  1. Kim- welcome to the board! I have to say that this board has been completely vital to my adjustment to this new lifestyle- in just about every way. For labeling tips, recipe ideas, or just general support throughout the process, this board is an excellent resource. The people who post here are extremely knowledgable and caring and i am sure you will not...
  2. same w/ me- when i was a kid i was always sick, i assumed it was lactose intolerance (which is funny b/c i can now drink a gallon of milk and feel fine) but never thought anything of it. Then it got worse when i went to college but i attributed it to drinking too much went to the GI but he recommended more fiber which didnt help at all. finally about...
  3. It definitely depends on the amount of gluten i have-- and i think on other things as well (like how high my immune system is at the time, how much alcohol i drink that week- always makes it worse). If it's cross contam, i generally get a little sick then feel better, but not perfect for the next 24 hours. If im full-out glutened, it can take a while- sometimes...
  4. dani- thats terrible! just when you were starting to feel great... but let me tell you, any time i eat at a salad bar of any kind, i get sick. i know i dont put anything w/ gluten in my salads, and i always get oil & vinegar or bring my own dressing and i still get sick- not as sick as if i eat gluten, but the cross-contam gets me every time... I think...
  5. im so sorry- thats terrible! i was just telling someone yesterday how fortunate i feel that my friends and family have taken this so seriously... between making little presents for me that i can eat (cookies, etc), calling me every time they hear something about gluten or celiac and looking for restaurants to go to that i can eat at, they have been overwhelmingly...
  6. sweet potatoes natural peanut butter chocolate- reeses, snickers, m&ms, etc. starbucks broccoli (i know, im weird but this is my fav food) rice pudding (sooooooo yum) apples, pears (with peanut butter of course) cheese!
  7. Today was a little atypical b/c i had a law school final this morning, but... Breakfast: Envirokidz cereal bar, starbucks americano w/ soy milk (usually van's waffles for breakfast) Lunch: pear w/ peanut butter, turkey roll up (turkey as the wrap w/ cheese & honey dijon dressing), apple cider Dinner: i dont know yet- probably tinkyada pasta and...
  8. Riceguy, i totally agree about the fiber. As soon as i read your post i realized thats exactly what my problem is. When i say i was a carb addict in my past life (ha, i mean before going gluten-free), i was really a wheataholic. i ate whole wheat EVERYTHING- bread, bagels, pretzels, muffins, pretty much everything possible. i always ate a very high fiber...
  9. These sound really good- does anyone know any specific stores that carry them? I couldnt find them at my local health food store, and id love to try them before ordering online...
  10. anytime guys!... i actually owe the thank you to my mom who excitedly called me this AM to tell me about it...I love how excited other people i know get lately when they see things about gluten or celiacs in the news!!!
  11. I am, but for me i think its more that my brain and body need to adjust to the change, considering iwas a carb ADDICT before going gluten-free. Im pretty sure its similar to when a few of my friends tried atkins and south beach and said they were always hungry-- its more just a huge dietary change that your body needs to adjust to. I will say i am hungriest...
  12. since going gluten-free, i def have an increased appetite, i am always hungry, even after i eat a big meal...the only things that really seem to fill me up are things like nuts (i dont know, say, 2000 calories worth of almonds ) or tortilla chips or something very filling like that - and yes, ill usually have to eat half the bag before im sufficiently full...
  13. First the article on Happyhappyhappy a few weeks ago, and now this- NYtimes is def doing their part to get the word out, at least on what kind of baked goods we can eat! For Wheat Watchers, a Chance to Indulge By CATHERINE SAINT LOUIS DURING the holidays, a woman cannot live on poached pears alone - even if she is allergic to wheat. It is not...
  14. thats it for me too, actually (though i will admit there are a lot of foods i miss on occasion). I hate having to be the annoying one in a restaurant (esp in groups) and i hate feeling like i dont even want to eat out b/c of taking the risk... but most of all, being in law school AND working makes it really hard to plan in advance or go food shopping ahead...
  15. i second the vote for pamelas cookies- i love the espresso choc chunk flavor and the choc chip shortbread!
  16. i really like nut thins- they are made by blue diamond and they come in a few flavors. they are kinda like rice crackers but a little more substance and are great w/ cheese
  17. has anyone tried any of their breads that have fiber in them- like the brown sandwich bread or multigrain rice bread (or any others) i am looking for a bread or muffin that is edible and has some fiber in it, and most of the gluten-free breads i have seen have < 1 gram! also, if anyone knows any stores in nyc that sells their stuff, do share! (trying to...
  18. Ok rachel, you are scaring me.. these were actually going to be my top 5! (except i was going to say Nut Thins instead of Amys frozen dinners)..first the blue tin cookie comment on the other thread and now u predict my 5 fav gluten-free foods?! i guess ill come up w/ 5 more just for fun- this is a great topic! 1. sweet potatoes 2. starbucks ...
  19. I have always been an entenmanns girl myself. In fact, to say i was raised on entenmanns would be an understatement- my dad has consistently eaten an entenmann's chocolate donut every morning for breakfast and the choc chip creme filled cake for dessert EVERY night for as long as i can remember, and now everytime i go visit i get a little sad that i cant...
  20. So funny you should mention those- i was in Staples yesterday and they were selling them by the cash register, and i actually stopped for a moment and thought about how i used to eat them all the time growing up- i havent seen them in YEARS!!!!!!! Well, i guess NOW i miss them!
  21. Bridget- thanks so much-- i love that you post these dont you hate responses like the one from clearasil? Just give us an answer! starbucks has the same policy of giving you a number to call...why cant they just answer the question, even if they include a CYA statement at the end saying it is only accurate as of the date posted?!
  22. totally understand! somehow commercials have a greater effect on me now than they ever did...like ill see a commercial for some kind of cereal and have some intense desire for some of the cereal, despite the fact that i NEVER ate cereal before going gluten-free! To me it feels like its b/c i cant have it so i want it, even if its not something i generally...
  23. I am extremely hungry after i am glutened, and the experience is very much like what you described. But i certainly havent lost weight from getting sick, b/c i find that i do replenish (possibly over-replenish!) after getting glutened.
  24. I agree with this, I think that higher-end restaurants generally tend to be very accomodating. I live in NYC and have certainly found this to be true. Also, there are some cuisines that i would think are safer- perhaps a steakhouse or a nice sushi restaurant. And most seafood restaurants will grill fish and prepare dishes w/o sauce upon request. In NY, there...
  25. Brynn-- I have had the no rye-rye english muffins and thought they were really good.. but those are the only ones ive tried.. a friend of mine RAVES about them too
