  1. You could order rice paper online?
  2. The dietary challenge *IS* a valid diagnostic test as well, and you seem to have a big-ol' POSITIVE on that one.
  3. I'll join the "why is she cooking two meals" camp, but from the perspective that you guys need to sit down and talk about it. No, scratch that - sitting down and talking about it makes it sounds like it's a one off conversation; it should be a normal course of events topic of conversation. You talk about how the kids are doing in school, you talk about...
  4. Sensodyne may have changed something, as - three years ago - they gave me a much more affirmative answer on the gluten. I agree that their current reply sounds like a CYA. (I don't have an email or anything, I called them.)
  5. Lots of thai food is naturally gluten free - pad thai, curries, etc. I don't have recipes off hand, but googling will find you lots of them.
  6. It sounds like they aren't fully cooked. I know you followed the directions, but I've never had microwaving actually work, except for quick-cook oatmeal packets, and never with the instructions as written. I'd suggest at least trying to cook them on the stove top until they're cooked, and never mind the instructions - that means add a pinch of salt, as...
  7. for the "I have a million things going through my head" it *really* helps to start 'shutting down' at least half an hour, if not more, before bed. do *not* go running through the house picking things up, do not go checking your email or taking care of mail - at most, read a book. also, keeping a pad of paper next to your bed so you can write it down (don...
  8. It may well have been that they hadn't had time to bake anything.
  9. If it's from acquaintances and people I don't know *that* well, I say thank you, and take the gift in the spirit intended. If it's from people who know I can't have something, or in your situation, I would say "thank you. we will find a way to put this to good use, but I should have let you know that we're keeping the kitchen gluten free in the future....
  10. Any idea what the problem is? Mattresses are *hugely* personal. It took my husband and I a full day (and a half dozen stores) to find a mattress we liked. It was $1500 bucks (full memory foam mattress, not a TempurPedic), but you're going to spend at *least* one-third of your life on it, and a *very important* one-third of your life on it, so it's not...
  11. I also haven't found any prescription med that had gluten (as opposed to a CYA statement), but you can ask the pharmacist for the name of the generic manufacturer (he/she will have that readily available).
  12. toothpaste is one of the hardones to know - it hides in natural flavors! sensodyne and one other sensitive tooth toothepaste are the only two I know of that are a problem. crest and colgate are all fine.
  13. Tell them. Tell them that you feel really bad for asking them not to eat your food, but that you don't have enough to share, because the stuff's stupidly expensive, and you feel crappy when you go hungry because they've eaten your food. It sucks, I've had to do it before, but you do have to keep yourself fed!
  14. I'm not stretch mark expert (though I have them from going from 0 to puberty in a summer... ), but aren't they essentially a type of scar? The plastic surgeon who stitched up my face when I got smacked by a tree doing volunteer work recommended using Mederma to reduce scarring... You might ask your doc if that would help for stretch marks as well?
  15. Eh, we all read things differently. What doesn't confuse one, will confuse another. Heck, what doesn't confuse me one day, will confuse me the next, even if I wrote it. No worries.
  16. it takes me somewhere between 15 minutes and 2 hours. it takes others here more than a day.
  17. If something naturally doesn't contain wheat - like hummus - I'm not going to look for one that says gluten free, merely make sure that it doesn't say it does have wheat (or other gluten containing ingredient). I don't look for specifically labeled gluten free cornstarch, or table salt, because these things *are* gluten free. You don't generally go around...
  18. Never, ever, EVER, rely on a list of this sort. They will be, at some point, wrong. Even if it's just by a day. Rely upon ingredient listings (this one clearly labels wheat) and rely upon calls to the company.
  19. throwing up won't do a lot of good, might change the dose a bit if it's *right* after, and is solid food, but in general, just supportive measures until the symptoms pass.
  20. I think the concern she's expressing is that she feels there is a categoric statement of fact that it is "NECESSARY" to use gluten-free products to be safe, despite the fact that there are no studies that show this, and that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin. There's some validity in that, but I will argue that this isn't a black and white...
  21. you can use the rice protein (or hemp protein, which has more fat) in a smoothie made with coconut milk (which also has more fat) and fruit, for a very calorie and nutrient dense breakfast. avocados along with almost anything is going to be a good thing - mix it with tuna and eat with corn tortillas for a snack, for instance. nuts if you can have them...
  22. at the least, for hand lotion, how do you not ever get it in your mouth? if you wash your hands after you use it, then what was the point of using it, as you've just washed it off? if you don't wash it off, then do you never ever lick that bit of food that splattered onto your finger off, never wipe off the corner of your mouth with a finger, never ever...
  23. Heh, all of this is a good point - it greatly depends on your lasagna recipe! My 45 minute cook time veggie lasagna without cheese really can't support no-boil noodles.
  24. Confront? No. Bring her up to speed and let her know what's going on? Yes. Tone is everything, and you just want her to know, not harass her. That'll help her take you seriously on this one, and maybe others more seriously in the future as well. And if she doesn't believe you... no skin off your back, you still know what you need to do.
  25. de boles makes a no-boil noodle, and it's passable (even to serve to non-celiacs ), but it's not as good as doing a pre-cook with tinkyada (which doesn't appear to have a no-boil option). I'd have some of both on hand, and use the de boles when you're more pressed for time (or lazier! ), and the tinkyada when you're feeling pickier.
