  1. I have an gluten-free house (sans beer and shaving cream) and car. We are this way because my 2 y/o is DX and keeping crumbs away from her would be a nightmare. Anyway, my middle kid is allowed gluten. He doesn't get it at home or via snack and still in preschool so his two gluten containing options are 1. birthday party treats and 2. meals out with daddy...
  2. My youngest was DX at 18 months. Problems started at 12 months and it took a while to figure out what the problem was. She also was DX by blood alone - her blood work was crazy high so they didn't do a biopsy (our Ped GI only does them when there is a true need on really young kids). Anyway, since we didn't scope her we pulled more blood and it was just...
  3. Cara made a good point about keeping extra Go Packs in case of an emergency. Our school keeps three there in case of a forgotten lunch, but if school had a huge ice storm they would be screwed - food isn't prepared in our cafeteria so NONE of the kids could eat. Our school is in the middle of a neighborhood, though, so I can rattle off a handful of moms...
  4. That looks like a normal toddler belly to me. My youngest had the celiac belly starting at 12 months - huge belly and twig limbs. Her face was also really gaunt (she looked like she was starving, despite the huge belly). Once she started gluten-free her belly went down, her extremities formed and her face filled out. Night and day.
  5. Our first meeting ended up being a snow day. Then our second meeting was a snow day (we had a crazy, crazy level of snow this year). Then the nurse had her cancer come back and ended up taking the rest of the school year off. So I called and got the substitute nurse - who had no idea what to do so she called her boss and that stream-lined the process....
  6. Great start. When does school start? (I ask because ours starts the second week of August - uber early) Our whole plan from first request to active 504 was about four months.
  7. I'd like to get some for when we travel. For example, we went to the Ritz brunch and it would have been awesome to be able to toast something for my kid. I would only need them once every six months so I don't need quantity, but disposable seems so much more appealing. I saw on Ebay/UK that they sell the disposable ones, but nobody will ship to the...
  8. Standard American Diet. Not a "special" diet (gluten-free, paleo, low fat). It's basically used to say about people that eat healthy enough, but still have junk food, fast food, etc. so, yes, I love fruit, but I also rarely turn down ice cream! Now that I have to cook all meals and snacks we eat a heck of a lot healthier. That being said, I still miss...
  9. I thought they recently changed 'normal' gestation to 40-42 weeks. Maybe I heard that wrong. I highly suspect that I have celiac and that's the genetic link for my kids (I tested in that weird "elevated, but not high" category). Anyway, I had a SAD during all pregnancies so it won't help, but I have a 40w1d, 41w3d, 39w5d. That last week was a b%$@# with...
  10. Do you have a preferred brand? I'm curious about the reusable aspect. Keeping them around with gluten on the outside freaks me out. How do you deal with that aspect?
  11. Another reason for 504 plans... When your kid has a sub the plan is put in the sub file. There is no way for it to be overlooked.
  12. My older kids still needed gluten after I had deep cleaned the house for the youngest kid (who was totally still eating off the floor!). I bought them Oreos and had them eat them outside after the youngest went to bed. I was seriously the best. mom. ever. !! Shoot, those individual bags of cheeze-its or goldfish or any other junk food that they won't get...
  13. I have a working 504 for my oldest (3rd grade) and my youngest (pre-school that runs through our school district) - both are for celiac as the girls have no learning issues. Number one thing - find out who your 504 liaison at your school and request a meeting *in writing/email* RIGHT NOW! It will take time to pull together their team and you can get...
  14. YES, get a pediatric gastro. Celiac is bigger than the average Ped/family doctor can handle.
  15. I'll leave the question re: bloodwork to some others here that are much more well-versed in the topic. Have you had allergy testing done? My oldest's little bestie has really bad eczema that flairs with dairy intake. Once she went dairy free (really, she's dairy light b/c they only eliminate drinking cow's milk, yogurt and cheese) it went away. I don...
  16. How did it come out? I'm seriously sitting here tearing up thinking of friends doing this for my kids someday... You're a wonderful friend.
  17. Thank you so much - we *loved* Fox's BBQ! We are living in the midwest so we eat way too much BBQ, but I'd never had smoked corned beef. So good! We also tried Legal Seafood (eaten there before going gluten-free) and it was painful. Their frier was down so they were pan frying. Not a problem until they tried to pan fry my food twice - burning it both...
  18. Like Stephanie, my kids will often ask about the next meal while we are currently eating. They're a little food obsessed! I'm not sure if this is your only child, but that whole toddler/pre-school crowd *loves* carbs. I've seen kids turn into little piranhas around Goldfish!
  19. Is the preschool through your school district? If so, you can get a 504 Plan for her. My youngest is starting Kids Morning Out through our district and we put together her plan before school got out so she starts Day One being safe. Luckily, the woman that puts these together does the whole district, so she brought older daughter's plan and we built...
  20. My older daughter (going into 3rd grade) packs her own lunch a lot - or tosses me ideas when I'm packing. She likes: * Crunchmaster crackers and sunbutter (sometimes with jelly). She makes them *at school* Lunchables-style * sunbutter and something to use for dipping - Snyder's pretzels, carrots, etc * fresh fruit (or, if we have them at home, fruit...
  21. Yep, hours in a Whole Foods and my cart was still practically empty! It sucked. If you're seeing a nutritionist then you have time to transition. Start with meals you already make gluten-free (or a simply change will make them safe) - ie, steak and baked potatoes and you just need a new seasoning. Bacon and eggs and you just need a new brand of bacon...
  22. If you're willing to visit chains - the West County PF Changs has done us right several times, as has Original Pancake House (both locations). There's also a crepe place in Clayton that's pretty good. They use buckwheat so they aren't light and fluffy, but good. I can get the name if you'd like. And Fuzzy's in Manchester is sooo yummy. It's really...
  23. I'm in STL. Our pinacle of gluten-free is New Day Gluten Free (Open Original Shared Link) - they have a tiny little sitting area, but good food. Also have freezers and prepared foods/treats to buy. It's in Ellisville/West County. I haven't tried it, but people rave about their pizza when it's fresh (not frozen). The Corner Pub and Grill (Open...
  24. Against the Grain is the only pizza that my kids will touch. We used to eat "fancy" pizzas pre-DX, though. So they weren't raised on delivery pizzas with pepperoni.
  25. I don't know - are you a middle aged housewife slowly going insane by the army of kids you created? The minions are driving me mad!
