ARCHIVED Gluten-free Electrolyte Tablets Or Drinks
tarnalberry replied to Mbelle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Emergen-C is fine, except the raspberry flavor (and one other berry flavor? I stick to the citrus ones because I always forget which berry flavor is the issue...) -
ARCHIVED Back From The Allergist
tarnalberry replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yep, I'd disagree with environmental allergies (including dust mites) not being able to cause digestive upset. Both the post nasal drip, and the general effects of the excess histamine systemically, can bother my stomach - it's minor, but still annoying. -
ARCHIVED Hard To Control Addictions
tarnalberry replied to x1x-Stargirl-x1x's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
While I don't know from personal experience what you mean, I certainly believe you. I would ask two questions: First, are you on any medications that can cause addicting behaviors (like Mirapex can, for instance)? Second, have you had this sort of thing happen in any other area of your life, anything at all similar, before? If you think either question... -
ARCHIVED Having A Tough Time...
tarnalberry replied to carecare's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Even those who don't find the diet hard find the transition to be a challenge. It's such a huge change, in a place where you'd never think to make such a huge change. And it's so insidious, creeping into all kinds of things - like vacations! But you can adapt around all of those things, including vacations. It takes time to answers to all of those questions... -
the idea behind people with dairy intolerance being able to have yogurt is that yogurt has less lactose, but if you're already giving him lactaid (which digests the lactose) is wouldn't make any difference. if he still has trouble with it, while taking lactaid, he has problems with casein (the milk protein), not lactose (the milk sugar). yogurt still has...

ARCHIVED Elimination Diet Gone Wrong?
tarnalberry replied to misdiagnosed6yrs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Bet all the advice and stuff you're reading sounds totally confusing? Well, it is! When you're trying to do something like this. I'd go back to eating whatever you ate that was closest to being reasonable on your symptoms and then do some planning, figuring out what very few foods you are very confident in not bothering you, and what are unlikely to bother... -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet Gone Wrong?
tarnalberry replied to misdiagnosed6yrs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There isn't really a short cut, and I've never seen a good "prepared" plan. The best thing to do is research about what foods are bigger problems and smaller problems for people, and eliminate those. I think I took three weeks to plan my elimination diet (and it was cut short because it was too difficult because it was so strict), and I'm glad I did. ... -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet Gone Wrong?
tarnalberry replied to misdiagnosed6yrs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Honestly, I don't understand your elimination diet. Half of the items on your list are problematic for more than just a "rare few" people (pineapple, almonds - an allergen!, strawberries, bananas, peppers, just at the least). Not to mention the fact that if you increased your intake of fresh fruit and veggies much, you're likely to get more gas as it is... -
ARCHIVED My Kids Hate Gluten Free Food
tarnalberry replied to truthsearcher's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
btw, the food for life rice tortillas need to be heated in the microwave to be edible. but yeah, I don't do bread products for the most part, aside from a muffin recipe of my own and a couple quick breads. -
ARCHIVED South Orange County, Ca Restaurants
tarnalberry replied to Cynbd's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
When I lived in HB, I had no problem with the PF Changs in Irvine, or the Outback in Long Beach (not OC, I know). I also ate at Open Original Shared Link in Fountain Valley successfully (vegan Vietnamese food), and the Buca Di Beppo in Irvine (if you can have dairy, there's lots of options). -
ARCHIVED Weight Gain After Diagnosis
tarnalberry replied to Judybrooks's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
it's not uncommon to gain weight - you can absorb nutrients now. as for losing it, it's a matter of taking in less than you burn. that matter isn't so easy, though, as how much you burn is highly individualized (and varies with so many things). it may take some time to find out what sort of fuel your body runs best on, and how it does best with burning... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Get Super Dizzy When Working Out?
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Sports and Fitness
The blood pressure cuff will only tell you about the blood pressure, not heart beat irregularities. It's worth working with your doctor on that one. In the meantime, however, walking will burn nearly as many calories as running (though it will take longer... ). -
ARCHIVED Getting Tired Of Forgetting To Take Lactaid - Think I Might Have To Go Off Dairy
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Well, it can be tricky, but if the lactaid makes all the symptoms go away, then it's dealing with the lactose and you're dealing with the casein, and you know that you're lactose intolerance, and can eat anything low in lactose (or with lactaid). Since lactose is a milk sugar, dairy items with the least sugar and the most fat and protein are going to... -
ARCHIVED Almond Butter
tarnalberry replied to missy'smom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Trader Joe's is a good place to get a decent deal on it. (You can get it from Whole Foods for less than $20, though it's still like $8 or $9. You can get the 'fresh' (refrigerated) stuff there for $20, if you really want to spend that much.) You can also make your own by using a food processor (like a CusineArt) on raw almonds, with a touch of salt if... -
ARCHIVED Getting Tired Of Forgetting To Take Lactaid - Think I Might Have To Go Off Dairy
tarnalberry replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I haven't found that there are any good substitutions for dairy products. if it's really lactose, however, you should still be able to have some hard cheese and yogurt in your diet - particularly full fat versions, as they have very little lactose in them. Other than that, it's been a matter of adapting around dairy and finding new things. Doable, but... -
Good luck on the progress!

