  1. A super cheap option is dum dums. Gluten and nut free.
  2. Holy cow - I read this first thing this morning and then picked up two loaves around 10a. One loaf is almost gone! My son (the latent celiac) ate TWO sandwiches for lunch and begged for more bread. My husband who really, really dislikes gluten-free bread devoured some. Good call!
  3. You're right, both sad and unfair. Everybody at my oldest's school is awesome about understanding bathroom needs for all the kids. I explained that if she ever feels like she has a bathroom emergency to just walk out of the room (a difficult concept for an 8 y/o) and I will handle the Principal/Teacher. Celiac or not, you're allowed the decency and...
  4. I think the difference is if your doctor will give a clear diagnosis. If you can get it written that your daughter has celiac then that's all you need for school - with or without an endoscopy. If the doctor won't DX without scoping first then I'd go with that. FWIW, I have three kids. The youngest (18 months at the time) had the highest bloodwork...
  5. Our first gluten-free Christmas we hung out at home and had our own thing, then went to visit with family for about 2 hours, then back home to eat. No need to spend ten hours with the same people, no hating that I couldn't let my then-baby out of my sight for fear of her eating something, none of it. It was, by far, the best Christmas we've ever had. ...
  6. I have a gluten-free house (other than beer and shaving cream - which only matters because I have young kids). And our friends know only to bring approved items into our house. In the beginning it was a hassle as we sorted out appropriate brands. Now they will show up with unopened certified products. Only once did someone bring something without asking...
  7. Does school provide all lunches for all students? I seriously cannot fathom their assumption that all homemade lunches fall within this policy. It is physically not possible for this to work if parents are sending in outside food for kids. That being said, I'd fight it, but I'd also fall under the "ask for forgiveness and not permission" route and just...
  8. Is this policy for the classroom or the school? My daughter has been in a nut-free CLASSROOM before (meaning everything that enters the room must be commercially prepared in a nut-free facility - this would be for student snacks, holiday and birthday parties, etc), but the LUNCHROOM was a free-for-all with the nut-free kids all sitting at the same tables...
  9. Are you making a gluten-free kitchen or a gluten-free area for her in the kitchen? That changes everything. Some will have an area of their kitchen for the gluten-free items and they buy those items in a specific color so nobody uses them on gluten containing food. For example, she needs a safe toaster, collander, cutting board, cooking spoons and cookware...
  10. Actually, most of us will share our 504 plans so we don't have to reinvent the wheel. Here's the one I have for my toddler (it is similar, but not the same, as the one for my older kid). Key points: - only food from home and either NOT touched by any adult or served first - her eating space needs to be clean before she sits - she should eat at the...
  11. I fly with my kids enough and have NEVER had to throw away food at security. Ever. The only time I've ever had them even think twice was when I was transporting about 60 ounces of breast milk. They ran it through the x-ray machine and called it a day. Many take food in carry-ons and buy drinks after security.
  12. Well, I have a dedicated gluten-free restaurant within 10 minutes of my house. The food is good and the prices aren't crazy high (still high, though). I'm in a fairly large metro area so I'd probably drive 20 minutes. Tops.
  13. Lordy, the last time I flew with the kids we had several lay-overs and a full day's travel. I had an entire backpack full of Go Picnics and snacks and desserts and... We just bought drinks once we got through TSA. Much lighter by the end of the trip.
  14. I so remember that first month of finding out both my girls had celiac and my son was going to get it someday. My feelings were so conflicted - sadness for my oldest (7.5 at the time) and joy for my youngest (1.5 at the time). Still, a year out, my husband and I go through conversations about how "it's just so weird that she won't be drinking cheap beer...
  15. Nope. No way would I have my kid in the room during the mixing of the paper mache - flour everywhere (!!!). I spoke with our art teacher about her supplies and found out that she isn't using gluten items for 3rd grade. We did come up with a plan that she would have my kid wear latex gloves if she does something "on the fly" in the room with an item that...
  16. Thanks so much. It's so difficult to figure out when I need to worry and when I need to let things slide.
  17. My husband and I were talking today about our typical Fall activities with the kids - apple picking with the hayride, pumpkin picking with the hayride, climbing the hay bale castle to go through the corn maze, etc. you get the drift. This is going to be our first Fall dealing with celiac. Is hay a concern? No idea if it's wheat, but I'm in the Midwest...
  18. So, do you guys ask for permission to bring in food when places state no outside food? I feel like I need to ask since my kids generally can't be accommodated at museums, children's events, etc, but it's a pain to find the right person to get permission. Maybe I just ask for forgiveness over permission...?? Eta: I'm talking about asking someone before...
  19. Well, I wasn't loving gluten-free shampoo and conditioner so I went back to my good stuff, BUT I use Suave Professionals (in the gold bottles) for my girls. They're safe and seem to work really well. We tried a few other types of Suave, but the gold bottles are the only ones that are decent on their hair. My youngest has that fine, wispy, little girl hair...
  20. I have read on here that it's important for high school aged kids to have a working 504 for them to take to college with them. Otherwise there are concerns about a required meal plan with not enough safe foods to eat. If she's at a public school they are required to provide a 504 with appropriate accommodations.
  21. Glad you had a successful eating adventure! We really are lucky to have so many options. I'm happy to hear that Hacienda worked for you. Their name comes up on our local celiac listserve regularly - and it's almost about glutenings!
  22. My youngest (2.5) is in the Kids Morning Out program at our school district's early childhood center. Because it's through a federally-funded school district they put together a 504 plan for her - as required by law. She's the only kid in her class on a 504 (in fact, the first one in this KMO program on one) so I worked with the Director, Nurse, Teacher...
  23. Can you get into her Ped sooner? If it's celiac or a gluten issue that's a long time of not feeling well when testing doesn't take too long. Especially since she still has to be on a gluten containing diet until all testing is complete.
  24. YES! All first degree relatives should be tested while on a gluten containing diet. It's a simple blood test Without that "guideline" my older daughter wouldn't have been DX.
  25. We usually bring a Go Picnic and buy a drink from the facility. Nobody bats an eye.
