  1. She literally stopped growing at 12 months and dropped off the charts. Bloody murder screaming all night long. She turned into a horrible sleeper (we went the route of a Ped Sleep Therapist to get over the hump - looking back it is so obvious that she was in pain). She was DX with Failure To Thrive at 15 months and I was given until her 18 month check...
  2. I think what gets me is that the oldest was in that middle ground so we could have gone either way. I erred on the side of caution and now I feel guilty. My youngest was off the charts (100+, with 100 being the highest number) in two separate blood draws so there was no wiggle room - it was clear.
  3. I was tested back when all this started and was also in that weird middle ground. I was 100% gluten-free for that first year while I was still nursing. Had a couple of gluten containing meals in the past few months - and every time it causes huge GI distress. Knowing how it makes me feel I wouldn't do a challenge, but I really don't need to since I was...
  4. I agree about the "free bread" that they bring to the table. We never get it since we have 2/5 of us with celiac. We've only been to one place that had gluten-free rolls brought to us all warm and delicious - Maggiano's. My kids *really* miss stuff like that. We tend to eat family style while out and about. The whole table gets gluten-free food and...
  5. Negative biopsy. I have to go find her results, but the titer was <4. She was 7, I think. That particular test was 5-10 = "probable" and 10+ was "positive." No, we didn't run the genetic tests on any of us. My husband and I both have un-DX GI issues. My test came back at 7, too. I have an appointment with the GI in mid-January...
  6. She's of the age that discussing these things is like "OH, MOM!!", but, yes, D or very soft stools. She's a lot like me in that the first trip to the loo gets things moving and the second finishes the job. And, just like me, it's so obvious that the food is causing the trip to the bathroom. Ugh, I didn't want to consider eliminating more from her diet...
  7. This is about my 8 y/o (also referred to as oldest). In Fall 2012 she complained all the time about stomach aches. She would have to get up from the meal to relieve herself - every time, sometimes multiple times. She went from being really tall (90%) to more average (50%). The GI ran a panel and celiac came back negative. We were told that the "pain...
  8. My then 5 yo had constant stomach aches and a negative celiac panel. Fast forward to 7.5 and a sibling DX (and the same stomach pains) and she received her diagnosis. ETA: Her original bloodwork came back negative, but the later panel was in that weird "could be, couldn't be" number range. We added the bloodwork to the lack of weight gain in over...
  9. ^^^ When I last figured out my loaf it was about $2.75 a loaf with the Namaste all-purpose flour. I tend to keep a loaf of the Aldi stuff in the freezer just in case we need a quick piece and I don't have a loaf ready. Come to think of it, I should probably just freeze a pre-cut loaf that I make.
  10. We use the red bag (turkey) and no issues. We also get her treats from Costco - dried chicken that we break apart in smaller pieces. She's also 100% gluten-free and thriving (lab, too!).
  11. I'm the mother of an 8 y/o with celiac and I can tell you that it's exhausting being the one to always feed her. And, for her, it's sad to always be the one with the "special" food - remember that little kids desperately want to fit in. The gesture of having something for her is huge. For example, we went to a friend's Halloween party not too long ago...
  12. A lot of us have the school keep shelf stable lunches for the kids, just in case. These are one of the few options available. Yes, I can make a better, tastier lunch with fresh ingredients, but having a lunch able can be a nice change of pace.
  13. Many of you may already know this, but I thought some of the newer folks might appreciate the head's up. There are several boxes of Go Picnics that are gluten-free and Target sells a wide variety of them. If you're walking through the store and you notice they're on sale (in my area the regular price is $3.99/box) grab two boxes. Then go buy them ...
  14. And this is why I would NEVER allow the school to feed my kid. That's great that the person in charge knows all about CC, but what about the day that she's sick, or takes a week vacation, or has a baby and is out for a couple of months. Who pays? The kid that is sick at school. Ugh. Some days I dread making lunch because we are running behind. And...
  15. I didn't ask my daughter's school to provide a gluten-free lunch in her 504 Plan because I don't want them to worry about it. Frankly, to me, it's not worth the stress of worrying that it's safe for her when I can send in a nutritious meal that won't make her sick. I even went as far as closing her lunch account (which isn't an easy task). With a quality...
  16. And this is totally OT, but I've found a go-to gluten-free meal for groups. We entertain a group of 5-6 families with lots and lots of kids each month. I used to try new things and kept spinning my wheels and making great meals with pretty significant cost. And then I thought of it - what we eat with our Girl Scouts...walking tacos! A couple of pounds...
  17. When my youngest was DX at 18 months I immediately called the oldest's school nurse to find out if anybody in the school (490 kids) was gluten-free. Nobody was, but there was a former student with celiac (that was actually her secondary DX to diabetes - so only the school knew and celiac wasn't written into her 504). She got us in contact and then offered...
  18. No. All this started when my youngest's blood work came back at an alarming high rate for a toddler. Because she was a baby the GI didn't like putting her under for a biopsy. So I asked that blood be drawn again - just to be sure. Then we tested the older two. They both had the same number (in between 5-10 - so that weird, "could go either way" spot...
  19. OP - I'm going to respectfully request that you speak to your GI first. A lot of parents here have a lot of experience, but we all come from different areas. Our Pediatric GI DX my 1.5 y/o on blood alone (she didn't feel that biopsies were worthwhile for young children) and DX my 7.5 y/o with a negative biopsy. They're all different - some are more stringent...
  20. We ate them and the two with celiac in the family did fine.
  21. I will ditto Nicole. * Test the older child before you stop gluten in her diet. And test you (and dad) too! * My whole journey started when my 1.5 y/o tested positive and we 100% made our house and my car gluten-free. Turns out the older sister also had it - and the middle boy is a "latent celiac" so he will get it too. Gluten took over my kids...
  22. Wow, this is just mind blowing that they keep the blood. What awesome information to keep on hand!
  23. I forgot to mention this earlier - does your physician offer a month of free samples? Maybe you can get some Armour that way and try it out. My endo won't prescribe it. He's a big wig with the academy and only does Synthroid and Levoxyl. Period. No generics, nothing on the "unusual" end of the line. Totally old school.
  24. Wow, I wouldn't call the process "easy." As a new-ish mother with cancer I had to wean my daughter (13 months, at the time), purposefully ingest poison in a room full of radioactive signs, move my family out of my house and be in isolation for ten days. In those ten days my husband came by toward the end and one friend stopped in with lunch (wasn't allowed...
  25. I pretty much donated my entire kitchen to my girl scout troop. It's all in their big box for camping - still getting love, but from little girls that want to learn to cook using decent products! Just a thought if you know of a GS troop.
