injury (impingement) is much worse now after going to PT for three months, using ultrasound there and doing home excercises daily. Well for the first month I got better, then it just got worse and I do not remember doing anything to hurt it. My PT says more PT now will not work and I need a cortisone shot to loosen up my muscle. I'm scared to...
  23. Patti - I have no idea what Elizabeth is so scared of except her show advertizers which pay her salary. I just googled the book and the Dr. who was on today has a website - www.unltrametablism.com which I'm pretty sure he did not get to mention today. Anyway, he has a little audio pc. you can click on to hear but it's nothing much. His diet is basically...
  24. Patti - I agree with everything in your rant (lol). It seemed as though at least everyone but Elizabeth was totally against even having this guy on the show but I wonder why.... I saw the nod you spoke up between the doc and Elizabeth too. I don't know why she can't just come out and admit why she's gluten free. Im also going to e-mail the show and let them...
  25. Where my sister lives, there is not ONE doctor in the entire town who knows any current info on Celiac. My onw Celiac Mother is supposed to have a biopsy late this month when she'll have been gluten free for over three months.....at least the diet is working for her so I don't think she'll go back to gluten when he tells her she doesn't have Celiac - blookwork...
