  1. Don't know of him but Dr. Peter Green at Columbia Univ. Medical Center treats over 2000 Celiacs from around the world in NYC.
  2. I feel great on the diet, never better as an adult really. But dizziness could be a symptom of B12 deficiency so get that checked if you didn't already. Or also if you don't drink enough water you can get dizzy. My B12 def. was not caught until after I went off gluten, by then I'd fallend down my own stairs twice in 10 days, which led to shoulder injury for...
  3. I mostly felt fatiqued due to anemia so I thought it would be hard for me to stay on the diet. But then when my stomach inflamation was gone in two weeks (didn't know it was inflamed) I loved the fact that I had a waist. Then when I had more energy in another two weeks I was just thrilled. Also, I started requiring an hour less sleep (8, not 9 hours) and...
  4. Well my note to the Today show was directed to Lester and I signed it a disappointed viewer as well. I also told him if he wants to do an informed segment on Celiac disease, he should contact the Columbia University Celiac program and Dr. Peter Green. I mean if they did that, they probably would not have to put Dr. Green up in a hotel as they would others...
  5. Meg - thanks for posting that link as I do think it's a good idea since we can't all read every thread on here and have a life too! Also important to note that Dr. Green's group has a Celiac seminar this Nov. in NYC. I can't attend this year but I'm sure some of you in NYC may want to check it out. The doctors go to one part of the seminar and patients go...
  6. I'd like to share my experience with GFL magazine. I ordered it in Jan. and got the Fall issue within two weeks. As of today, I have yet to get the Winter issue and it was 80 degrees here yesterday. I have e-mailed the company twice and twice they apologized for being late with the Winter issue. I finally called Visa to contest 75% of my yearly subs. rate...
  7. The Today Show just had a mac & cheese taste comparison segment. I almost fell off my chair when I saw Annie's gluten free box on the table but the woman who was going over them all just said that's for people with a wheat allergy and then Lester said he never likes anything that has 'something free' on the package as it's never that good. It was ridiculous...
  8. Same here but in my case I always slept well....just for too long and it took me about 1 1/2 hours to fully wake up. When I posted about sleeping aids above I guess I should have stated that I took those very raely while on gluten. When I went off gluten after about two weeks I started waking up when the alarm went off OR even a little before it did. My husband...
  9. I too take Benadryll (or Sominex OTC). Two years ago my ex doc gave me 30 Ambien and I took about 12 before seeing a Neurologist for shingles pain. He made me go off the Ambien that night and I was already adicted to it. I did not sleep for five nights and it was the worst week of my life. I was still in pain as I had to step up on Neuronton for nerve pain...
  10. Jnkmnky- good for you! I agree - if someone doesn't respect your disease - for any reason - it's probably best to rid them from your life if possible. Life is too short to be with people that don't care about your needs. I still say a LOT of people want to think Celiac isn't real when they themselves have symptoms that might worry them that they could...
  11. Amanda - that is funny about your Dad saying he has the so-and-so stomach. That is what Dr. Rudert said lots of families do. They have GI issues and don't of course know it's actually due to undx'd Celiac. Keep us posted about your Dad. I'd bet he indeed has Celiac.
  12. Thanks for the laugh!!!!! Too hysterical!!! Thanks for the info about Clayton GA kimjoy24 - never been there and now I'll never go..to eat anyway! I know this is for ignorant server posts (as I started it) but I have to share that today I took my own rice pasta into the Old Spag. Factory in downtown Atlanta. I also took my own dressing even though...
  13. These are great and where in N. Ga were you anyway? I don't want to go there.... I forgot one about Ted's Montanna Grill. I did not go to the meetup.com dinner (group of Celiacs that meet once a month to dine gluten free around town) when they went to Ted's but this is what happened, according to our group leader. She as usual put together the menu for...
  14. I thought it would be fun for everyone to list some of the things servers do that are pretty dumb. So far I have not run into such a server but in fairness I am usually paying a premium when I eat out which I think reduces my risks of this happening. So I'll list what happened to my Mother. She goes out once a month with her women friends for lunch. Well...
  15. Both of you make sure to get copies of the actual test page from the lab. If you don't do this, you could easily be told you don't have Celiac, even if you have a weak positive result. If I didn't get my tests pages I would still be eating gluten today as I would have followed two docs suggestions that I do not have Celiac and therefore didn't need a biopsy...
  16. [ Thanks and I will see if they offer the fruit plate as they would only offer me the diabetic or vegetarian meal and gategourmet.com (supplies all of Delta's food now) was kind enough to ignore both my e-mails regarding what those meals have in them.
  17. Wow - you are so lucky to have such a competent doctor. And he's right about the diet being the ultimate and definitive tests, regardless of the blood test results since the current blood test for Celiac misses between 10-20% of actively sick patients. Good luck getting better. Each week brings something new to me that is a positive response to the diet and...
  18. Yes Patti - I am glad it gives her something to do. She's the absolute queen of worrying so if she has nothing to worry about she's pretty unhappy. Living gluten free now she should be set for life with worry. Thanks again.
  19. Thanks guys! I just buy mixes and add eggs and oil and whalah I'm done. As usual Mother likes to complicate things. Fine if she used to bake from scratch but in fact, pre dx she rarely did.....I told her to get the 123 GFP pan bar mix and make apple spice bars. Those things take 10 minutes to mix and are addictive they're so good.
  20. My Mother is trying to make her own gluten-free flour for a dessert at a party tomorrow. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between tap. starch and tap. flour? She apparently got the wrong thing but before buying something else, wants to make sure they are not the same thing. I'm in the middle of doing taxes so I can't search for this answer right...
  21. cassidy makes a very good point. I waited a month before going out to eat. I eat out maybe six times a month now including dining out once a week with hubby and a couple of client lunches. I probably ate out twice as much before my dx. The only thing I really had to give up in terms of eating out was that we'd get either pizza or chinese take out once a week...
  22. jaimi - welcome and I agree with everything that was posted thus far. For me, eating out and travel are both huge parts of my life so I had no choice but to learn how to do each as safely as possible. I have every dining out guide I could find I do not leave home without the Triumph dining cards. Also, as many times I must dine wtih clients where no gluten...
  23. When I cleaned out my pantry after dx, my particular Martha White cornbread mix had wheat listed very clearly on the label. I had three different corn bread mixes (including Jiffy brand) all which listed wheat...what is wrong with these manufacturers....why must they add wheat to every freakin' thing?! With regards to Jim Dandy, even though the package...
  24. Quaker told me flat our they have cc issues regarding gluten and they may be safe but for me, I'm not taking chances. Quaker said not only should I not eat their oat products, but their corn meal, cornbread mix or any of their grits. So I am following their advice. I assume they will eventually catch up with Jim Dandy on labeling and put the disclaimer that...
  25. If you are in the South, you should be able to get Dixie Lily grits and corn meal. They do not process oats or wheat so according to them, they should not be cross comtaminated with gluten. I finally found McCann's steel cut oats which are certified to be gluten free. Has anyone tried them and if so, did you feel okay after eating? They now offer travel...