Think of physical therapy not as the inability to do something on your own, but rather the opportunity to learn how to reach *your* specific goals in the healthiest way for *you*. It's such a good personalized learning opportunity, that it's worth giving it a chance. Of course, there's no one who can give us the patience we need for the process... that...

ARCHIVED Crazy Casein Confusion
tarnalberry replied to skikat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Eh... I think the figures on the commonality of food intolerances are wrong. I say that because I think doctors and researchers are relying on markers they already know, rather than accepting there may be markers they don't know and listening to patient responses. I don't think you could give me a battery of tests and empirically determine, without talking... -
ARCHIVED Reversing Osteoporosis Without Fosamax
tarnalberry replied to frec's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
another important part of the equation - particularly for celiacs - is magnesium. your naturopath may have included it, but if not, a 2:1 calcium:magnesium ratio is important for uptake of calcium, and most people have difficulty getting a full supply of magnesium (even with a healthy diet, it can be a challenge), and it's all the harder with the villi damage... -
ARCHIVED Contamination
tarnalberry replied to la2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
like zcat suggested, perhaps you guys can work together on something? I feel much better when my mother-in-law and I cook something together, and serve a totally gluten free meal. she knows to check every ingredient, but mostly knows that she doesn't have this sort of thing ingrained in her head, so it's easier - for both of us - if I help. but still fun... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Know If I've Been Glutened?
tarnalberry replied to Amelia01's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Given the situation you're describing, I'd probably actually try option 1, but realize that it may or may not tell you anything, if you tend to be asymptomatic. If you go that route, make sure you are *scrupulously* gluten free for at least two weeks first and write down how you are feeling and basic notes about your biological functioning, then have a significant... -
ARCHIVED My Dr Thinks Im Crazy?
tarnalberry replied to horsefarmer4's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you were gluten free for two months before blood tests, there's a decent chance you got false negatives out of your test. But more important than any blood test is the test you did yourself - you felt better on a gluten free diet, so why not continue doing what makes you feel better? It's clearly healthier for you! -
ARCHIVED Avacados
tarnalberry replied to misdiagnosed6yrs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
On a strict elimination diet, you're not going to get a lot of variety, and that's one thing that can make it really really hard. As for avocados, I love eating them plain. -
ARCHIVED Crazy Casein Confusion
tarnalberry replied to skikat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Lactose intolerance in celiacs may be only temporary, as lactase - the enzyme that digests the milk sugar, lactose - is produced at the tips of the villi in the intestines, which are often damaged in recently diagnosed celiacs. Casein intolerance is different. I've seen very conflicting things on whether or not casein, one of the milk proteins, is suffienciently... -
ARCHIVED Contamination
tarnalberry replied to la2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
let me give you an example of why she may have chosen this route from my experience this holiday: my husband and I stayed with his parents. I love them; they are wonderful people, are about as understanding as you can get for folks who don't have celiac and have never heard of it before, and try to be very accomodating. but I had to cringe as I saw...
